This little theater is on the Palm Beach State College Campus in Lake Worth, just west of I-95 on 6th Avenue South. The campus is small enough so that you can easily identify the building itself from signage as well as its proximity to 6th Ave South. The theater has a lower and upper level of seating, but I've only sat in the lower level. The theater is very intimate, allowing an up close and personal view of performers; I love this! The theatre has a family series each year but it is poorly promoted. I recently attended a show of a national recording artist. Despite being on this artist's mailing list, I didn't know about the show until a few days ahead of time due to a ticket giveaway. The attendees could barely fill the first few rows. At the show, the Theater rep mentioned the next show in the family series in an extremely brief and uninformative 'announcement.' They didn't even ask us to sign up for the Theatre's mailing list. What a wasted opportunity! Also, apparently even a babe in arms of ANY age must pay for an adult ticket. Yet this info is not listed on the Theater's website; a box office rep on the phone told me she didn't think the baby would be charged, which was incorrect. read more

This evening I was invited by PBS to On the Town in the Palm Beaches 'Set Jetting Screening Event with Frank Lacari. The stadium seating was very comfortable with a lot of legroom. When we walked into the historic theater we passed markers, plaques and photographs detailing the history of this 100+ theater in its 74th season. The Oakley, brothers from Illinois opened a movie and vaudeville theater in Lake Worth. They purchased this 55 ft plot on Lake Ave. In 1924, they spent $150,000, then considered a fortune & the Oakley Theater opened, screening the silent film Welcome Stranger. Four years later the theater was devastated by the 1928 Okeechobee hurricane, "the largest single loss in the city", according to The Palm Beach Post. The roof collapsed with only the stage and some offices surviving the storm. They reopened in 1929 with sound only to get bankrupted by the depression. In the 1950's & 70's it was The Playtoy with pornography, being raided 10+ times. In 1974, the Lake Worth Playhouse Organization purchased the Playtoy, for $60,000. Since the theater was renovated & has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 2005, Hurricane Wilma tore part of the roof, destroyed equipment, flooded dressing rooms & damaged the stage. Repairs were made in time for the 2024 centennial with a Roaring Twenties-style party.

It is around this time that the Mariachi costumes became elaborate taking inspiration from Jalisco charros, Mexican ranchers and cowboys. By the middle of the 20th century, mariachi music had made its way into US culture, first in California, then throughout the southwest, and eventually throughout the nation. Mariachi has now become one of the most recognizable Latin music types. Carrying the Mariachi torch in South Florida is the Mariachi Show Mexicanisimo. This musical group can be hired to perform at your private events including birthdays, weddings, and other celebrations. I was able to watch them perform at a friends milestone birthday celebration. The singers had great harmony and they can sing in both Spanish and English. They offer 30 and 50 minute performances. To my delight, everything has been on point so far. I took some pictures to share. Its a great vibe here and encapsulates the cool, downtown, Lake Worth Beach cast of laid back, creative, interesting characters. If that's your speed, you will definitely be at home here Downstairs is another cool venue, called Rudy's Pub. They are the same owners, and host live music too. Im looking forward to the music to start. Ive only heard great things about this Grateful Dead cover band.

This theater has seen better days. But the price is right! All shows are about $6 for all shows…read moreeveryday. So it makes going out to a movie quite reasonable. There's ample parking in the free lot out front. Most folks make their reservations online before coming to the theater. You also choose your seat assignment at that time, too. I used fandango. As you enter, there are two machines on the right side where you can enter your confirmation numbers. The machine then prints out your tickets. We only saw one staff member. She was working the snack bar. I assume you can also buy tickets on site from her as well. We were seeing a matinee and there were only a few other folks in the theater. The screen is large and the sound system is more than loud enough for anyone. The only negative was that it was freezing cold. Next time, I'll know to bring a sweater.
