The Big Chair is 30 feet high and represents Chair City, as Thomasville, as it is one of the leading furniture-making towns. This particular chair is made of steel and concrete. The base is made of limestone. The original chair in 1922 was made of pine wood, and it rotted over the years. So it was rebuilt in 1948. Lyndon B Johnson stood on the ten-foot-wide seat back in 1960 during a political campaign. But for visitors, we can't climb or sit in the chair. We need to view it from the ground. When I visited, the tulips were in bloom, so that just added to the experience. The chair is very large but just as detailed as a regular-sized chair. It is just a quick stop, but I left impressed.

I made a return trip to the World's Largest Chest of Drawers in High Point, NC. It was getting some…read morework done during my stop, so it had a fence around it. The best place to park is likely at the lot across the street. The Chest of Drawers is on a one-way street, so you might need to plan which lane to get in if traffic is heavy. High Point is considered the "furniture capital of the world." So the 38 feet high road side attraction is fitting. The piece was originally built in 1926 to welcome people to the area and promote the furniture. The design was different, and the bureau was smaller and had a mirror. It was painted white with floral accents. It wasn't a functioning piece of furniture as the drawers didn't open. Then in 1996, Sid Lenger, a High Point craftsman and designer, transformed the piece. He wanted a proper chest of drawers, so he designed and built one with hefty brass handles. This version also doesn't open, but is meant to look like a more realistic piece of high-end furniture. He also added the two pairs of six-foot-tall socks to acknowledge the hosiery industry. I hope whatever work is being done to the chest of drawers preserves the cherry wood finish's color as intended.

Remodeled in 1996, this is the new structure. Steel framing and stucco, it stands 38 feet high with simulated brass handles. And it even includes two giant socks as a tribute to High Point's hosiery industry There is plenty of parking nearby and if you're shopping for furniture at one of these many nearby showrooms, check it out. Located in the Old Davidson County Courthouse, this museum tells the history of Lexington and…read moreDavidson County with a number of displays of memorabilia and artifacts from its history. This is the South, so they certainly have some information on the Civil War (and the former Memorial that's since been removed) but the original courtroom furniture and jail cell are still here. The ground floor had photos of Lexington through the ages. Interesting to see all of this and learn about this interesting city. The museum is free and donations are appreciated. Perhaps not as grand or as visited as the VIetnam Memorial in Washington DC but if you counted the…read morenumber of people who passed within a half mile of this place, it might be a fair competition. The North Carolina Vietnam Memorial is located in the wooded area between the two rest areas here along I-85 in Thomasville NC. As with others, the memorial lists the 1620 names of those who died fighting in the "Vietnam Conflict" from North Carolina and also lists their counties. It is made from North Carolina brick. It is a short walk from either, or you can drive from the southbound one. What is relatively unique is that the highway is actually crossed over between exits 96 and 102, making each of the exits a right-lane one even though it is between the two highways. I took a walk down the stair to the lovely park and left a few kindness rocks behind to spread love out into the world before walking and hoping to find a few doe, alas there were no deer but there were a few bees in flowers. I walked back up. It's a lovely area, it may not be Huge and with statues but it's a somber and respectful memorial to the dead of the Vietnam conflict.

The building itself is beautiful but was not open for tours at the time I passed through town. The marker reads: "Old Davidson County Courthouse. Completed 1858. Interior was burned 1858, rebuild ca. 1867. Fine example of Classical Revival style." Stop by and tour the building. I'd love to see pictures of the inside!
