We drove to the north from Edinburgh and decided to find a place to stay in Newtonmore. All B&Bs from our AA's guide were either booked out or closed. It was a rainy late afternoon, and then we crossed the Balavil Hotel. We didn't plan to stay in hotels, but this one looked like a cute guest house. So we entered. The guy at the reception was uber friendly and really funny. Of course they had a room for us he said, and also one with two single beds. The rate: £35 per person, including breakfast. Awesome! The hotel is quite old, but it totally matches the cute town of Newtonmore. Staying in a fancy new hotel would have been weird. The room was nice and clean, and the beds comfy. There's a bar in the lobby with a local ale on tap and some other scottish beers, and obviously Guinness. They also serve food I believe, we dined out though. After dinner we had a couple of beers and it was really cosy. Breakfast is served in the spacious dining room next to the lobby. It's buffet style, toast and coffee is served by the waitress. The food was okay, nothing very special. The breakfast is probably the hotels weakest part, but it was fine. A big plus: free WiFi for all guests! I would stay again.

A few days before our arrival, they emailed my husband to get a time frame for our arrival - which was appreciated. While we arrived 30 minutes after our stated arrival, we were greeted by Graham with an offer of whiskey, shortbread cookies and apple juice. (This was a family trip.) Our room was spacious, the beds were so comfortable and the breakfast was ample, filing and delicious. Janet said she puts milk and honey in our porridge, which made it so tasty, rich, and filling. They have a vegetarian option for breakfast, which my husband and I enjoyed and my daughter loved her traditional Scottish breakfast. While we booked via Expedia, Graham mentioned in the future for us to contact him directly to get a better rate. We look forward to visiting again in Kingussie, Scotland and staying with Janet and Graham. They are excellent hosts and it made our trip and stay worry free and very enjoyable. This guest house was a discovery I happily share with others making their way through the Scottish Highlands!

This was the best lodging we had during our 3 weeks traveling scotland. Simon and Fiona are really…read moredoing a great job running their B&B. Our room had everything we needed and more. Fresh apples, water, an eco kettle, organic or fair trade tea, coffee and cocoa. The bed was big and comfortable. The bathroom absolutely luxurious, with walk-in shower, mica sink and top notch design. The lounge room had a fireplace, comfortable couch and armchairs and an armada of DVDs and books (Simon is a SciFi-Fan so you might find the collection just a bit biased :-). Drinks including a big variety of whisky are available on request. As a whisky enthusiast Simon has a lot of stories to tell about the "water of life", with some luck you might even find yourself in the middle of a whisky tasting lecture. They also have plenty of advice and suggestions for activities and interesting spots to visit. And their supply of leaflets for these is endless. The breakfast is absolutely delicous. I mean it - I've tried them all. Be it the porridge, the freerange eggs or the poached and smoked haddock. They even offer something like a vegetarian full scottish breakfast (difficult to imagine, huh?). Some of the products they use is home raised, like the eggs (watch the chickens searching the garden for their breakfast during your breakfast) or the fruit compote on the cereals buffet. I could go on endlessly pointing out the little details that made our stay special, like the drying room, the bird watching or the dinner opportunity. But I'll wrap it up: You can't go wrong with booking here.
