When you get to my age, even stopping in a place called Strokestown can be a bit disconcerting…read more Strokestown itself is more rundown than up and coming despite it having the second widest street in Ireland at 44.5 metres, being one of the very few planned Irish towns (formally aligned streets and prominent public buildings) and a designated Heritage town. Typical of dodgy politicians mind, who talk the talk but only stick their grubby hands in other peoples' pockets to take care of themselves alone. The cash starved town is home to Strokestown Park House an 18th-century mansion which is home to Iteland's National Famine Museum. We turned into this hotel, named after Percy French an Irish polymath - Irish songwriter, author, poet, entertainer and painter. He was born not very far from the hotel but there's no evidence of any actual connection with it. We stopped for tea and scones. The deal was five star but the fruit scone itself just about three star. It can be made much better using stone cold butter, stone cold full fat milk no margarine or other vegetable oil. Cute cosy hotel. Lots of free parking. Good WiFi and friendly staff. Worth a stop and catch a walk around a neglect town.

My wife was responsible for planning a mid-winter week long holiday in Ireland. On the way to the West Coast after a couple of wet windy days in Dublin we stopped at Newgrange and then hurried to Longford for a late dinner before the VM restaurant closed on Sunday. We were warmly greeted by the owners Beryl and James Karney and shown to our room which was large and decorated with period furniture. The room faced the gardens in the rear of the main house and had a small loft sitting room above the bathroom. We dropped off our luggage and proceeded to our meal at VM. The restaurant is housed in a meticulously restored stone building which at one time had been the stables for the manor house. I will consider the food in another review however it was one of the most delicious meals we had in Ireland. We retired to the room and slept soundly. Upon waking Beryl Karney prepared and served a wonderful compete Irish breakfast. We found we were the only people staying overnight so we had some time to talk about the process and commitment needed to restore and maintain a 400 year old property. It was obvious how committed the Karneys are to make Viewmount a first class destination.

Checked in around 2pm, then hit the spa! Our treatments weren't until 5 but we hit up the pool, saunas and other cool amenities. The hotel is super nice, staff is super duper friendly! Our package includes a 30 minute spa treatment plus 3 course dinner for 150 euro, which was pretty good. My scrub/massage was awesome, felt refreshed! Dinner was delicious! Rooms were very nice and the buffet breakfast the next morning was bomb! If you get a chance, take a walk around the grounds. Overall a great little get a way spot to relax and get pampered!

There is lots of land to roam around and explore including a huge golf course. The rooms are spacious and have lovely bathrooms with a shower and a bath. Free wifi in the rooms, a fridge, hairdryer etc and even robes and slippers! There's an indoor and outdoor pool with loungers with comfy pillows if you want to relax by the pool and read a book. There's also steam rooms of various temperatures, foot spas and nice showers. On a quiet day you can really lap up the peace and serenity, drink unlimited amounts of tea, coffee and juices and just relax. I had a Swedish back and shoulder massage from the Beauty Salon. It was amazing! They even have a hair salon! You really don't need to leave the hotel over your stay as there are plenty of options to eat. The Botanic restaurant or the Cellar Bar (or room service) have got plenty of choice on their menus. It all comes from the same kitchen anyway. I was so impressed with the buffet breakfast. So much to choose from! Probably the biggest buffet breakfast I have ever seen in a hotel. Fried, scrambled and boiled eggs to choose from! The staff are very helpful and friendly too. I couldn't have asked for more. I really enjoyed my stays here (3 times in 2 years) I recommend it highly and I know I'll go back again.
