Three masses during the weekends, church events going on all year long, bilingual masses, and a wonderful preist make this church feel welcoming to multiple cultures in fort smith. I personally love the church family that I have found while being part of this parish.

The marker reads, "The first Catholic church in Fort Smith was a log structure at North 3rd and D Street. The Church of St. Patrick was dedicated March 5, 1848. Bishop Andrew Byrne had purchased a square mile of land on the outskirts of Fort Smith in 1847, upon which stood the abandoned Fort Belknap, which had been commanded by future President Zachary Taylor. In 1853, five Sisters of Mercy arrived from Ireland and established a convent and school. During the Civil War they cared for the sick and injured of both sides. A white frame church erected at the head of Garrison Avenue in 1867 served the congregation until damaged by a deadly Jan. 11, 1898 cyclone. The magnificent red brick and cut-stone church designed by Chicago architect Adolphus Druiding was dedicated June 1, 1899." The church offers Mass in English and Spanish a number of times on Sunday, daily in English and twice per week in Spanish. They also host several classes from Communion through Confirmation. I came to West-Ark Church of Christ for a wedding, not a service, so this will be more of a review…read moreof the facilities rather than other aspects of the church such as the community or the pastor. The church was huge. Not only the main auditorium, but the whole building in general. The wedding was held in the main room where the services take place and there were four different sections of seats with 3 aisles. The front of the room was spacious with a stage and a large projector screen. There were also beautiful stain glass windows around the room. The reception was also held in the same church just a different building. It was a basketball gym that had been decorated really nicely with many tables and a dance floor. Above the gym around the perimeter was a track that you could run on. Also while walking from the wedding to the reception, I saw offices and classrooms. This church was large and seems like it has many different areas available for the activities that take place on Sunday mornings and throughout the week!
