I was walking around the Mercato shopping center in Naples when I spotted this art gallery. East West was founded in 2000 on Fifth by Olga Arkhangelskaya. Olga works alongside her daughter Leeza Arkhangelskaya who joined the business in 2013. According to the East West Fine Art website, they specialize in "contemporary international artists, with a focus on Russian and Eastern European fine art." There is a list of 80 artists on the website along with upcoming gallery events. I was drawn into East West by the art of Annalu who was born in San Donà del Piave, Italy. From the bio on the website, "the major focus of her works is on the theme of water, primeval central element of life. Water is the origin of all things: everything is made of water and everything returns to water, as the Greek philosopher Thales believed. An artist disciple of metamorphosis intent to penetrate the mysteries of creation, capable of assembling in­congruent elements such as resins and paper, bark and fiberglass, bi­tumen and sand, cement and roots, to create new realities, suspended worlds where alchemy is lightness." I am not an art critic so I am not sure what all of that means but I know I like it. Tiny colorful butterflies make up the leaves of trees while other pieces of art are colorful resin circles. Realistically it is all out of my price range but I enjoyed window shopping. If you are in the market to purchase, a Yelp check in can net net you $1,000 off certain pieces of art. I think that is the most money off I ever seen in a Yelp check in. Tucking that away for later. Seriously, these ladies are highly educated and obviously know what they are doing so if you are looking to purchase art in the Naples area, you will want to pay East West a visit. read more

Eastwest Fine art is a gem in Naples. Olga Arkhangelskaya, who owns the gallery with her daughter, Leeza, are a passionate and knowledgeable art experts. Leeza is an expert on contemporary art and Olga, educated at Harvard, is also an expert on the avant garde Russian artists. The gallery contains pieces that could be studied in a university or displayed in a beautiful commercial space/home. (One of the artists Leeza showed us is regularly commissioned by Britsh and Arab royal families!) There is such a wide range for every taste: nature pieces (flowers/animals), realism with social commentary, and sculptural pieces in resin. Leeza and Olga explain them beautifully, based on their knowledge of history, culture, and religion. They allowed us to understand each piece more deeply, and it was so thought provoking we discussed their interpretations long after we left. They are also modest and gracious, never trying to intimidate you with their knowledge, and they are also careful to get things right. They were especially kind to my daughter who felt inspired to see the art and learn from them. Naples is lucky to have such a spectacular gallery and two brilliant ambassadors for contemporary Russian art in town. read more

This was second visit to Naples, and first time in Mercato. I stopped by Gallery on Fifth and saw very high quality Eastern European artwork. I met Olga, who founded the gallery in early 2000s, and we talked for nearly an hour. Her passion and love for art is contagious! She told me about the exhibition of socialist realist artwork that she will have in her gallery in December. There were some conservators working on restoring the artwork. I have seen some art of this kind before in magazines, but never in person. I am very much looking forward to the exhibit. read more
