This is a basic travelers lodge that has seemingly had a complete refurb in the lobby and restaurant areas, but the room we were given did the job, but felt quite tired and old. There really was nothing special about this place, the walls were paper thin and we could hear our neighbours loud and clear all the time we were in the room the same time they were in theirs. Luckily, once sleepy time came, everyone seemed to quiet down. We had dinner here and some prosecco and the dinner was pretty tasty. Everything seemed fresh and cooked well. I went with the fish and chips, a hearty portion that my boyfriend helped me finish eating. He ordered the Balmoral Chicken which was chicken stuffed with haggis, wrapped in bacon. One of his favourite things to cook and eat. He was well chuffed. For dessert, I ordered the sticky toffee pudding which came with ice cream and he ordered the cheese board. Both very tasty. Breakfast the next morning was your bog standard fry up which filled us up and gave us energy for the fun day we had planned after we left the hotel. I wouldn't necessarily come running back here, but for what we paid, it was worth it.

Since I had paid £2 for parking, I did about an hour's worth of hiking, taking in the major spots pertaining to the battle. (What? You don't know about the famous Battle of Killiecrankie in 1689? Well, go look it up on Wikipedia; I don't have time to tell you the whole story.) I suppose that the deciduous, ridge-and-valley terrain simply reminded me too much of back home in Pennsylvania to be interesting. So it wasn't the most breathtaking hiking, but it was a pleasant hour in some historic woods. The visitor centre itself contains a modest exhibit on the battle, but focuses mostly on local ecology. There were many kids around who seemed to be having a great time.

But if you like your Scottish history and all the scuffles between Jacobeans and Redcoats then this is a place you need to see. Allegedly the soldiers leap is where a certain Donald Mcbean jumped 18ft across a water filled gorge to escape King George's men back a few years ago in 1689. I think he was probably notoriously trying to escape his wife's nagging to stay off the ale and fight for his country. So he just ran to the hills the Redcoats got wind he might have hidden his ale in a cave so followed him to get it??? Not sure if the battle today was a success for the folks watching but it certainly was entertaining as well as educating. They had horse charging, pistol, muscat and cannon firing, torture through the ages, and Angus's antics(includes tying a guy to a horse on a long rope and dragging him through a grassy field), Scottish youth theatre, big tent Ceilidh later on. You can also try your hand at Archery, learning about battlefield archeology, buy refreshments, sample local highland burgers(venison/hotdogs), there is even a drinks tent. But since you are in an open field if it's overcast and cloudy remember your brolly. Thanks to the local folks and council for supporting events like the battle but without our attendance there would be no Soldiers of Killiekrankie or visitors centre. This visitor centre doubles not only as a historic establishment but a nature venue with grand views of the River Garry.

We…read morewere in search of a good country pub roast dinner whilst staying near Loch Rannoch, and we were not disappointed! 2 friends are vegetarian and we also had 2 dogs - we called quite a few pubs in Aberfeldy and Weem area and no one seemed to offer a veggie a roast option, however the Ailean Chraggan Hotel did accommodate us making up a fabulous veggie plate which even rivaled the meat option!! Dogs are allowing in the bar but not in the dinning room - staff we really friendly and brought them a bowl of water. The place has a nice warm feel, nicely decorated, central log fire, varied menu and board games to boot! There was only one meat roast option (beef) but this was delicious and reasonably prices for the portion served (£12) As we were leaving I couldn't help but notice a group of locals at the bar tucking into what looked like giant pigs in blankets - looked amazing! If i'm in the area i'd definitely return!

You can either satff in the main hotel which has some fabulous cosy rooms or you can have your own lodge in the grounds, so fab if you have a family. There is o much to do here, it has a great family pool area but also an adults only spa pool complex to ecape the kids. You can do golf, horse riding shooting pretty much anything you fancy. Theres even a Cinema! Good choice of pubs bars and retaurants on site and so many facilities you cannot get bored, all in lovely ground and gardens. I booked on one of those last minute hotel type ites and only paid £45 for a deluxe double room on a last minute basis. If you want to go some where luxurious but with lots to do you cant go wrong here

We've stayed in a few MacDonald hotels now and have a good idea of what to expect…read more The best thing about this hotel (which is rather sprawling as it offers self-catering lodges and apartments in addition to the main hotel) is its location - on the shores of Loch Rannoch surrounded by stunning scenery. Naturally we had one of the very few rooms in the hotel that doesn't have a loch view! However, the room was very spacious with a separate seating area and space to watch television from the sofa. Although overall the hotel is of a good standard there were a few wee snags - the television only receives terrestrial channels (& only 3 of them when we were there), some of the decor is looking rather tired and the gym/pool facilities could also benefit from some attention. The bar is pleasant and all the staff were as helpful as could be.
