Aww bless 'em, it's only a wee airport but they're really trying, and as airports go, this one is actually quite good.
Prior to security, it's a bit rubbish. There's one coffee shop and that's it. And they have the stupidest security system ever - you can pay extra to go through the Express Lane, while everyone else stands in the normal queue. Let me get this straight - you want me to pay extra for doing what the hell you should be doing anyway? Pfft! Do not pay extra people! This way lies madness! The security is always very slow - it's the way it's designed - it bottlenecks when people are collecting their belongings from the machine.
Anyway, it gets better after that, and there is loads of stuff to keep you occupied. There's not many shops - the usual stuff - an Accessorize, a shop selling overpriced trendy T shirts etc, a wee amusement arcade, far too many WH Smiths, the usual, you know. But they have a massive duty free type shop which is actually good, and a Boots, and lots of places to eat. There's a couple of pub type outlets, a Burger King, and a couple of coffee bar type outlets. It's good for an airport.
For the wee hungry vegan, you'll probably do better here that you would in a bigger airport such as Heathrow. There's a SOHO cofee place, and you can usually get baked potatoes there, or maybe a salad thing, the WH Smith sells the Food Doctor range so you could get some toasted soya beans or some sort of other healthy snack, and you might get one of the vegan hummous and carrot sandwiches from Boots. There is no EAT though, and no M&S Food. Which I think should be against the law. EVERY airport should have an M&S Food. Get it sorted East Midlands. I would also like a juice bar please.
There's plenty of seating, and it's placed beside the windows so you can watch the pretty planes go past, and there are lots of screens, so you don't need to get up and wander off from your seat to see how your flight is getting on.
But the best thing is that they have wi-fi hotspots, so you can play on Facebook, or Yelp, or whatever you like via your smartphone. Unlike most other airports where you usually have to pay to access their wi-fi. I'm convinced the evil lizard people block the wi-fi signals at airports.
Overall, quite a good airport really.. Shame the BMI baby route from Glasgow has just been cancelled. read more
