Best Buy (formerly Future Shop)…read more While I was in town, I did some shopping at this Future Shop in Saint John. This electronics superstore has most of the toys, gadgets, music, movies, and video games that I enjoy, similar stock to Best Buy (closest Canadian location in Dartmouth, NS). Future Shop reminds me of the former Circuit City stores in the USA with the same bright red and white colors. This location is pretty organized compared to other locations I've been to in BC which seem like a mess. I browsed around the laptop computers, GPS units, big screen HDTVs, cameras, DVDs, and finally onto the good selection of music CDs, many titles not available in the USA. The CD prices here tend to be lower than the smaller mall stores. I did buy a few CDs by Canadian artists for the road, some priced at $9.99. I only wished there were Future Shop stores in the USA since Best Buy and Fry's Electronics are only game left there for electronics after Circuit City's departure. Small store in a nice…read moreplace The Sand Piper is a tiny, one room souvenir shop located right in the center of the village of St Martin. Obviously the location optimizes the amount of summer tourist traffic since many of the large tour buses from St John park right across the street from the Sand Piper. The one room is packed with stuff and I suspect the owners live upstairs in the quaint little house. The place is so small that much of the merchandise is placed outside in the nice weather. Much of the usual touristy stuff can be found here including jewelry, art, cute signs, books and of course the ubiquitous crummy t-shirts and other clothing. A few humorous items but nothing really in bad taste, this is one of the more artistic and enjoyable souvenir shop you will find. Most of the stuff is pretty cheap although some of the art and jewelry will set you back a few bucks. I ended up buying a couple of fun books on the local history and a nice crummy t-shirt. Yep, it's just a souvenir shop designed to catch the tourists visiting the area but it is a cool little place and it's difficult to walk out without finding at least something you will drag back home with you.

We came upon this little village area, and stopped at the small tourist center across the road from the shop. While there, I saw a wonderful children's book and asked the center representative if the author was local. He said she was and when I asked if they sold any of her books, he said the Sandpiper did. That was our next stop, and it was a little treasure. Yes, they could use more room, but the quaintness is one of the things that makes it unique. While looking at their items (and sure, some are "tourist" things, but many others represent the area locals) and if you're interested in children's books, be sure to check those sold here written by Heidi Jardine Stoddart. Each has a short message and signature written by the author, making them especially nice for a keepsake gift for a child. Heidi and her husband live in Rothesbay, NB. She is an elementary school teacher, and a talented artist who illustrates her own books. My great-nephew is getting two for Christmas this year! I'd return to this shop in a heartbeat, and wish we live closer to the area! It's beautiful there.

I'm definitely avoiding this mall as much as possible. While the interior has been renovated it still gives off an air of darkness and despair.

Don't go there if you don't have a lot of time (or patience) on your hands though. The 45s are scattered all over the store with no rhyme or reason as to how they're situated (condition, genre, price, used or new.) After a bit of digging, I got frustrated and moved on. I didn't feel like getting down on my knees to sort through the unalphabetized singles in the milk crates on the floor. SecondSpin dudes, if you're reading this - organize your 45s and pick them up off the floor. Also, the store doesn't have bags. You'll have to bring your own. It was raining the day I was in there so I asked for a bag for my purchases. The counter guy looks at me blankly and says "I have no bags, man." He said this as if I was already supposed to instinctively know this. So I had to put the records under my shirt so they wouldn't get wet. I'm giving them three out of five for their reasonable prices and diversity of stock. I can live with the byob policy but I shouldn't have to bring kneepads to search their stock. Sort it out, guys.
