Did not appreciate the gentleman interrogating people at 2am coming back from our wedding as to our room numbers and last names

We arrived here early afternoon on a Friday for a birthday party and boy did we party over two nights. The hotel was pretty crammed, particularly on the Saturday night, with several birthdays, at least one baby shower party and a wedding. Our room was comfortable, overlooking a garden. The staff we met were kind to us and very helpful throughout our stay and we are a demanding bunch; service was friendly and prompt particularly with the birthday cake delivered two nights running after our main meals. They lit candles, they joined in singing happy birthday (like every other guest around us on both nights) and they even took photos for us on our phones, served up slices of birthday cake and kept the cake refrigerated to keep it good. I can't name every staff member, but if the hotel could bottle the guy who sang in the bar Saturday night, who had the whole place singing, and Julianna the cheery waitress they'd make a fortune from their respective talents. On our first night nine of us dined in the restaurant and we all enjoyed our food & drinks. I stayed vegetarian for evening meals for no good reason that I can think of, and my starter of goat cheese fritters (3) with poached pear & leaves was really superb as was the brown bread and I think the other bread was an onion bread. I had a ravioli main which was ok but I found the ravioli too thick and the filling too thin for my liking. It would be a much better meal if the ratio was reversed with the pumpkin filling properly seasoned and generous with some salt and fresh sage in the filling that would help too. On night two the restaurant was booked out so we all had the bar food and all of the meals were superb. I had a linguine main that was really tasty with delicious Tiger beer on draught - haven't seen that beer on draught for a long time. The breakfast food was very good too and Julianna kept us well - served with tea, coffee, food and precious laughter each morning. I had some minor niggles during my stay. I raised them with the manager and was satisfied with how he courteously handled my pickiness. Spa is fantastic. A lovely place to unwind. Then had afternoon tea with prosecco followed by a couple of cocktails. Food was ok. Service was a little slow but all in all a v nice experience. read more

7Nice modern hotel. Beautiful spacious rooms. Plenty of TV stations in the room including a few basic movie channels like Film4. Service in the bar needs improvement. Our meal could have been hotter but it was very tasty. I asked for salt and vinegar and server went to find some but sadly they never returned. Later I asked a different server for a drink and again they didn't return. Maybe I caught them on a bad night. Over-all we found all staff friendly read more

My second time in the Dunboyne castle hotel. A lovely place to stay, comfortable, modern & friendly. The only drawback with the room was there was no eater left in the room. It's a small point, but I think if you're paying that for a room, the least they could do is leave some water in the room. That's the only reason this isn't a five star review. read more

I wish I could go back... This place spoiled me and now I wish I was staying here my entire trip to this lovely country. Service: amazing. We flew in and landed early, got to the hotel at 10, had some breakfast (which was delicious, buffet style), and they checked us in early. They normally don't check in anyone that early so it was wonderful. Room: we checked into our room and it was perfectly sized: not too big, not too small. The bed wasn't too comfortable but it worked just fine. The bathroom was lovely, and they had provided me with extra toiletries as I had requested. A nice welcome message was placed on my television and private wifi for my room. After napping from jet lag, reception came to visit with a chocolate plate and hand written note. Every morning we woke up to a beautiful view on our deck. We had trees blocking our view but I know that's not for everyone. Food: fantastic! I do wish they offered traditional Irish dinners but that's just my personal preference. I had the mushroom risotto: delicious! My boyfriend had pizza, the pizza had different cheeses on it, not the typical American mozzarella-only style. The breakfast is buffet--continental and Irish. Bars and spa: they have 3 different bar areas 2 of which were closed when we finally had the energy to get out of our room. Bartenders were nice, and poured our Guinness just right. We hadn't had the chance to dine in anywhere or try the spa, we only stayed one night. Overall a wonderful experience, and lovely way to start our stay in Ireland. read more

Spontaneous lunch to escape noise of the car festival with my new baby. A good choice! Asked the waiter what he recommended and I went with his suggestion of the steak sandwich on a ciabatta with a side of fries. Steak was delicious without any fatty wiggly bits. I did have to ask them to cook it slightly more as I ordered medium rare and a couple slices were very rare. They quickly brought it back with a new hot side of fries... A nice surprise! Bloody Mary was also good. I asked waiter to make sure it was spicy for me. When he brought it, he waited to make sure it wasn't too hot. Service was excellent, polite and attentive Atmosphere fab.. And comfortable big couch for breastfeeding too Only improvements to take to 5* 1.Have grated horseradish for Bloody Mary and also steak sandwich 2. Fries were the frozen kind. First, it is NOT a castle. Used to be a one but no longer there. The outside and lobby are beautiful. Looks like a high end hotel. Pros: lobby, restaurants on site, spa and free parking. Cons: -ordered room service and it took 1.5 hours to arrive. 2 tables were broken inside the room. -The shower is super uncomfortable- the door was hard to open. -There are tons of doors that you need to go through to get to your room- it is hard to open doors when you have luggage. - bed was uncomfortable We were in the 1st floor which is a basement. We could hear everything! Wind, cars, conversations. Air conditioner was noisy too. read more

Enjoyed a bit of lunch with my other half while on holidays, salmon was absolutely delicious, I've been to this hotel several times,beautiful hotel in a beautiful location. This hotel is perfect for a romantic stay, their SPA is amazing! Especially that Jacuzzi outside! read more

So first let me say that I was only here for a single night at the end of a two week trip, thus I waited to right this review until I was able to have some perspective. I was a typical tourist and really wanted to experience a formal tea and see how it compares to the formal teas I have been too in the US. Boy was I disappointed and even worse I made my hubby join me built it up and then had to admit it just flat out wasn't good. First I made reservations as it was a weekend that was the best part of the process - very responsive, professional and worked with my spotty email. On the day we checked into the hotel and confirmed the tea we received no information on where to go. I asked at the front desk and they directed me to a very crowded lobby lounge with a few tables reserved. Those tables apparently are were you are served tea with a reservation; although you can just walk in and order it if you grab a table. It just felt off - trying to be fancy while other tables are ordering bar food and it was so loud. The food served with the tea was meh at best - no clotted cream no curd none of the things I had expected. So on to dinner that night - again last stop before we left so we decided to stay at the hotel and eat. It was really hard to find a casual spot that was opened, but we managed. Some of the restaurants that were suppose to be open weren't with no explanation. The bar restaurant we ate at was decent nothing special but it filled us up. The funny part was that they had a smoking area right outside with heaters etc, but everyone kept getting locked out. I would have thought after the first few people had to be let in by others someone would have unlocked the doors. The Castle - well I am sure that there was at one time a castle. This however is not although a walk through will show you walls of what was once perhaps the castle. The rooms were comfortable although there seems to be a lot of unused space. The grounds were stunning even in the rain. Overall - I would find a different place for tea and dinner, but for a close drive to the airport and a good nights sleep it suffices. read more

I bought a voucher on citydeal to surprise my better half with a night away and the deal I got was pretty good - A deluxe room for two, with breakfast the following morning and full use of the spa at Dunboyne Castle. First my lovely BF gave out for booking something just 5 mins up the road (apparently it does not count as a weekend away if its just next to your house) but he changed his mind pretty quickly (you cant beat female persuasion ;-) ). The staff at the reception was very friendly and the check in went smoothly. The rooms were surprisingly spacious, very modern with big comfy beds, deliciously soft sheets and a decent size flat screen, the bathroom was huge - with bath tube and shower, wifi was free and ground floor room we were in overlooked the surrounding garden. The room was that nice that it took me some tough love to get the BF out of bed to explore the hotel and especially the Spa area. He's actually still thanking me for dragging him out of bed that evening (the spa & leisure area is open till 8pm). What a hidden treasure this little spa is: nice size swimming pool, brilliant hot outdoors jacuzzi overlooking the castle grounds, 2 steam rooms, a wonderful finnish sauna with lovely cedar wood seats (oval shaped benches made out of thick logs with high, impressive back rests molded to perfection to suit your body shape), a chill out room mimicking a beach, chill out areas & a fruit juice bar supplying visitors with water and fruit juices. We made our rounds multiple times - sauna's, pool, jacuzzi , steam room and back to the sauna, jacuzzi, pool.... =-) After hours of blissful rejuvenation we made our way to the bar where we relaxed for the rest of the night before falling sound asleep in an incredible quiet bedroom hiding under heavenly soft bed sheets. Overall an incredible night away (even if it's just up the road you still feel like you had a weekend away) with the luxury of a full spa and leisure landscape that can even be used on its own (and hell yeah I'll be back). read more

The rooms are nice and comfortable. Good size room. Breakfast is included every day. The breakfast is a buffet and it is OK. The best part of the hotel is the spa. They have a great indoor resting pool, outside jacuzzi, these really cool heated tile chairs. Awesome place to rest for an hour. The staff was extremely nice and always helpful. Not quite Faulty Towers, not quite Cinderella Castle... A group of us decided to forego the traditional Christmas home cook-up and giant clean-up for a fancy slap up Chrimbo meal with all the trimmings in a lovely Irish festive castle. Now I'm the first to admit I had my doubts about giving up Mammy's cooking for a meal out, but I went with it anyway, looking forward to the festive atmosphere of Dunboyne and the luxury of being served Christmas dinner with no clean up! (€95 for four courses, it'd want to be a luxury!) Unfortunately, the reality really didn't quite live up to expectations... Dunboyne Castle itself is a fabulous venue, excellently renovated to very high standards. I do however feel that it is a little over-modernised which is a bit of a shame - it really has lost a lot of it's castle-like charm. The other gripe for me is the fact that many of the various 'chilling' / drinking areas are very corridor-like. I guess I just expected something a little cosier... The staff here are also exceptional - all extremely friendly and accommodating. One server forgot to bring our change back and was extremely apologetic when we queried her, giving us a free drink. The major issue however, stems with management, or lack thereof. In an extremely busy room with lots of large tables being served together, there seemed to be no one overseeing staff and the room. There was no Maitre D to greet or seat us. The main issue, however, was the food. My blue cheese tartlet starter was extremely dry with no blue cheese in site, and no garnish or dressing. I ordered breast of duck for the main which was so under-cooked and rubbery, I couldn't even get my knife through it. Others in my party had the classic turkey and ham which came with shop-bought stuffing and more rubbery brussel sprouts, and over-cooked dry potatoes. Honestly, if I had paid €30 for the entire meal, I would still have thought it mightily below-par, but for the princely sum of €95, I felt mightily peed-off. We stayed for one night having booked the bed breakfast and dinner package. Every aspect was disappointing. Upon arriving at the hotel around 2.45pm we were informed by the receptionist that our room was not yet ready and she couldn't guarantee a time but we were informed that she would call us once the room was ready. Given that check in was 3pm (which is quite late) I found this inconvenient. Following this we had to ask if we could check our luggage and we were not directed to the bar/lounge etc. We sat in the bar while we waited on our room and ordered sandwiches, the food came out but we were not provided with basic knives and forks. I asked twice but they were never provided. At 4.20 my partner went back to the reception to ask about the room, it was ready but we never received a phone call. We were simply handed our key and our bags without an apology or any direction as to where the room was. The room was standard, WiFi did not work, shower temperature gauge was not working the water was scalding. I would expect complimentary water in a 4 star hotel. We were looking forward to using the thermal area, but were informed on iniquity that this would be an additional cost!!! Dinner was a letdown, nearly every item on the package menu had a supplement charge! Service was extremely poor. Dunboyne Castle was the last castle we checked into during our castle tour in Ireland and to be honest, it really doesn't look like a castle at all, maybe it's just the name that it's considered a "castle" but it's just like a regular hotel with old rooms and gloomy hallways. It actually reminds me of the inns i stay at in the U.S. under Choice Hotels. No biggie but i was expecting better when it comes to the ambiance. I ordered room service since we're so tired we couldn't drive anymore, the guy who delivered the food was just ok, makes me feel like he's thinking "ugh, ok i need to get out of this room.." kinna thing. Hubby said the tuna sandwich was great though, plus the cheesecake. The reception area looked fancy though, and the staff who checked us in was helpful and pleasant. We were only there for one night so we really didn't enjoy the services they offer like the sauna and spa. I am still willing to come back if it's part of a tour package but hopefully i see some changes with the hotel decors and lighting. read more

This "castle" hotel was located pretty far from Dublin so beware. While the facilities were fine, nothing was super impressive. The receptionist was nice and friendly but no one assisted us with our bags up the steps or explained the facilities. Our room was clean but quite small. The beds were very firm and not plush or luxurious. The shower and bath were pretty nice but the toilet seat was actually off-kilter. The bars were confusing as two were located downstairs and another on the main floor but I couldn't find any hours posted. The breakfast was tasty and the staff were attentive with tea and coffee. Nothing available made to order (complementary) such as an omelette station, but what was on Buffet was good. When I checked out, I accidentally forgot my (nice) razor. When I called to inquire they told me they would call the following day when someone was in to find out but I didn't hear back from them. Compared to other castle hotels we stayed in, this one wasn't too impressive, but also didn't make me miserable. For the price, meh. read more

A nice castle type hotel, with a modern interior. If you don't want to stay directly in Dublin I would recommend this hotel, it's about a 20 min drive ot the city, or you can walk for 5-10 minutes into the town and hop on a bus that will take you right into Dublin so that you can drink as much as you want without having to worry about driving and still have a quiet place to come back to at the end. I stayed in dunboyne castle hotel because we were at a wedding there during the year and found everything from the food served to the hotel room to be excellent. So we booked in over the October bank holiday weekend and stayed 2 nights . As before the food was excellent and the room couldn't be any better . It was very busy that weekend as it was expected for a holiday weekend but had no problems at all . Will be returning again soon . Worth every penny. read more

Fabulous hotel and spa. So peaceful, staff were so lovely and kind. Very clean room but very warm at night. Only complaint was one women working in the restaurant was not very friendly. Its clean and we had a nice time albeit brief. My husband and i were on our Honeymoon and decided night one we were going to stay here. the problem came after we checked in and went to our room, the first time we went the room key worked. the 2nd time, 3rd time and every time after we had to get the manager to come over. Master key didn't work, they had to unscrew the bottom of the door each time and manually insert a key to pop open the door. (20 min min to get in the room we had paid for) I'm glad we were only stayed one night I felt bad at first for the people at the front desk at first but got a little more upset as each time we left the room we were unable to get back in the room. the first night they stayed outside our hotel room for an additional 35 min trying to fix the door. no room upgrade, just a bunch of apologies and we will NOT be visiting again. cant even comment on the breakfast as we could not get outta there fast enough. read more

We stayed in room 337. When we first checked in the reservation was incorrect but it was quickly and easily fixed. The person that checked us in was perfectly pleasant and the lobby and lounge area were clean, smelled like a normal hotel, and didn't raise any red flags. As soon as we cleared the double doors to get to the elevator the smell hit us. Like bad curry. The halls, and elevators just smelled bad. We continued to our room hoping it would get better. We checked in later in the afternoon after driving most of the day so we were excited to shower and get cleaned up before dinner. When we entered our room there was a different kind of smell. Somewhat like body odor, and somewhat like pond scum. It was faint at first. Then we showered. The heat and steam from the shower amplified the stench. I don't know if there is some underlying mold or mildew issue going on. The bathroom appeared to have been recently redone. Just looking at the surface of things, everything was fine. The only thing appearance wise that was off was the fact that the faceplate to the shower knob wasn't screwed to the wall so if you bumped it, it fell off. We knew we stunk and smelled like this place for two solid days after our stay here. We were excited to get to our next hotel to take showers and finally feel clean again. read more

I had dinner in the Ivy Restaurant with my girlfriend. The menu was good and the price ultra reasonable. What makes it a five star rating for me was the attitude of the staff - they were the best I have ever encountered. Attentive to our needs but not overbearing - just right. read more

A minimum requirement for a hotel is to have a bed and shower. Well the bed was great but what a comedic experience with the shower. It would only be extremely hot or ice cold. When I called the reception I was asked to turn the faucet on in the sink and then the shower! Must have tried it for 15 minutes before I gave up as I couldn't get the timing exactly right. Must be a skill I don't have. read more

Pretty luxurious hotel. Not far from the town and only 20 minutes from Dublin. Doesn't really look like a castle though. and their food is not the greatest. And you have to be 16 to use the pool? What the heck. Other than that, it's a pretty nice place to stay at. read more

The hotel is a bit Las Vegas, but it is lovely and they have all the amenities. Roy was brilliantly helpful and couldn't do enough to make our stay comfortable. We got beautiful directions to a local Indian restaurant and all the extra comforts we asked for. Lovely Staff. Fernando was also wonderful and helpful. I was expecting a lot more from this hotel and was really looking forward to my stay here but sadly my experience wasn't very enjoyable. My husband and i stayed here the October bank holiday weekend for our anniversary. We checked in and headed out for the day to meet some friends for dinner so we didn't get to eat in the restaurant. When we returned later on we were looking forward to some entertainment after all it was a a bank holiday weekend. We were bluntly told there was nothing on. The bar was full so we decided to get a drink and sit in the lobby. The bar women wasn't very friendly and when i asked for a cocktail menu she just threw it on the counter in front of me. The atmosphere was terrible. The lobby was dead with two bouncers just hanging around the front door were i believe there is a nightclub. When there was a few seats available in the bar we moved in. Our table was filthy and covered with dirty napkins,food and drinks as was the other table beside us. We were sitting there a over a half an hour before the bar women came over to clean the table. In the middle she stopped to run out to get the bouncers to escort two guys out of the bar toilets that were dressed up for the fancy dress in the nightclub. We went to bed after this as there was nothing else to do. The next morning at breakfast was like a cattle market and the food was nasty. The scrambled egg was like rubber. My husband said the rashers were like plastic and when i asked for salmon it was full of bones. We also asked for pancakes with maple syrup and a half an hour later we got one shriveled pancake covered in icing sugar probably to disguise the state it was in. Then we went to the spa. While in the pool i noticed a green slimy discoloration all around the surrounding wall. The steam room and other chambers were poorly lit with just the odd spotlight in the ceiling. There was a dive every time someone got out of the Canadian hot tub outside which has a beautiful view of a housing estate. How this place is a four star hotel is beyond me. One night was enough here and won't be returning in the future. read more
