Our child spent 3 years at the school, and it started out well but by the end of our time there we…read morewere glad to be done dealing with them. The teachers are nice and have a good curriculum, but it doesn't vary from year to year, so if your child goes for multiple years they repeat the same songs/experiments/projects every year. It is a private, not-for-profit school, and that is good and bad. The good thing is their is a volunteer Board that handles the finances, policies, etc for the school. The bad side of that is children with behavioral issues (physically aggressive with others, excessive crying from separation issues) take a large amount of time and attention from the teachers, leaving the rest of the students with less direct teaching and adult interactions. The first year there was a floater teacher/teachers aid that was very helpful in these situations, but that position didn't exist in the 2nd and 3rd year for us. We would have gone elsewhere for the 3rd year but Covid restrictions kept our preferred school from opening. The room has multiple stations that kids can choose to play with items like play doh/floam, a water station, painting, play kitchen, etc, so they choose where they spend time, and then there is something teacher-led for the children to interact with the teacher. It's nice for kids to pick what they do, but there isn't a structure in place to ensure kids participate in the teacher-led portion, and if that is where the true curriculum planned for the day or week happens, it's possible your child is just playing all day. That's fine for part of the time, but we found it happened a lot more frequently than we wanted. We were looking for social interaction as well as teaching kindergarten preparation skills, and we ended up teaching most of the skills at home. There was a change in the Director position during our time there, and we did not feel that the new Director had the same skills or strengths as the previous one, and we did not agree with the handling of classroom issues that indirectly impacted our child. Maybe with time this will improve, but we were often frustrated or disappointed in the processes in place.

Our daughter has met wonderful friends and the level of education is exactly what we hoped for. It's also amazing to see the level of diversity in her classmates. I did however recently spend a weekend on the campus familiarizing myself with the grounds and availing myself of the facilities. The campus is spread across 300 acres along the Farmington River. Most of the campus buildings are located inside a mile loop surrounded by sprawling fields that include a football field, several baseball and soccer fields and tennis courts. The campus also has an art museum, concert hall, greenhouse and chicken coop. There is a large athletic facility with an 8 lane 25 yard swimming pool. The dorms are clean and well updated. The interiors were all well maintained with clean carpets and freshly painted walls. Every thing looks like it has been recently renovated and doesn't have the worn out institutional feel a lot of dorms I've seen have. I only had a chance to see a small part of the campus but what I saw was very impressive. While at Loomis I went jogging along the mile loop around campus, went sledding near the river, and went swimming in the indoor pool. Overall Loomis Chaffee has a beautiful campus that feels more like a small liberal arts college than a high school and gives you the feeling of being nestled away deep into the heart of New England. The school has an excellent academic reputation and a particularly good history department. There is a lot of support, either from teachers (mostly living on campus) or student tutoring centers. Student body is a mix of all nationalities and every kind of background. Everyone can be his or her self in this community. It is not at all pretentious, rather, the atmosphere is pretty down to earth. If you are lucky enough to be admitted, it's a great place to enjoy high school. There is something for everyone, and even after spending four years there, it's hard to take advantage of everything the school has to offer! There are so many opportunities. The coursework is demanding at any level, so be ready to study. You will not have a lot of free time, as everything is very structured. AP courses are no longer offered here, they only offer regular courses, honors, and CL. Courses on offer go to very high levels.
