I'm a member of the Virgin Active just down the road in Streatham but thought that I would try out the Fitness First as it is closer to Streatham Hill station than Virgin and thus a little more convenient for those early morning sessions before work.
It's a huge pro that this Fitness First opens at 0600 which is an hour earlier that the Virgin just down the road. However, I can't really think of any other major advantages over the Virgin Active just down the road.
I signed up for a free trial pass at Fitness First. First of all, Fitness First only give you one complementary towel which is a little stingy, particularly if you're paying in the region of £50 per month for membership! How do they expect you to use only one towel if you're making full use of their facilities? I always use a minimum of two (one for the workout itself/to wrap around myself in the the sauna and one dry one for after my shower). The towels aren't even that clean and just smell of bleach which is rather worrying!
Upon redeeming my trial pass at reception, a member on her way out approached the main desk to complain about the "chaos" in the gym in the morning, including no hot water, no shower gel in the showers and a general mess in the changing rooms. Indeed, there was no hot water which was a shock to the system, albeit quite refreshing. I understand that this had been quite a problem in the gym for the weeks prior. The changing rooms aren't that great and I witnessed broken locker doors and broken shower doors falling off the hinges. The shower itself can only be compared to a hose pipe outlet.
The gym floor itself is decent and has a lot of variety. The machines are good and there is a decent amount of space overall so no one is stepping over each other. I wasn't able to use the sauna/steam room/swimming pool but it looked decent, as did the spin class rooms.
It was nice to be able to check out another gym but Virgin Active still ticks all of the boxes for me - from the customer services, to the cleanliness and the layout that made a lot of sense (cardio on one floor and weights/machines on the upper floor). I think that the additional time it takes to get to work is well worth it, however, I'll be signing up for a free pass at the Fitness First in Brixton to compare. read more
