They don't teach you to handle your executive dysfunction or ADHD, they see someone excel academically and assume they don't need help. They didn't prepare me for the adult world, I survived through sheer luck and clawing my way back up to stable ground. That said, while the school itself failed me, there were many teachers who made the hell of my teenage years bearable.

Three examples: As a minor, at 17 years old, I was locked in a room with the two female counselors (with no adult representing me or any parent present for such a conversation) while the counselors (Tanya & Margaret) randomly started to tell me I should not be having *** at my age or with the boy I had a crush on at the time. I was confused because I had not been active and I was a young girl. When I said that I was not active, they rolled their eyes and said "stop lying, you are the kind of girl. we see this all the time." Absolutely disgusting and inappropriate conversation to have with a minor. My parents were furious. The second example is: I excitedly told my teacher (Wilfred) that I had been accepted to the University of Alabama my senior year! Only for him to turn to me in front of all my classmates and say "You will flunk out anyway" and turned back to his computer. I was laughed at by all of my classmates and my only friend in school had to stand up for me to a teacher who should be viewed as a mentor and safe person, but instead was one of my biggest bullies throughout my time at The Cottage School. My third example was: I was living through a very difficult period of time at home and in my own mind. This put a big strain on my sleeping, and I was not getting proper sleep at all. In the mornings, I was involuntarily falling asleep in my classes and would consistently be punished for it instead of anyone checking on my well being. Especially at a school that is supposed to have been specialized towards children with special circumstances. There were a thousand other instances that led to me deeming my time at The Cottage School to be mildly scarring for me as a young woman. However, I will say that Siree, Roshonda, Ryan and his wife Lydia, Katya, Lynn and Hector were the absolute highlights of that place, and should absolutely be recognized for the amazing and lasting impressions they leave on their students. True empathetic and patient angels, every one of them. With that said, I hope that The Cottage School can learn from what I've shared of my experience.

Poor leadership and top down management. The teachers are nice for the most part but many have been rude to students. There has been many cases of drug use on the school premises but most cases have been handled properly. Girls will get dress cut for shorts, when often the principal's outfit happens to be worse. Guys will also get dress cut for the length of their shorts. There is a point system called PBIS which makes students often feel left out because they didn't make the rewards. Which in most cases students were absent and weren't able to receive any points because they were sick or other similar things. The majority of students are well educated and there are lots of opportunities for extra curricular and high school credits. I would say overall Crabapple is a decent school.

We choose to take our daughter out of our highly rated public school system and to send her to…read moreAtlanta Academy for middle school. She was in 2/3rd during Covid and really got left behind. Administration was also slow to approve testing for learning disabilities. We choose AA because YES they do offer several programs for children of all learning abilities. Our daughter was able to bring her IEP and we knew all her accommodations would be met in a small setting with a high level of accountability from the faculty. But this school didn't just offer the academics we wanted it also had an amazing arts and music education which is not forfeited as it is many other places. We are also not religious and we were thrilled to find a school that feels more inclusive to people of all faiths wail also using it as an opportunity to teach. After 1 year my daughter is not only thriving she has blown past all expectations. If I had the money I'd send all my kids here tomorrow. When the younger grades contribute by reading or performing in front of a packed auditorium I am truly impressed. Wow. I am also amazed by how many teacher have come to this school FOR their children. They love the school so much they have joined the faculty. That to me speaks volumes. Don't pass this school up over 1 reviews on yelp. Take the tour and make an informed decision for yourself. So far we are beyond thrilled and excited for more to come.

On top of that, the school apparently needed thousands of dollars just to run a party, which was a hut with coconuts. And during the sub-zero temperatures, all the middle school students are forced to take the side entrance. And if they don't, it is an immediate write-up. And my son also got blamed by the teacher for a mess he did not create, and when he told the lunch lady that a student stole his water bottle, she, and I quote, said: "You are too grown, handle this yourself." And you all claim that you put the students at the center of everything. The only decent people at this school are Mrs. Uribe and Dr. Ikone Mason. My son's old English teacher Mr Brooking, would've been here had the school not forced him to resign due to "Unforeseen circumstances." And let's not forget that we need to ban bananas just because ONE teacher is allergic, by that logic, why don't we also ban Eggs and Chicken because students are allergic to them too? I have had two daughters go through all the 3s, one will be in Pre-K in the fall and one was there in 2010-11. Not only is this a family owned and operated business, they manage to bring the staff, children (and their parents and siblings!) into their fold as an extended family as well. As is the case with all families, there are sometimes challenges. They are ALWAYS handled by the Director on down immediately and in a way that will always benefit the children. While I think everyone is entitled to their opinion and I will fight for your right to express it, I respectfully disagree with the negative comments written below. There is NO WAY any child was drug across a room or tied to a chair. Now I will agree that maybe what was seen was a child tripping and being caught or a game of Rapunzel "tying up" Flynn Ryder and I'm confident if asked the situation would be explained. As for the use of the word "teacher". I believe we all use that word pretty freely. From Sunday School "teachers' to Music Class "teachers" to Ballet "teachers", I would guess most of those "teachers" do not have any type of teaching degree but, it does make it a heck of a lot easier to explain who they are to our children. Also, afternoon in any pre-school is not the educational time of the day. Academics are always in the morning, while the afternoon is for fun and let's face it, day care. And who better to play with the children than teenagers - that's why they are so often hired as babysitters, right? I can't speak to the movies being shown but again, there are exceptions to every rule and it seems that this could have been solved easily by sending in a few movies from home since they only watch them on Fridays. Also, in all the classes we have been in any PG movie that was sent in for Special Movie day was replaced by a classroom video and all the children understood why they could not watch it. We only have one more year left at Young Life and just writing that makes me sad. I can't imagine any parent, who is truly looking for a wonderful foundation to their child's academic career while still maintaining family values and open lines of communication would find anything less than perfection at this school!!
