A mix between a gift shop, a $2 shop, an oriental shop and a furniture store, this place has a little bit of everything. Have a bit of a venture in if you're passing by, but I'm not entirely sure what purpose would bring you to this store specifically, although they do have a lot of things that one may need at odd intervals of time, something obscure, like Asian beads or something. As long as you know the store intimately enough to know that they have what you need, you will find what you're looking for. If not, this store may not daw your attention. Halloween costumes for example, or cheap jewellery. The place feels a bit like a treasure hunt, rather than purpose built.

The smell of scented candles and incense wafts over you as you make your way through the crowded maze of trinkets that make up Eastern Flair. The shop is an eclectic mix of cooking equipment, Eastern-inspired homewares, cushions, teapots, furniture, Halloween costumes (all year round), tatami screens and cheap womens accessories. Upstairs is the "50% off" section, which mainly consists of more Eastern-inspired furniture, particularly cabinets, mirrors, draws, lamps and hat-stands. The teapot sets here are my favourite item and for an entire year my friends could count on receiving an Eastern Flair teapot set Japanese style teapots with 2 - 4 cups) for any given occasion. Their Moroccan tea glasses are beautiful and affordable too, as are their ornate selection of tajines. Clothes make up only a small section of the store and are not the reason most people come here. They do sell a good range of fisherman pants though, which seem to be an 'at-home-essential' wardrobe item and they have beautiful scarves with pretty good deals (one for $10, two for $15). The jewellery is mostly tacky/gothic inspired, but they do have the one thing that sells it for me - Lava Lamps. Sold.

Newtown is one of my favourite parts of Sydney and I must have walked past Eastern Flair a gazillion times, yet today was the first time I went inside and I now I am kicking myself for not checking it out sooner. I needed to buy a gift for a friend with eclectic taste and Eastern Flair solved my dilemma. It is the most enormous shop with an unbelievable range of stock. I could spend hours in there. Their stock range is far beyond eastern in style. The eastern stuff is great with a wide range of Buddhas, elephants, linens, clothes, furniture, an enormous selection of jewellery. They also have other cool stuff as funky picture frames, beautiful bird- cages, masks, lamps and seriously cool framed signs and pictures, apart from the cute meditating wooden frog I bought my friend, I bought myself a framed picture of an old fashioned telephone booth (you have to see it).

This place has upstairs secrets. I was allowed up there to check out the dining chairs, and that's…read morewhere they keep their works in progress: wooden frames awaiting re-upholstery. It looks a bit creepy up there, like lots of wooden naked furniture limbs, all entangled up and dust coated. The downstairs has fancy re-upholstered lounges and armchairs, while the upstairs has dining chairs. Despite the name, A Pair Of Chairs do sell chairs singly, and they also have coffee tables and cabinets, but the emphasis is undoubtedly on the chairs. This is not a store where you will be left alone, the owners will definitely approach you and gently push sales. There's a lot of teak, a lot of Parker, and a lot of 50s style going on.... It's not everyone's taste, but if you're into mid-twentieth century design (specifically that straight-backed 50s look), then you've found the right strip of shops on Regent street to keep you busy. Here, you can buy the items unrestored or nice and fixed up - depends how much you want to pay. Last time I was here the woman owner told me to supervise the shop while she went upstairs, which was trusting and I took the responsibility seriously (ahem), of course .... nobody came in .... They also reupholster your old stuff, which is nice to file away in the back of your head ("when I am old and have money maybe I will get that chair fixed up....")

Just had my 60s sofa reupholstered, perfect style. Their items are industrial modern with a slice…read moreof retro and urban cool. Kim's an expert.
