She's also black lab and loves swimming (typical) and this dog park has a trail across the Fox River where dogs can just jump in and out during their walk on small sandy beaches to cool off. Our dog had sooo much fun and even made some friends. It's not a fenced in dog park, so only take your dog if you can trust them. There is a busy road across the parking lot. They are allowed to be off leash throughout the entire forest preserve in the area before the bridge. I also love that the paths are natural and it's super foresty and shaded.

Plenty of different trails, the river, LOTS of space and beautiful scenery too. My wife and I walked around for a couple of hours while the dogs ran from one spot to the next. We made the mistake of going right when we left the parking area... Left was a better choice. But the area that is not part of the unleashed dog area is still beautiful. We walked out over the river on the newly constructed bridge and just took in the views. Then walking back we found another path back into the unleashed area which brought us to the river, which my dogs were all about, sprinting directly into the water before we could even catch up, it was a warm day. Overall I love this park, and it is well worth the trip for a nice walk. Highly recommend that anyone with a dog who loves to run, get wet, play with other dogs or just walk with you try this place!

This is the best disc golf course in The Kane. Hands down…read more My 6yr old son and I head over here all year round to play this course. The Wheeler disc course sculpts a greater park that also claims several walking/bike paths, a baseball field, soccer/hockey fields, picnic areas, a playground, a mini golf course and tennis courts. Some of the holes are too hard for him to come close to par, but others are a great fit for his current ability. The course has a great range in difficulty which spans from easy par 3's to challenging par 4's. Legging out the entire course is about a 2 mile venture. The backwoods holes are a real hoot. Can't tell you the number of times I've headed into the tree's or the ravine to find a disc that's hooked too far right or left. Throwing from the top of the hill on hole #11 is a person fav. Just don't be surprised if you have to perform the aforementioned trip on a stray disc. Other holes feature baskets on the other side of a cluster of tree's, some border natural grass/reed areas, while others have very lengthy fairways weaving lines of tree's. Amenities-wise there's a drinking fountain near the parking lot and bathrooms near the playground. If you need anything else, bring it. Most golfers here like to bring their own beverage of choice. In early May the Forest Preserve was crowded on a weekday, people getting out during the Covid19 crisis I imagine. There's a nature center, miles of trails, a historic home museum and a one room schoolhouse. At the height of the coronavirus all of the buildings were closed, but these should definitely be worth a revisit.

The forest preserve here includes a mixture of forest, at least one wildflower meadow, and a lazy…read moreriver. The Prairie Path bicycle trail runs through it. It also contains what the park announces is "Illinois' most important archaeological site," but it is poorly marked and hard to see once you get there. The meadows are lovely in the summer and there are (not very sweet) black raspberries in the forest, but if you're looking for the mounds, I would recommend looking for a guided tour. The Park District does these occasionally and they are $5-$8. Unlike me you might then actually see the mounds; I walked all around the sign saying "here you are" and all I saw was underbrush. If you're going by yourself, look up the directions (the signs aren't much help) and go early in the season before all the plants get tall and leafy. On the bright side, the meadow full of wildflowers was lovely; I saw a couple of monarchs and some dragonflies; and I got in a good mile walk round trip. (If you're on your bike, please note that you'll have to trek the last bit on foot both to obey park regulations and as a practical matter; the path is quite narrow.)
