Not only is it beautifully designed with plenty of areas to read and work, but it also offers services such as 3D printing, streaming movie services, and the NC Collection, a fantastic resource for anyone looking into their ancestry. Two things I want to highlight: 1) the seed library (free seeds!) and 2) events. The library (not just this one but all of the libraries) has fantastic events for adults as well as kids. For example, I went to a meeting of the Nicholas Cage movie club, and it was so fun. They also offer lectures on a wide range of interesting topics (the paranormal, ham radios, etc.) as well as practical classes (computer classes for seniors and Spanish classes). I could go on and on-- the library is a fantastic resource in our community that has something for everyone.

What's not to love about Perkins? Poor mobile service in the Link (and zero service for T-mobile…read moreeverywhere, but that's not Duke's fault), but that's it. I love Perkins, and I'm stunned that there are no reviews for it. As a former Duke student who forgot her alumni card at home, I learned what it meant to be a guest of the library. Perkins is public, which means that anyone can walk in during its normal hours WITHOUT a Dukecard. All guests can go to the circulation desk to request an hour of computer access on any of the computers on the first floor with red tape across the top of the monitor. This is only valid once a day, and requires photo ID. (Alums, on the other hand, can use ALL computers with unlimited access ... if they have their IDs. Whoops). The different floors and rooms have varying environments to suit your study needs - the Gothic Reading Room or Carpenter Reading Room if you want an old-school, classic feel, or purple ergonomic reclining chairs and floor-to-ceiling dry-erase boards in the Link for modern and high-tech. The first-fourth floors all have normal large tables to study on and bookshelves around you to remind you that you're in a library. There are private cubicles and desks for dual screen access, and study rooms of varying sizes. Perkins, I miss you tremendously now that I've graduated. Really, you don't know what you have til you're gone :(

There are lots of different areas in the library to fit your…read morestudying mood: - big, sturdy, wide wooden tables on the first floor of Perkins for those who need to see other people studying in order to study - cozy armchairs spread throughout the library for those who want to comfortable read papers or books - a deathly silent, no-food zone closed off with glass doors on one of the upper floors for those who hate when others are munching on crunchy chips - The Perk, a mini cafe connected to the library - the Link, with plenty of interactive study rooms and areas on the ground floor You don't need a student ID to get in, which is both good and bad. The bad is that laptops seem to have a tendency to run away if you leave them alone. The good is that you don't have to mentally hit your head against the wall if you somehow forgot to bring your student ID. Other downsides include: not a 24/7 library, no nearby parking, and it gets very, very crowded around exam weeks. Otherwise, great WiFi with plenty of conveniently situated outlets, plus you can bring in food (just clean up after yourself), and obviously a great place to get work done.

It's awesome and we are so lucky to have something like that available. When I was visiting family in GA, my sister was so jealous. Not only can you make holds, but you can view their entire catalog, link to hoopla and Libby, request inter library loans and much more. This location...I thought I'd mention that there are two parking lots, one on each side of the building. They are not connected to each other though. If you live in Durham County and especially if you pay taxes, you should definitely utilize the library since you're paying for it! :)

The librarians and staff are helpful and friendly if you need anything. I usually request books/items on the DCo Library App, which allows you to request anything within the Durham County Library system and have it shipped to your preferred library for checkout. There are no fees for late returns, which I think makes checking out books stress free and more accessible. I also enjoy that I can walk to the library when the weather is nice!

Our family LOVES this library! We have younger kids and really enjoy the activities they host for…read morekids. The library is full of tall windows that allow natural bright light in. It also has plenty of big tables with chairs, however I would definitely recommend going earlier in the morning on weekends if you want a guaranteed table as they fill up pretty quickly. However they also have lots of couches with side tables that I sometimes use as a desk when tables aren't available (sometimes I prefer that since I am a comfy studier). At the entrance, they have a small coffee shop that I have yet to try. On the sides, they have a few conference/group rooms (which tend to be booked anytime I go) and downstairs, they have additional tables. They also have ample parking near the upper and lower entrances.

One of the rooms that I was in reeked of someone's perfume. Staff is okay. I don't quite understand how the books are arranged because some of the aisles seemed to have several random books that didn't fit the category of the aisle. Limited selection of books as well, but they do have some decent books. Public parking lot has a fair amount of parking. They close early on Wednesdays and Fridays during the weekdays, and open much later than usual on Fridays and Sundays.

So I had to see for myself what was drawing all these people in. William welcomed me when I walked in, asked what I normally read, and let me know there was an upstairs as well, with more books. I did just stay on the first floor this visit, but I was so impressed by their beautifully curated inventory. They carry a wonderful selection of new fiction, poetry, children's books, and used books, along with fascinating sections on art, music, and nonfiction. They even had a discount section with books priced at $3.98 or less, which is incredible! They also have dedicated topic tables that highlight local North Carolina authors and underrepresented voices, which is wonderful to see. I found some board books to donate to the Little Free Library I was at the other day. If you've been reading my reviews for a while now, you know I love history and the architecture of older buildings being reused. It is an inclusive store, so everyone is welcome. It is a community-owned cooperative bookstore. The 1915 building, originally home to Merchants Bank, was built after the 1914 fire in Durham. It is a Neoclassical Revival-style building with massive, majestic Ionic columns that define its street-facing storefront. It later became Hood Industrial Bank and was then used for businesses like Letters. Letters opened back in 2013 at a nearby location and moved into its current space in 2021. I wish I had gone to the second floor to see the stained glass ceiling. So that just means I will need to make another shopping visit. I need to give myself more time so I can find something for me to read next time.
