Not quite sure if this famous landmark is worth the $$. The Duquesne Incline has been one of the "to do" things in Pittsburgh for forever so I decided to come and see it's hype. It's $2.50/person up and another $2.50/person down. When we went, we had to wait quite awhile to go on the train, will say that it may be because it was a weekend afternoon. It's a little bit confusing on how to pay (I think for now its cash only, exact change) as there is no charging station on top. Remember to get the yellow ticket before you go up to signify that you have paid already. The top has beautiful views of Pittsburgh, sure, but you could have the same experience (and cheaper too) if you drove up instead. There's not really anything on the top, just views, and there's a parking lot so might as well drive up and save the $5 unless you want the experience of going on the train which is a little bit anticlimatic in my opinion. Would not recommend when visiting Pittsburgh. Drive to the top instead. read more

I was in Pittsburgh for a quick trip for a pirates game and this was my number 1 pick to do. The views are amazing!! It's exact change (they do have a machine) and cash only, and affordable. $5 round trip an adult. Kids under 5 free. I am however annoyed at the parking situation, across the street (where it says to park for Duquesne) instead of the posted $3 an hour fare. We had to pay $15 because it was event price parking (for a Steelers game 7 hours later that we weren't attending) totally unfair and there should've been a way to get reimbursed since we were there less than an hour. So fair warning if you go on an event day. Other than that. It's operated by the woman selling the tickets, she was very nice. The upper level one has more staff and a affordable small gift shop. This is the younger of the two existing inclined rail car transport systems operating on the side of Mount Washington (opened 7 years after the Monongahela Incline to its south). The view from the top (Mount Washington) is fantastic where there's a small collection of historical articles, photos and memorabilia. The parking lot at the bottom is $5 for 2 hours paid with quarters or credit/debit card. Be sure to have cash to ride the incline as it doesn't take credit cards and there are no ATM on site. $2.50 will take you on the 100 year old tram each only a few minutes and it's pet friendly. A neat experience to be had in Pittsburgh! When we visited a few weeks ago, my boyfriend insisted we visit the Duquesne Incline as he's been a few times before and really enjoys it. I thought, why not! We parked in the lot at the bottom (as an FYI, the lot is paid at $5 for a few hours). The line was long but fast-moving, and even at the bottom you get great views of the city. When we got to the front of the line, we realized not only was entry cash only, it was *exact change* only as well. The kind woman at the ticket booth let us ride on the honor system as there is an ATM at the top of the incline. A one-way ride is $2.50 an adult, so to ride to the top and back down was $10 for the two of us. The ride itself was a little nerve-wracking, but the view and experience was so unique! At the observation deck up top, you get a full view of the city. It's perfect for photo ops! I don't know that I'd do the Duquesne Incline again, but I have to say, if you're a first-time visitor to the city, it's a unique experience to add to your list. read more

The city does a great job at keeping them up and clean. Before you go there, make sure you have exact change. They don't make change. Or you can use a transit card. It's also better to buy a round trip ticket. In the height of tourist season, you may have to wait a bit to ride. While waiting, you can look at some old pictures from Pittsburgh's Past. It is fun to see how Pittsburgh and it's people have evolved over time. While you go up and down the hill, you can see some amazing views of the city and surrounding areas. It's a great time. At the top, you can get out and take some great pics of the city. In the summer, it gets very hot and the incline is very slow. Sometimes, it can be overwhelming. Ride up an incline slowly, the operating car is gorgeous and once in the station you can see some historic photos, see the gears, smell the grease- it's all good! The views are great! Park in the lot below, we accidentally forgot to pay for parking, but we were fine. We stopped somewhere to get exact change in cash, but I think they offered us change! So perhaps that restricting restriction has been lifted! Sure, you can still get the great views uptop by driving up and parking- but why would you? Very rude attendant. The elderly gentleman kept speaking to us in a sarcastic manner as if we were below him. The couple in front of us didn't have the exact amount but was spoken to in a civil manner. Part of me thinks this man is racist towards Asians. The view is decent but not worth the money honestly. If you're a history nerd you will definitely appreciate the Duquesne Incline. Built in 1877 to originally carry cargo up and down the mountain, it later carried passengers who were tired of going up and down the mountain to reach their residences located in Mt Washington. Going up the 30 degree incline at 5mph, you will see magnificent views of downtown Pittsburgh and the infamous "Triangle" - the point where the 3 rivers meet (Ohio, Allegheny, and Monangahela). The fare to ride the railcar is only $5 roundtrip, but make sure you bring cash and exact change. Debit or credit cards will not be accepted and no change will be given. We made that error when our group of 9 were trying to buy tickets. We had to empty pockets and look in the deep crevices of our purses to come up with exact change, but miraculously we had it! At the top, you will be taken to a little station that probably looked how it used to look back in 1877. Nothing fancy, but there is a little museum that tells you all about the incline and shows pictures of how things were back in the day living in the city of Pittsburgh and the history of the Duquesne Incline. At the top, there is an observation deck where you can take pictures with the beautiful skyline views of the various bridges and rivers that Pittsburgh offers. There are a couple restaurants and bars on the block as well. Its better to go up there on a weekend as the weeknights are pretty dead. There is one restaurant/bar directly on your right that offers stunning window views while you dine and sip the night away. If you're in the Pittsburgh area, this is a must do on your list. read more

Awesome funicular that takes you up to the top of Mt. Washington for some amazing views of Pittsburg. You have to pay $5 to park in the dirt/gravel lot and then walk up the stairs and cross the pedestrian bridge to where you buy the tickets. It's $5 round trip per adult and $2.50 if your age 6-11. 5 and under is free. Make sure you have cash for parking and cash for fare. I believe they said the train leaves ever 2 1/2 minutes and alternates sides each time as there is always 2 trains: 1 going up and 1 going down. At the top make sure you explore the building as there is some rooms and stairs you can explore and see all the gears and mechanics of the funicular. It originally opened in 1877! read more

A fun way to get a scenic view of downtown Pittsburgh. My only qualms are that they are cash only and require exact change. They do have a change machine near where you purchase your tickets, however, it dispenses your change all in coins and quarters. Not ideal. Additionally, the workers are not terribly friendly and quite hypocritical - they mandate you to wear a mask, even if vaccinated, yet the employees were not wearing masks. Hmm ... It's a unique experience, but like everywhere in PGH you have to pay to park, then walk quite a distance to the station. Not for those with mobility issues. Cash only, no restrooms at either end. I would recommend parking at the lower incline location since street parking at the top is limited. Bring cash with you otherwise you will be paying a $4 atm fee. The ride provided good views as does the overlook at the top. Lots of history is shared on the walls of the upper location so spend some time reading and absorbing the information. The staff were so strangely rude? Not outright unwelcoming, but it felt like we were all annoyances. Directions were incredibly unclear at both the top and bottom stations. The guy in the payment booth seemed absrasive, the woman directing traffic in the bottom station was incredibly frazzled and confusing, and the woman at the gift shop took FOREVER talking to people about her personal life instead of ringing people up. You can only pay in cash and only at the bottom of the incline, and you have to de-board the trolley in order to pay. It seems majorly inefficient to force everyone to get off of the trolley, wait in a line to pay, and then wait to re-board the trolley. If they only want to accept payment at the bottom, an employee should instead walk through the train collecting payment and keep guests boarded on the train before going back up. The views were nice and I love that the historical incline cars are still running, but the poor management and employee behavior leave me not wanting to return. read more

It's a quick couple-minute ride up and down the incline, but the views are fantastic and it was great to do at least once. They say you've got to do it when in Pittsburgh. We parked at the bottom and they charge for parking $5 for 2 hours. The charge exact change of $5 for adults round trip and $2.50 for kids. (And like any tourist attraction where you leave your car for awhile take your valuables. I remember when we went to the Arch in St. Louis the cars all got broken into.) We only stayed for one hour. It's great to see how the Steel workers had to travel to get to work. After you get to the top there's a small museum of pictures and articles and of course rewarded by the spectacular view. read more

Such a fun experience! Took my fiancée after she'd been asking me for years to go. Finally had a nice enough day to do it. I've lived here for 6 years and never been up the incline so I was curious to see what it was all about. We parked in the lot across from the incline which we easily found thanks to Google map directions. The lot costs $4 or $5 (if I remember correctly) for 2 hours which is plenty of time. From the lot, you walk up some stairs, cross a walkway and then are at the entrance of the incline. The incline costs $5 CASH ONLY for round trip fare (trip up and down). It is FREE for university students with bus access (I just tapped my Pitt ID like I was getting on a bus). They also accept connect cards. It's super charming because it hasn't changed much since the 1800s. You put your cash in this clear glass container that the attendant smashed down with a wooden rod to make room for more cash which is neat. The trolley itself is a surprisingly speedy ride. I recommend sitting closest to the parking lot side at least on one of your trips. It has the best views of the city. Our pictures were stunning especially on the perfect clear sunny day. At the top of the incline there is a cool self guided tour of the pulley system and some old news articles about the incline's history. I learned a lot! There is a souvenir shop at the top which accepts cards on $10+ purchases. It's also a short walk to the famous "Two Points" statue which we went to as well before heading back down. On the way back down we sat on the side to allow others to catch the better views. Make sure you hang on to your round trip ticket because they will collect them when you get back to the bottom as proof you paid. Overall definitely recommend doing at least once!
