Dulles Community Church - With my beautiful wife Kelly Arthur - Churches Near Me - Aldie, Virginia

First of all, Pastor Brad is a compelling speaker, and I appreciate his charismatic qualities delivering the gospel. However, I found a cliquish quality to this church. I am a married, full-time working mother. That said, I had not-so-much time to volunteer my time (although I did work with the babies/small children (on-and-off) in Sunday school during the five years we attended). I also also felt it important to give monetarily and did so during this time. So indeed my family was visible there, and we (unsuccessfully) sought connections for too many years. (We should have left earlier.) Yes, we were there there consistently during my children's elementary school years. So looking back , I never felt totally accepted and finally realized that I (we) never would be unless we could support Pastor Brad's/DCC's organization with lots of volunteer activity/monetary support. These are the the people who got his (and the elder's) attention and support. This church is great as a seeker church. They give a lot of focus/welcoming to potential members. This is where their out-of-clique attention goes. However, once a person becomes a regular and does not make that inner circle, the experience is (in my opinion) really impersonal. Two experiences come to mind that support the above: -I had had foot surgery and hobbled in to the South Riding Starbucks. At a nearby table (where I had entered) sat Brad and one of his very visible/inner circle male members. My perception (but don't know for sure) is this man seemed to have the money that funded some of Brad's projects or the church in general. Even though Brad saw me (my effort to walk couldn't be missed), he said nothing. I suppose I expected more from a COMMUNITY church. (Wouldn't this have been a great opportunity to see what was going on physically with me (as a person who attends his church?). Not a word. -After we stopped attending, never a contact from the church. Again we felt all but invisible. On another note, Pastor Justin seemed to have more approachability/maturity about him. And please know that we left this church five years ago. With more experience behind them now, I hope things are better there for people like us. We are now very happily churched where the power is spread among lots more individuals. Seems to make for more balance. Just felt the need to tell my story. read more

Up for a few weeks to visit family and tried this tiny church. Bottom line up front, save your tithe and go elsewhere. This church has zero programs for children or teens, the band is sadly horrible, and the worst part was the pastor talked about how we should "die for DCC". That last one got me because I'm looking around at the maybe 50 attendees thinking, "who in here would actually be willing to die for this guy?" I kept thinking he would tie it into the saints and dying for the cause of the Bible but no- it came across loud and clear we should die for THIS church and THIS pastor... That did not sit well with me because I couldn't help but think it was more about the pastor's bank account than for God. The audience seemed dead and it was weird overall. My spouse and I tried Gateway the following week and it was literally 1000x better. Never going back to DCC. read more

I am not a fan of church at all. I grew up attending a judgmental, politically bent, Southern Baptist Church equipped with lots of fire and brimstone nonsense. It seemed the tenants of Christ (don't judge, so that you won't be judged, love your neighbor as yourself, don't be hypocritical, etc.) weren't actually being represented on the pulpit or in the attitudes of the parishioners. Even in my young age, this didn't feel right to me at all. Exclusive and negative 'us versus them' philosophies had poisoned the name of Jesus for me. I never could believe in this God. If this was what Christianity was all about, count me OUT. Per this unpleasant experience, when I turned 17, I quickly left this place. Moving forward, after being away from Church (and Christ) for 25 years, I saw a street sign for DCC and on a whim I thought, why not? I was looking forward to reconfirming that Church still sucks and I'd go away for another 25 years. At DCC I found something quite different though. There was an immediate sincerity coming from Pastor Brad on that high school auditorium stage. His humility and lack of a pushy agenda appealed to me. At DCC I found it refreshing to learn that I could love and follow Jesus without judging and condemning others. I was honestly shocked to see that there were people truly loved Jesus and who sincerely aspired to live like him. Anyhow, enough of my jabbering. If you're looking to try out a different church, give it a go. read more
