The DuPuis Management Area is a natural area located in northwest Palm Beach and southwest Martin county. Native American archaeological sites dating to 500 BC have been found here. Later on the Seminoles tried to hide here during the Seminole Indian War of 1835 but they could not find enough food and were starving. The area became known as "The Hungryland" and many of the Seminoles were captured and sent west to Oklahoma on the trail of tears. The land then became the White Belt Ranch owned by John G. and Susan H. DuPuis Jr., who the management area is named for. The couple raised white belted cattle, sheep, and goats. In later years 6,500 acres of wetland were restored and water flow was reconnected to nearby J.W. Corbett Wildlife Management Area. Today when you visit you can see numerous ponds, wet prairies, cypress domes, pine flatwoods and Everglades marsh. This natural area is a massive 22,000 acres. There are 22 miles of hiking including part of the Ocean to Lake Trail and 40 miles of horseback trails, an equestrian center, campsites and seasonal hunting. There is a nature center with educational displays and a covered Cypress boardwalk. The DuPuis Auto Tour is 7.5 miles to the fishing pier on Shell Lake. The remote location of DuPuis makes it especially good for star gazing. Having arrived late in the day I was only able to hike part of the trail but the little blast of a cold front we got made the weather perfect. The trail was well marked with white paint and it is natural earth. I saw cardinals and a pileated woodpecker during my hike. Alligators, river otters, feral hogs brought to Florida by the Spanish, coyotes, white tailed deer, and bald eagles also make their home here. I didn't realize how large this area is and now I am looking forward to doing some more exploration. It is only a little over an hour from where I live but it feels like a world away.

Annual JW Corbett ultra marathon series 50M, 50K, 18M, running the 50k in Depuis Reserver

Dupuis Management Reserve held the Annual JW Corbett ultra marathon series 50M, 50K, 18M. Running the 50k with Nicole this past Saturday April 23, 2016, this race is a charity race benefitting underprivileged local school children to purchase musical instruments. Additionally, representatives from the Florida Trail Association were present to take donations and / or annual memberships registrations to benefit the park. We were up at 3:30am to drive to the reserve from Miami and arrived at the park at 6am . Plenty of time to check in. This was a small local ultra marathon, where we ran the 50km (31miles) option, which consisted of 2 x 15 mile loops through the park's trail network and 3 of which were on the famous Lake Ocochobee to Ocean trail. The terrain was beautiful. The race took me about 5 hours to complete. The race had aid stations every 3 to 4 miles along the 15 mile loop. The aid stations were stocked with gator aid, water, PBJs, bananas, coconut water, ice, ice bandanas for the heat. As temperatures surged, it's important to keep cool. Folks manning the stations were helpful to refill my water bottle and assist with anything required. I had pulled my right hamstring only 2 days earlier so I had to run easy and not push the pace too hard. I managed to earn four new blisters when the shoes came off. Also managed to place 2nd overall. The post race party consisted of delicious BBQ of jerked chicken, beef brisket and pulled pork while commiserating with finishers. Notable runners were World Record Holder and race director of the Florida Everglades Ultra Series and the Keys 100, Bob Becker, the man who ran Bad Water---the hardest race on earth---out and back in one week (270 mile).

You could drive for 30 minutes and still not see everything! We stopped by on a weekday and the park was pretty and relaxing. Not too many people on the couple of trails we did. The observation tower is closed but they still have a nice boardwalk up to that area that makes for a great walk! It's pretty highly elevated for Florida - kind of impressive in person! Entry is $6 per car, and the lady provided a map and recommended her favorite trail. We checked that trail out as well (the white trail), but the height of the observation tower trail was really the star! We decided to drive around after doing both trails, and we saw their campgrounds. So surprising at how busy this place was! It seemed there was hardly an empty spot! Must be a happening place to camp! We'd definitely return for more adventures, as this is a cool park!

I talked with Nancy several times before our arrival and who was always very friendly. She called me with my site number before we arrived so we could pull directly to our RV spot. There are two restaurants within easy walking distance. The causeway to the beach is one block away. The park is very simple, gravel/sand drives. Florida grass spaces with a concrete pad. No picnic table. very basic. We did not use any of the restrooms/showers. The park is close to a train track but after a day or two we didn't really notice them. We had a space on the road with a view of the Indian River. We loved it and will diffidently return again.

Each site offers a level, grassed pad with a picnic table. Full hookups!!!! Open fires are not allowed on the campsites. They also offer weekly and monthly rates with a deposit for electricity. We are staying here for 4 nights in a 30' class A. Have I mentioned the view?! We didn't have to level AT ALL! Just stabilized. Have I mentioned the view?! Pets are welcome with the usual leash laws. They also offer Wi-Fi but only near the registration office. The Verizon signal on my cell phone is at full bars and AT&T (which we use for TV) is strong too. The campground is located close to town but is very quiet. I haven't heard any cars or trucks at all and we have all the windows open enjoying the wonderful breeze coming off the lake. Did I mention the view?! Btw I'm doing something I never do - I'm writing this review after just arriving. I don't think anything in my review will change except maybe adding some more pictures and mentioning the view :) ***Update to my hasty review- although we did enjoy our camping experience here there are a couple of things to add. First off the campsites are extremely close together. I didn't realize how close until we'd been there a day and I noticed how close the neighbors power poles were to us. I'm so so so happy we didn't get any neighbors during our stay. Second, there is a Paper Mill in the area and boy can you smell it! That wonderful sewage smell! Yuck! But only at night! During the day I didn't notice it at all. So we left the windows open during the day and turned the AC on at night. Problem solved. Finally, the rv/trailer park over the canal is really dumpy and the people that live there are very noisy at night. We clearly heard a party both Friday and Saturday nights and a fight on Friday. So because of all of these things I dropped my review down a star. And I just have to mention that the view is spectacular!
