I made a return trip to the World's Largest Chest of Drawers in High Point, NC. It was getting some…read morework done during my stop, so it had a fence around it. The best place to park is likely at the lot across the street. The Chest of Drawers is on a one-way street, so you might need to plan which lane to get in if traffic is heavy. High Point is considered the "furniture capital of the world." So the 38 feet high road side attraction is fitting. The piece was originally built in 1926 to welcome people to the area and promote the furniture. The design was different, and the bureau was smaller and had a mirror. It was painted white with floral accents. It wasn't a functioning piece of furniture as the drawers didn't open. Then in 1996, Sid Lenger, a High Point craftsman and designer, transformed the piece. He wanted a proper chest of drawers, so he designed and built one with hefty brass handles. This version also doesn't open, but is meant to look like a more realistic piece of high-end furniture. He also added the two pairs of six-foot-tall socks to acknowledge the hosiery industry. I hope whatever work is being done to the chest of drawers preserves the cherry wood finish's color as intended.

Remodeled in 1996, this is the new structure. Steel framing and stucco, it stands 38 feet high with simulated brass handles. We stopped here for a little walk about on a Sunday morning so we didn't happen upon many people and nothing was open at the time. It was peaceful walk in a pretty area.

This national park site is tucked neatly woven into the green belt of Greensboro. Right off of the…read morecity's Greenway, it's not even out of the question to bike to and from here. In my case, I live close enough to actually walk/run here and back. While there is a paved loop through the entire park which features an audio guide and numbered stops, it's actually a wonderful place to walk. In fact it feels almost European in sentiment as I rarely ever see cars driving through and more often see people walking, running, or biking. The park office and facilities are generally a bit outdated, but very informative about the park and the associated history of the American revolution connected to this place. There's a gift shop and daily staff there to answer any questions you may have. And the park teaches you perhaps the most important point: why the city took on the name of Greensboro. But I'll let you all visit and figure that one out for yourselves.

This is apparently a Revolutionary War site, and one that did not ring any bells for me as a…read morenon-historian. And yet, on a weekday morning, the place was packed. Apparently it is a popular hangout for locals in need of exercise (or with a dog). I got an extensive introduction in the visitor center, and after a brief perusal of indoor exhibits I walked the main loop. It had a variety of memorials and historical placards. The indoor exhibit also had placards, but these were supplemented by some hastily printed and taped on cards saying things like "additional context needed" while in most cases adding very little. Whoever came up with them probably thinks they are very smart, but I found the whole thing bizarre and best ignored. The trails are mostly paved, and offer a nice shaded walk on a hot day. I did not watch the historical documentaries, but they may be worthwhile. There is no entrance fee for the site.

The Lincoln Theatre was opened in 1929 and its history is quite fascinating. My friends live in…read moreMarion and wanted me to see the local offerings. We went into the theater shop midday and they asked the lovely woman running the theater if we could have a tour? She was in the middle of getting ready for that night's Rocky Horror Picture Show, but in true sweet Southern hospitality, cheerfully let us in so we could look around and she could talk to us about the establishment. The theatre was lovingly restored in the 1980s by locals who turned it into a nonprofit. PBS broadcasts its Song of the Mountains show here monthly. The woman we spoke to was working on grants to bring in movies and other performances to the theater. It would be a great venue for all of the above. As I had an early flight home the next day, we didn't come back to see the show, but I truly believe this is a gem to be checked out in Marion.

We had the best time walking through the streets of Old Salem. We opted not to purchase the pass to…read morevisit the exhibits this time. We were looking to just spend the day walking outside and visiting the bakery and shops. If we had the extra time, we would have done the whole tour. We visited the bakery on our walk down. It was pretty busy per usual. We purchased some delicious goodies: cheese stars, raisin bread, cherry strudel and an oatmeal cookie sandwich. The first bag of cheese stars never made it home! We ate those as we walked to the coffee pot and God's Acre. We stopped in several shops and did some window shopping. It was so great to see all the holiday decorations out and the bridge decorated with all those beautiful Moravian stars. This is my favorite time of the year to visit Old Salem. It is simply beautiful and quaint. Definitely stroll through the streets of Old Salem anytime you want a quiet moment. It's worth a trip!

One of my sons was a history major (like I was) and once I asked him what was the most popular…read morehistory class at his college. He told me the demand for one particular class was so high it was only offered by lottery to juniors and seniors. The name of that course was the History of the Vietnam War. I love the powerful symbolism of this monument. The first word inscribed on it is "Vietnam". The center of the letter "V" in Vietnam takes the form of a cut out wedge at the top of a granite slab. It seems as though the slab is in danger of being split in half, just as our country was split in half over the war. The inscription reads: Vietnam Each peaceful dawn in this place we are reminded of these men who died for their country Stephen J. Brennan P.F.C. Ara. Crosby Jr. W.O. Frederick W. Dauten Jr. Maj.
