I needed a giclee print made of a watercolor I had been working on for a long time. It was of the ER in Doctors Medical Center in San Pablo, where I was an ER nurse for 10 years. I have happy memories of that period in my life. The hospital is now closed, but I have managed to track down my favorite doctor there, and intend to give it to him. Thank you Yelp for helping me find Steven. I only wish I had found him and East Bay Giclée sooner. You see, a coworker had asked me to paint a portrait of 2Pac and Biggie last month. It was the first painting I had done in a long time, and the process of making it brought me so much joy that I shared it on social media. I was soon getting requests for prints. One problem: I had never made prints of my artwork before. Before selling the original painting, I followed the advice of a well-meaning friend to get a high-res scan... at FedEx. The proof at the shop seemed fine, but when I finally got around to opening the image file at home, it was awful. There was a green line across the image (probably from the FedEx scanner), and the paint job looked uneven. My Photoshop skills leave much to be desired, but I did try going that route first. Fail. At that point I had already sold the painting, and my coworker then gifted it to someone. I was so far removed from the original painting that I couldn't get it re-scanned somewhere else. I turned to Yelp to find a local printer who could possibly salvage the dreadful FedEx scan. After finding East Bay Giclée, I contacted Steven with both the scanned image and a photo I took of the original for reference. He opined that the scan wouldn't produce a quality print, but he could work with the photo I took with my iPhone. He sent me a preview of what he came up with, and I decided to move forward with printing. Today, almost a week after my initial contact with Steven, I picked up my prints and I am so happy with how they turned out. The prints look fantastic, but what's most impressive is what Steven was able to do with my iPhone 8 photo. I can't wait to get more artwork printed. I've been looking for a Bay Area independently owned giclée printer that doesn't try to take advantage of local artists by charging ridiculous rates for prints and I found one at East Bay Giclée! Steven is also a talented local artist and works out of his studio. Communication was hecka easy and professional and when it came time to pick up my order, he handled the prints in gloves and made sure I reviewed them before charging the rest of the fee. He also offered to ship next time I ordered from him! I got the smooth hot press cotton paper which was A+ quality! I was so annoyed with my previous print shop because their paper was poster quality and they were not super nice to women in particular. Extremely overpriced. He charged nearly $700 for 8 prints (2 prints of 4 paintings), which included $75/image. When I questioned that price, he was rude and condescending. I thankfully didn't agree to pay the nearly $700 and went to Berkeley Giclee, where the cost for the same project will be around $240 (including $25/image), and the guy who runs Berkeley Giclee is much friendlier. The quality at Berkeley Giclee is just as good if not better than East Bay Giclee, and East Bay Giclee is particularly cost-prohibitive for artists who want to sell prints of their work and obviously hope to make a profit. read more
