    We came here upon a recommendation from our tour guide during our excursion to Segovia. We were greeted upon entry by a staff member and were seated immediately. The main staple is the roasted pig and I noticed many people ordering it. It is a young pig that is roasted for hours. Kind of like veal in comparison. It is supposed to be so tender you can cut it with a plate. I am not a pork eater but it seemed very popular. I love the decor in the restaurant. It is decorated with pictures and other symbols of the area where they live. It had a nice traditional feel. The restaurant was pretty full for lunch about 1 or 2 but there was not many people waiting. My Spanish is okay but there were staff members who can speak English. At first we got a Spanish menu and I could understand most of it. Then, a waiter noticed we were not native speakers and offered an English menu. Most of their dishes contain their traditional flavors which include pork. They have other options as well, so I opted for the salmon. Our food took a little longer than expected so we were offered a free appetizer while we waited. A great place to come to experience traditional cuisine.

    Our first time in Segovia and our tour guide recommended this place. Wow what a pick that was. The place has a local charm and plenty of tables with nice cold AC. We got the roast pig for one portion which was really good for two. It was juicy and succulent at the same time. You can taste the crunchiness of the skin along with the tender meat itself. When they brought it out, it retained the hot temperature just the way it should be served. They even made some of it into a bean soup which was included. Wow that is a killer dish. We also got the grilled hake fish which they deboned by table side. Lastly got the large bean soup which is a staple. All the dishes were authentic to the locale and a must try for sure. Easily a 5 stars meal and the service was top notch.

It was intended for those eating at their outside seating but they let me have it to go. The chinillo asado is the best I ever tasted with crunchy skin, fat, and moist pork with every bite. Fortunately, I was able to stumble upon La Bodega del Barbero, who offered a much more affordable option for me. The restaurant was very much a hole-in-the-wall. During lunch hours, it wasn't completely packed with folks, and part of it may be due to it being so tucked away. It is a small restaurant with limited seating for large groups and a bar area, and is away from the bustling streets of Segovia. At 15€, I was able to try out a roasted pork leg with fries, a nice glass of refreshing Tinto de Verano, delicious potato pie, and some toasted bread. The pork took 20 minutes to prepare, and it came out absolutely juicy and delicious. I was taken back by how large the portion size was for the leg- perhaps they were accommodating for my American self. Overall, really enjoyed my lunch here and am glad I was able to drop in for a taste of Segovia.

The Soup (Sopa a La Castellana) was highly recommended and looked good from others who ordered it but given the heavy of the main course we decided against it. We ordered the Suckling Pig and Grilled Turbot. The Suckling Pig wasn't as big of an entree once you get the meat off the bones. It was tasty and would describe it as an elevated Pulled Pork. That said, for me, it was one to try and not sure I would order again. The Turbot was excellent and was enjoyed even if it wasn't a filet. Ponche Segoviano for dessert was also recommended-looked good but no room. Service was okay. Again, they were quite busy so some delays. Overall, looks like the spot in town for Suckling pig/Roast Lamb and a few interesting creations.

Still family-run as of 2025, the restaurant is dripping with history, from its Old World decor and Moorish tiled floors, to the photos and honors hanging on its walls. On our recent visit, we were welcomed by Alberto Cándido, the 92-year-old son of the restaurant's renowned founder, who proudly showed us the medal he was given by King Juan Carlos I, which passed on the title of Mesonero Mayor of Castile after his father's death. We were seated at a window table in the beautiful Álvaro de Luna salon to enjoy delicious entrees of Grilled Sea Bass, Battered Hake in Salsa Verde, Pork Snout with Mushrooms and, of course, the famous Cochinillo Asado. Paired with a delicious house red wine and followed by slices of rich chocolate cake and apple pie, the meal was outstanding, as was the service. It was a privilege to eat in this amazing restaurant and to meet the scion of the family dynasty that maintains the culinary legacy of Mesón de Cándido to this day. A highly recommended experience if you're ever in Segovia -- and well worth the quick train ride if you're visiting Madrid.

    Fixed lunch menu for €10? I'll bite!…read more My mom and I followed the recommendations in Rick Steve's book for a lunch spot, and it took us FOREVER to find a place in Segovia that was open. The map from the tourist's office is not drawn to scale! We finally came across this place and were won over by the fixed lunch menu. For the first course, we could choose between a lentil salad and carbonara spaghetti. For the second course, we could choose between cured ham and stewed peppers or meatballs, both served with a side of fried potato slices (not quite like American french fries). For dessert, we could choose among flan, chocolate cake with cream, cinnamon custard, and rice pudding. For drinks, we could choose a bottle of water of a bottle of wine! All of this for €10, tax included! My mom and I were incredibly grateful that our waitress knew a decent amount of English (I had whipped out my iPhone to Google translate the menu). We both ordered the lentil salad, which was tastier than both of us had expected. My mom ordered the sliced ham and I ordered the meatballs, both of which were saltier (prompting us to drink our fancy glass bottle of water) than expected. The meatballs were tastier than the ham in my opinion, but the stewed green peppers that came with my mom's dish were the highlights of the meal! For dessert, I chose the rice pudding while my mom chose the cinnamon custard. Hers was better than mine since it was not as sweet and the flavor wasn't as overpowering, but I wished I had ordered the flan and she wished she had ordered the chocolate cream cake hahaha!
