Yesterday, we toured Eastern State Penitentiary. I grumbled a bit because of its "hefty" $17 price tag, because, Good grief!! How could a prison tour be so expensive?? WOW WOW WOW! What an eye opening lesson in history and the inhumanity of our justice system. While we have come far from the mid-1800s, when this facility was conceived and built, we have a long way to go. If you are in Philly, looking to fill some time with a couple of hours of thought provoking horror, this is the tour for you. What a dump! Broken windows everywhere, dirty rooms that haven't been touched in years and a complete lack of heat and A/C. I definitely would not want to spend the night here. (Shoulder Tap) Oh, it's supposed to be like that? Well, they nailed it then! Eastern State Penitentiary in Philly is a great way to kill a few hours. The self guided audio tour is very well done and lets you listen to Steve Buscemi tell you about various aspects of the prison as you walk around. Simply enter a number and press play and you're told where to go, what to look at, and you get to learn about the history of this magnificent prison. After the "guided" tour which is about 10 stops, you can wander around and check out other areas that aren't part of the tour. There are many so make sure you get a map and check out what you want to see. I wish the guided tour went to some of these areas as it can be tricky to find some of them. Weather can also play a huge factor so if it's cold out, dress like you'll be outside. I can imagine in the summer it gets pretty hot in there too. And even if you're not going to buy any souvenirs, head to the gift shop as you can see the visitation area where prisoners met with their visitors. That's prior to where they check tickets, so that's a freebie! read more

There's something beautiful about buildings maintained enough to keep them from crumbling. Eastern State was clearly well built, is maintained, but also showing it's signs of age and the dust of a thousand inmates (the number is poetic license) still lingers in the halls. It's really cool to see, particularly the areas that are being worked on. It's a definite life goal to go back for Terror Behind the Walls. read more

I've lived in Philadelphia my whole life and I've only ever been to Eastern State Penitentiary for their Terror Behind the Walls Halloween haunted house, but I'm so glad I finally got to visit for the historial aspect. Pro Tip: Being that this is an abandoned prison, if it is cold outside it will also be cold for the duration of your visit inside the grounds. For whatever reason when I visited on February 29th I had anticipated at least a slight break from the cold (like maybe less wind??) but I basically froze my fingers off. They did have heat lamps in the more commonly trafficked areas, but that's definitely something to consider. Bundle up' The purchase of your ticket includes and easy to use audio guide, with numbers clearly marked throughout the tour. I'm a huge history person, and to be able to learn as much as I did from an audio guide that was included is fantastic. I will say that some of the clips were a little bit lengthy in relation to the small area covered, but I'd personally rather more information than less. There was so much to learn about one of America's most famous and most expensive penitentiary ever built. I spent about 3 hours thoroughly wandering the grounds and listening to most (if not all) of the audio clips on the guide. My absolute favorite part of the entire tour was Cell Block 7-- one of the newer blocks built with two floors. You're able to wander up the steps to get a higher vantage point which is very cool. Overall if you're someone who likes history and learning, this is a great way to learn something different about the past America's prison as well as Philadelphia. read more

I've been wanting to come here for a really long time. I always try to go to the haunted house they host but could never make it. I was finally able to take a regular self guided tour through the facility and really enjoyed it. You're given head sets and can walk through the facility as you're told about it's history at your own pace. Just a warning, if it's cold out, be sure to dress warm enough because the penitentiary is cold and damp. Occasionally you'll come across heaters so that the staff doesn't freeze but I wish I'd dressed a little warmer. Despite that, I really enjoyed all of the history and stories. Being able to walk through the halls of the penitentiary and see old cells, gave you some insight on the conditions. There was also plenty information on how this correctional system compared to others and evolved. read more

What a creepy fucking place. This prison, dating back to almost Revolutionary times, is smack dab in the middle of Philadelphia. The city effectively built up around it, and given that it looks like a damned fortress from outside, this serves to make it even more imposing. Price to get in was reasonable and staff was all at least moderately friendly. The audio tour worked well ~95% of the time which just 1 area (forget which one) being a little off. The whole place is in a state of ruin, so you have to be careful where you walk; I got stuck in the mud on more than 1 occasion in the yards as it had just rained. I really liked the colonial section they walked you through first, although the Steve "Crazy Eyes" Buscemi narration made it a bit funny. The Pep the Dog stuff was funny, the synagogue was weird, the art installations (especially the one about queens) were good, and death row was pretty oppressive. Al Capone's cell was closed for renovation when we came which was the only downside. We spent a few hours here and probably could've spent at least 2 more. Can't complain though from a value standpoint, as they've clearly done a good job presenting this prison and making sure it's relevant for modern audiences. Would definitely come back for the Halloween shows they do! read more

Came for 2 reasons - terror behind the walls and daytime viewing of a delapidated prison. Terror behind the walls was fun. Not too scary for me since there were so many people around and I chose not to get the necklace that allows the actors to touch you. I did find myself running at times but also laughing. I screamed at the most stupid things like puffs of air. We went during opening weekend so the lines were crazy. They have separate lines for each time slot. We waited an hour outside to get in. Seemed like people just kept showing up for the 9pm time slot line even though it was well past 9. We had the 9:30 slot and were first in that line. There were creepy costumed guys scaring the people waiting in line. The next day I enjoyed the self guided tour of the prison which is narrated by Steve Buscemi and others. Very easy to follow the narration and stopping points along the way. We saw Al Capone's old cell which has been recreated to look like it was when he lived there. Several artists did some work inside some cells, including a whole car that must have been disassembled and reassembled inside. I hoped to see some ghosts in my photos but no dice. read more

I am not a huge fan of historic sites, museums and exhibits but I was really impressed and blown away with this one. I honestly did not know Philadelphia was a city with such history and culture and being able to visit one of America's oldest prisons was an informational, educational and unique experience that you can't have in other big cities. We decided to visit last minute and the front gate guy told us to purchase online for the discounted rate, which we did. We were able to get in and the beauty of this tour is that everything is self-guided. They hand you an mp3 along with headphones that allow you to walk around the penitentiary at your own rate, discovering the old prison and finding out how people used to live in these things! It opened my eyes to a lot of things -- and it's really interesting as they also have segments where they cover the current justice system and how it needs reform! It's a great tour and you get to check out multiple parts of the abandoned prison and learn about inmates who spent their time here. I think I spent a total of 2 hours here and I'm so glad I was able to check out this historic landmark... it's only $17 and it was worth every penny. They are also doing some Halloween Nights event and it looks spooky -- wish I could've checked it out if my stay was longer! read more

Eastern State Penitentiary is the world's most expensive prison that looks more like a castle from the outside. Opened in 1829, its first inmate was Charles Williams, who was a farmer sentenced to 2 years because of theft. When he was escorted to his cell, he had an eyeless hood placed over his head. This was done so other inmates would not see his face and make it easier for him to be released into society once his sentence is up so no one would recognize him. Wearing the hood also made sure that inmates would not see the layout of the prison and figure out an escape plan. Each time the inmate would leave their cell, they were required to be hooded. Through the audio tour, narrated by actor Steve Buscemi, which is included with admission price, you will learn numerous of interesting facts like the one above. There are 15 cell blocks and featured exhibits to occupy your time while you tour the grounds here. Please note that there are free docent led tours, but are only available at 2 pm. Spots for the tour run out, so make sure to reserve early (as it is first come/ first serve). During the time of operation of this prison (1829- 1971), most cell blocks had a barbershop, complete with the originally preserved barber chair used. There would be one inmate that would be assigned to cut and shave other inmate's hair. It was interesting to learn that those inmates would be given sharp razors (only when they work). Although most of the prisoners during the time of operation were adult males, they did take in females and children. But they were in a separate block. Being the most expensive prison, cells were centrally heated and equipped with running water, a flushable toilet, and a skylight. Al Capone, the famous gangster, was imprisoned here for 8 months in 1929 and he had a very fancy cell that was believed to have a second bed (unusual since the other cells only had 1 inmate per cell), oriental rug, oil painting and radio. Definitely much more inviting than any other cell here. In the mid 1920's, Pep the dog (a black labrador) was sentenced to life at Eastern State for murdering the governor's wife's cat (say it ain't so Pep). He got his mugshot taken and even was assigned an inmate number, C2559. He was not kept in a cell and was free to roam the the cell block. Pep the dog had articles written about him being a cat killer and slandering the poor pup's good reputation, which eventually prompted the governor's wife to clear Pep's name and had said that he never killed her cat and just wanted to give Pep to the prisoners to help boost morale. Definitely ahead of its time, Pep was like a therapy dog for the prisoners. On the day my husband and I visited Eastern State, it just happened to rain and pour during our visit. Completely forgot to bring the panchos that I packed in my luggage and umbrella, we ended up purchasing 2 panchos at the gift shop which were $3 each ($6.48 after tax for two). The majority of things to see are indoors but not everything is connected. Some of the exhibits are air conditioned but the cell blocks are not and can imagine it can get really hot in here. Because of the heavy down pour during our visit, there were a few parts that ended up having to close because of the flooding between cell block 7 and 8. During our 2.5 hour visit, we saw most of everything but would definitely come back to see the parts we didn't see and also check out one of the docent led tours to learn more. Please note that it is cheaper to purchase tickets on line, you save $2. There are restrooms but only right when you start the tour. They are porta potties but the nice ones you would rent for an event. Running water, soap and paper towels are available. Eastern State Penitentiary has also been featured in music videos, TV shows and movies that include Twelve Monkeys, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, TV show Ghost Hunters and Tina Turner's One Of The Living music video. If visiting Philadelphia, I highly recommend that you consider making Eastern State Penitentiary on your must visit list. read more

The highlight of my trip, everyone. I highly recommend every tourist to have this in their itinerary. I usually don't do museums, but these type of "museums", I am all for. Formerly a prison, it is flipping amazing to see how they preserved everything to help us learn about and re-see history. Before you start, you receive a headset with a MP3 player that plays numbered recordings for displays on the site. It was such an engaging and interactive experience because of it. I especially loved the exhibit where the quotes on the photos went along with the audio. It's also cool they added a new exhibit for 2020. Went here with a group of friends and it was not as good as it was in previous years. There were less attractions that were not scary (more props than people). The drinks were pretty price and not the best. Still made for cute pictures! I can't blame them for not being the best, since of COVID they can't have as many people or attractions. The people also couldn't touch it so that spook factor was gone. My advice- save your money and wait until next year (or after) until it goes back to normal! read more

If your into History and exploring old landmarks, or just want to know what old prisons were like; this is the place for you! This place was so cool! You get to learn about this history beind the Penitentiary, and learn about different criminals who were housed here like Al Capone. I really liked it. This is a perfect place to take your kids, your family, and even your friends. It can be enjoyed by people of all ages and backgrounds. You spend most of the time walking as you tour the place so make sure your prepared for that. What's cool is that they give you headphones becaude its a self-guided audio tour. There are bathrooms here also so that's definitely a plus. My lady and I just went to the bathroom across the street at the OCF Cafe prior so we could spend more time walking around the Penitentiary without breaks. read more

So this was super fun! I'm not a huge prison fan or anything, but I highly recommend this as one of your stops if you visit Philly. Just the fact that the prison looks like a castle on the outside and the layout is in a spoke design is visually appealing. On top of that, this was also where Al Capone stayed! Every entry comes with a self guided audio. If you do the audio tour only, it is 35 minutes. But if you want to do this place justice, give yourself at least 2 hours. Since I'm money thrifty, I did a quick search for promo code and was able to get the ticket down to just $9 each. It's easily accessible using public transit. (That's how I got there!) Came here for my birthday activity. Staff was extremely helpful. I had to leave a ticket at box office for my friend and the staff was more than accommodating. The tour is audio which makes for an informational and engaging experience; got to live through history!! The inner geek in me loved it. Humanizing those in the criminal justice system through their narratives and time served. Me and my friends were able to go on a tour of the hospital wing with Tom, he was incredibly knowledgeable and brought this place to life. Great historic spot for those interested in the prison system back in the day. It was amazing to see the architecture and way of organization for the prisoners. Such a big difference from today's prison. The interior is quite dilapidated with many wings closed off. The are many of the cells open for viewing and even entry into the cell. It definitely gave you the feeling of solitary confinement on a whole other level. The cell was dank and cold mid summer so I could only imagine how it would be in the winter time. The is a headset device for you to wear on a self guided tour. It would take you a few hours if you continued with the entire tour via the headset sho we only did the main tour. Overall, great experience. It was quite creepy during the day so i expect the haunted Halloween experience to be extremely terrifying. read more

Who knew?! This place had never been on my radar, until out of town friends had it on their list. I've been to some of the more notorious prison museums in the world, as famous as Alcatraz in San Francisco to the much more obscure Devil's Island prison made famous by Papillion, located in the remote French Guianas. This one was just as good! PRO TIP: If you are taking the PHLASH bus, it is an easy walk to the entrance from the corner stop. The audio documentary is SO SO well done - there wasn't a single boring episode. You should really listen to the first 10 stops, but there were at least 30 different stops with audio portions that were worth a listen. Plan on spending a minimum of 2 hours here. read more

I've always wanted to visit mainly because of the notorious prisoners and the supposed "haunted" history of the building. I wasn't pushed or pinched today but was very happy nonetheless to be able to visit. It was so interesting to see the first Penitentiary that gave rise to 300 more prisons to be built after Eastern State. It's a step back in time with the pealing paint, ceiling falling in, old hardware that you can imagine must have creaked and groaned even in its heyday. The guides to help you along if needed were nice, especially the young man in the gift shop. Informative and funny, I wish I'd caught his name. Don't forget to pass through the gift shop to listen to a short movie and sit in the prisoners visiting room. It's amazing to think back on such an isolated period they would have had. read more

My husband and I took a guide-led tour of Eastern State over the weekend. What an incredible experience. Our tour guide gave so much great info and answered all questions in our group (maybe 20 people?) with ease. She clearly was passionate about the subject area. The "stable ruin" itself is a lot of walking, so make sure you wear comfortable shoes and dress appropriately for the weather, as both the audio and guide led tours have indoor and outdoor components. After our guide-led tour was over, we were able to walk the grounds until closing. We didn't get to see the entire premises that is open for the museum while on the tour, so we explored a bit more. We even got to snag an audio guide to listen to the different exhibits in whatever order we wanted. There are a few cells in the different blocks that are open to go inside...very creepy! Some of them had artist exhibitions inside, which were less creepy to go in, in my opinion. Overall, a great stop for anyone visiting the area. You can learn so much about the early prison systems as well as how they evolved over the years. read more

Sneaky Eastern State Penitentiary lures you with the promise of Insta--ready old buildings, but then it makes you learn things. Yeah, the great structure, the Al Capone anecdotes and the Halloween events show the fun side, but then you have exhibits discussing the psychological toll of solitary, prison rape and Guantanamo. This isn't like going to The Umbrella Factory Museum where they tell you actual umbrella production stopped in 1989 or is offsite and closed to the public. The facility looks like it hasn't been changed much since it was in use, right down to the cells and bars. read more

We weren't sure what this visit would bring us, but the answer was: a lot to think about, one of the more thought-provoking museum/historical site visits we've ever done. Why are people incarcerated, who is incarcerated, what are the consequences of incarceration? All of these questions come to the surface as well as a profound view of how the role of incarceration changed over time in our society. I'd put this on a must-do list for Philadelphia, on a level with the Liberty Bell. There is a reasonable charge for admission (roughly 20$ pp) and advance purchase of tickets is probably a good idea in high tourist season. I've been to Eastern State both for the regular tour and for Terror Behind the Walls and highly recommend doing both of them at least once. The regular tour is very informative and intriguing, even if you don't do the audio tour. I enjoyed learning about the penitentiary's history and seeing how the prison system has evolved over time. If you are in the area, you definitely need to stop by for a tour! I also went to Terror Behind the Walls in October and really enjoyed it. I went on one ofth lowest cost days and thought it was worth my money, but probably would have been a bit disappointed if I had paid anymore. I think Terror Behind the Walls is perfect for anyone who wants to go to a haunted house, but can't commit to the full terror of a place like Field of Screams. read more

Possibly the most fascinating "prison" museum/memoir/historical site one can stumble across in NE Unite States. This is the oldest prison in the US and the most expensive if I understand. There is a significant left swing for prison rights and call to reform the prison center, which was unexpected for me since the political reform platform and signs everywhere highly tried to sway the audience in also taking action. You'll see statistics showing the surging amounts of prisons, prison gangs, and number of minorities improportionately imprisoned compared to whites. I thought the prison gang stories were interesting and didn't know of such phenomenon in the jails but that makes sense as to why gangs still continue or are born outside of jails. There's also women's rights stashed inside. It was interesting that the whole jail system was against jailing itself. I will never forget the crumbling walls, iron wrought doors, and the haunting dark halls that are sometimes fenced off to visitors. It was freezing when I went and I can't imagine what it was like without the heat. Major thing you're here to see is the 97 foot long tunnel that was dug out by 2 prisoners who managed to escape to freedom briefly for just 3 hours and Slick Willy and Tenuto who managed to be on the run for years after. When one sees the thickness of the cement and mortar walls, truly amazing to see the perseverance and effort to escape this fortress. You're also here to see Al Capone's cell equipped with a nice Persian rug, lamp, desk, easy chair, and nicer bed than other cells. He was held here 7 months for having weapons. read more

Eastern State Penitentiary was one of my favorite museums, if you can call it that, during my trip to Philadelphia. The tour is an audio guided self-tour and you are given a map with various of points of reference. The 1st part of the tour is narrated by Steve Buscemi but after that you pick and choose which points of reference you want to learn more about. Some of the cooler things you can learn about are the women and children that were here as this was an all inclusive prison system. Al Capone's mock cell is a popular attraction that is made up like a fancy apartment. They admit that his "luxurious" stay at Eastern Penn is probably grossly exaggerated but they still play it up. They have many other points of interests like the stories of 2 attempted escapes and where they happened, the baseball field where baseballs would fly over the wall and people would throw them back over with drugs and other contraband with them, plus they talk about the movies made here and the prospect of ghosts. The Death Row area was quite interesting as well. You could spend hours in here despite most of the cells all looking the same just because of how well done the audio-tour is and the interesting stories behind them. The place is definitely eerie and not a place that I would have wanted to spend my time trying the rehabilitate my sins. As you would expect the prison is not climate controlled, so a visit during milder temps is ideal. We went on a day when it was 94 degrees and it probably contributed to me not spending as much time here as I would have liked. read more

absolutely loved my visit here. I am all about the creepy places to see. It was actually not as eerie or dark as I thought it would be and I even went alone. Their audio tour is great and full of information. They also have a lot of signage as well so there is no lack of information for you. I found parking literally across the street. It's for 3 hours I believe. The surrounding area is cute and has a good cafe and restaurant too. I highly recommend stopping by! I have visited Eastern State Pen at least 3 times and each time I find it even more fascinating with the stories, preservation and history that is location shares with guests. The first visit we did the audio tour and I have to say it was incredibly informative to hear the voices of people who had first hand experiences here and the stories they shared, really brought the experience of the visit to a 100%. The second visit we brought friends what were visiting and they really enjoyed it, lets face it, its not everyday you get to walk around a prison like this. Now, I have yet to attend any of the haunted Halloween events, I have heard that it is a pretty fun experience and I should consider it, this year for sure. I really love the little gift shop and have bought souvenirs and am pretty partial to my stuffed gargoyle, there are books and cool things for the kids to buy. Parking for us was on the street and entrance fee is reasonable and the location staff are very informative and happy to assist and answer questions. read more
