I basically grew up coming here during day trips with my family. Bellaire, or even this particular plaza, has the best Chinese food and dessert you can find in the entire state of Texas. This is easily my favorite spot in Chinatown. Honestly, if you can't find something to eat or do here, you aren't looking. It's a massive two-story complex and the variety is just insane--you have everything from high-end ramen and spicy Sichuan spots to bubble tea shops on basically every corner. It's not just food, either. You can spend hours wandering through the different stores, checking out the boutiques, or hitting up the grocery store. We are lucky to have Dun Huang Plaza 敦煌廣場 in Houston Chinatown. It sets the center stage for all activities from sunrise to late night (like 2 am). It has over 2 dozen of dessert restaurants, over 3 dozen of dine-in restaurants, and several dozens of other businesses. You can stay here all weekend long to do your shopping, eating and much more. I have spent so much time in this Plaza that I think I actually live here. On the night that Hurricane Harvey hit H-town I was actually in this Plaza. So to say it's my home away from home would be an understatement. The reason is that a lot of my favorite places are here, especially for dessert and bubble tea. But also for food. Such as Hunan Bistro - perhaps my fave spot in Houston - where I get the Cumin Lamb (orgasmic), Tofu w/Seafood, and Spicy Diced Chicken. Hunan might be the best Chinese food I've ever had in my life. There's also Strings Noodle - wonderful. With locations of Sharetea, Gong Cha, and Kung Fu Tea as well as the wonderful gelato shops Frozen Cafe and Gelato Cup, the best ribbon ice anywhere at Nu Cafe, a location of the yummy Six Ping Bakery, and so, so much more, this plaza is second to none. It's also second to nuns, because the convent across the street consider themselves more important than Dun Huang Plaza (cough yeah right cough). That's a little un-convent-ional of them isn't it. I would definitely say this is the place to hang out when in Houston. The only problem - and it is a big problem - is that parking here is almost impossible, because so many great places are packed into such a modest plaza. Packt like sardines in a crushd tin box. It's just so insanely busy and packed especially on weekends, but really every afternoon evening and night of the week. Sometimes it gets to the point where it's an absolute zoo and all human decency goes out the window. Parking can be as bad as Manhattan. But the food is better. Anyway I'm Dun Huanging out with you. To the naysayers of Houston Chinatown who are may complain there are too many Vietnamese influence: Come to Dun Huang Plaza (. It feels about as sprawled as LA and as fobby as Flushing, Queens and yet it's still under construction. This is undeniably one fo the most Chinese centric areas of the city, all in one convenient stack of a shopping plaza. There is plenty of parking throughout the area and even if it appears that every lot is full, one can go into grocery store parking lot where it just goes up a bunch of levels. The plaza is stocked with all sorts of Asian businesses, mainly restaurants, dessert spots, entertainment, massage spots, KTVs, and a few SE Asian establishments as well. I'm usually here for various reasons. It could be a bubble tea run, it could be to eat or get my foot rubbed, some light souvenir shopping for friends / family, people watching, or to see people park badly. And there is a ton of the latter. Watch out for the weekends, the traffic gets pretty messy. read more

I love this plaza! It has some of my favorite places to eat and shop in the city. When we are stumped for dinner, we often head straight over to Dun Huang, knowing we'll find something to our liking. Some of the stand outs are: *East Wall Chinese - some of the friendliest waitstaff and best food around. *Banana Leaf - It isn't my favorite, but everyone I know loves the place. It's Malaysian cuisine. *Gelato Cup - It's another gelato place that serves interesting flavors. Why is this place special? The nature videos they show are amazing. You could sit in there for hours eating gelato and getting lost in a beautiful ocean scene or something from the Planet Earth series. *fit Japanese Store - it's a Japanese dollar store that carries more nick knacks than you need, but it's a ton of fun to go through! *Dun Huang Market - this grocery store is awesome. We went in looking for one thing and came out with lots of snacks. I don't know what the background of most of it is, but I can confirm that they have Japanese products and snacks. They are super cheap as well. Places I haven't been yet but are on my radar: *Kubo's - I see it every time and I just haven't made it in yet. *Shabu House - One of my favorite meals in Tokyo the last time I was there was Shabu style. I keep meaning to try this place out! Growing up in Houston but being 1/2 Japanese, I never really got in touch with the Asian side of my family. When I first came to this plaza, I was like, oh this place makes me nervous because I don't know the social rules that others do. This plaza has a parking garage so you can some shade. This shopping center is the Yelp List of great places to eat and shop! I started to notice a trend that whenever I ate dinner with my parents that we would end up at this one outdoor mall. Feeling like dumplings/Japanese Hot Pot/Dim Sum/shopping for the kiddoes-- we'd end up, once again, at the very same shopping center. I have to give my folks and their Chinese friends full credit for introducing me to this address. Located just within the Beltway 8 on Bellaire Boulevard, Dun Huang Plaza is one of the newer malls along the Bellaire Chinatown Corridor. Still under construction over the past year, the shopping center has been steadily filling in with a host of stores from restaurants to insurance to groceries to jewelry to karaoke. It started off with some high caliber anchor restaurants and shops that are some of my favorites: Village Cafe Banana Leaf Shabu House Dun Huang Supermarket Star Ice & Teriyaki and FIT And these are just the ones I've tried. You could make a solid half day of wandering around and eating: Hit one of a dozen restaurants for lunch or dinner. Take a break from food at with some shopping at FIT (Japanese 'Dollar' Store) or the small, but immaculate Dun Huang Supermarket. Then grab something sweet on shaved ice at the Star Ice (there are at least three other stores offering desserts). Most of my favorite places are kind of "L"ed off Bellaire, but there are a lot of new storefronts off the main boulevard. Dun Huang is double deckered with a second floor of shops many of which I have yet to even walk by. It gets busy on the weekends, but there's ample parking in two separate parking garages. My Tip: Check the "Chinatown, Sharpstown" with the 9889 Bellaire address listing on Yelp, and you'll find plenty of 4 star+ reviews for some of your old favorites and some new ones. read more

Has it really been that long since I last reviewed this place? So much has changed except for the fact that this place is poppin' more than ever! I still love the various boba/tapioca places that you can find here and all the different restaurants. There is just too much to choose that it gets hard to actually pick a place. The great thing about this plaza is the continuous change throughout the years. Every place is in competition with each other so only the best continues to stay in business. Many places have opened up and closed and another establishment would take its place immediately; so we're always left with new and exciting shops and places to eat or drink. Parking has become a hazard zone though with so many people and not enough spots to park, but you'll always find something new here that's for sure. read more

Dun Huang is still the best Asian shipping center in Houston. However, the plaza is starting to show its age. Considering how well the square is doing, the owners or management should really keep up with the maintenance: Fix the non-working escalator or just remove the whole thing and make it regular stairs. Having an escalator that doesn't move makes your customers feel like this shopping center is neglected and is a huge turn off. Make sure all the lights are working. Even though I have never felt this way, I have heard a few friends, mostly female, who told me they feel it's dangerous to go upstairs in Dun Huang at night because some places are so dark. How much could light bulbs possibly cost when you're raking in tens, if not hundreds of thousands a month in rent. It's especially important to have lights working on the rooftop of the parking structures. It's incredibly dark up there without lights and very dangerous, not just from potential criminals but people could trip and sue. Make sure the elevators work. The shopping center is getting busier and I applaud the designer to have the foresight to build parking structures. However, it's very inconvenient to park on the top floor without a working elevator. It may be fine for me but what about handicapped people, old people who can't walk too much stairs, parents with strollers, people holding multiple bags of heavy grocery... etc. Keep the stairwells clean. I like the fact that there are so many stairwells around because I frequently take my young sons to climb the stairs and explore after we eat. However, sometimes it smells like garbage or worse piss. I sincerely hope Dun Huang keeps up with the maintenance or someone else build a new, hot Asian shopping center that will be good for the first five years. read more

This is where you need to be for all things Asian in Houston. Three karaoke spots? Check. Two flavored ice dessert spots stacked upon another dessert spot next to it? Check doubled. The Fit will have me spend a small fortune in $2 increments. Yes, I need it all! All that walking may give you some issues. Well, get a foot massage at one of the two massage places. Wait, or even sign up to get your three times a week for an hour on with physical therapy. You can easily confuse the Asian writing and no domestic cars in the expansive parking lot with an actual Asian speaking country. Don't. You're just on Bellaire. I love the Dun Huang Plaza. I come here very often whether it's to eat good food, hang out at one of the many bubble tea shops, or to get a $20 foot massage. Sure, the parking situation is a disaster, but you can usually find a parking spot in one of the two parking garages. There are some other cool little stores in this plaza where you can buy gifts, get baked goods, or even shop at a Japanese household products store called "Fit" which is like an Asian-style dollar store. At nighttime, you will also find a few bars, a place to play pool, and even sing karaoke. Of all the Asian plazas along Bellaire, this one is my favorite. It has the best food, best shopping, and best market. Ever since this plaza opened, I rarely find myself anywhere else while looking for noodles, dumplings, or groceries. With the addition of the new karaoke bars (which I never go to), I can imagine how busy this place will be in the evenings. I have not seen an Asian shopping center like this anywhere in the USA. I should not even call it a shopping center because about 90% of the center are leased to cafes, restaurants and massage spas. The center is an Asian food and body relaxation mecca. Just about every type of Asian foods are represented here: Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese, Chinese of every styles, Taiwanese, and Malaysian. After eating at any of the eateries, you can walk two doors down to the left or right, or walk up-stair, or across the parking lot and get yourself a foot message or body massage or combination of both for about $40 per hour. I need to come back and do this food/massage thing. It will be like a one day vacation in one's home town. read more

OMG, where has this place been all my life? We recently discovered this lovely gem and are so glad we did. Why? HOARDS and hoards of wonderful places to eat and explore. Heck, I'd give the place 4 stars on the delicious smells wafting through the parking lot. Really. Hub and I got out of the truck and he looks at me and says "This smells like Asia. I always wanted to take you there, but this smells almost as good." He's traveled Asia in the Navy and has fond memories of his visits and we are now building fond memories together here at Dun Huang. Ok, enough about our relationship, sorry.
