Fabric has been a meaningful community for our family for years. The kids' programming is top…read morenotch, the messages and live music are meaningful, spiritual, intentionally open-minded, yet often also challenging. Fabric is "contemporary", but it isn't meant to mirror a mega-church experience, it's about engaging in multi-week conversations with connections in the community. I'm sometimes surprised the attendance at Field School on Sunday morning doesn't approach a thousand, because it's exactly the right type of spiritual community for this century. Joining a Fabric group is encouraged but isn't mandated. Groups meet every week or whenever you can make it. Most people choose to become part of one, because it's a way to continue to engage on deeper issues together over a cup of tea or glass of beer. Groups can help us engage with each other's lives at a deeper level but also allow focus to reflect together on the current Fabric conversation. Some have critiqued Fabric, labeling it as surface level, due to a departure from traditional church doctrine and related sermons. I'd argue on the contrary, that it's far from shallow, and rather the opposite. If it is important to you to have someone tell you what you believe about God or Jesus or Creation or Heaven, down to your last thought, then Fabric isn't for you. But, most of us aren't like that. Life isn't like that. Life is about pursuing hopes and dreams, refining our values, developing family and friend relationships, and asking curious questions, which certainly involves asking questions about God and what they means for us. As such, Fabric is simply about living that life in community. Fabric isn't a Church, but Fabric IS church -- For the Rest of Us. Fabric's invitation could well be: Come for the music, stay for the conversation. All are welcome here, EVEN those who identify as Christians, and many of us do. Your faith is important to us. But that goes for everyone who gathers with us. Every person who shows up is important to us, and we are excited to meet you. We want to hear what you are excited about, and we want you in the conversation too!

Some folks have very traditional church backgrounds, some have been deeply harmed by the church, some are neutral about church. We have couples where one has had very positive church experiences and the other is an atheist. What we have in common is a commitment to wrestling together with the big questions of God and the messiness of life. I've been part of the Fabric community for 13 years. Before moving to Minneapolis, I attended a church in Cleveland, OH whose pastor I loved and who walked through important life events with me (e.g. he officiated our wedding, baptised our son). However, with Fabric I've really grown in my understanding of and beliefs about God, Jesus, and the Bible, AND also about being human, parenting, relationships, community. Largely this is because of the conversations that happen not only on Sundays but also with smaller groups during the week. From the outside, it reminds me of an old tv repair shop with stain-glass windows and a small parking lot adjacent to the building. It stands on the corner of Chicago and 38th Street, two very busy and infamous intersections, that have their own stories to tell. The inside of the church is small; two level. When you walk into the double door, there's a small entryway and then a room of many chairs and a pulpit that takes up the majority of the west wall. It's a modest church, with a congregation that is warm, inviting and friendly. Your greeted by ushers and provided with a bulletin of what's going on within the church weekly and for the month and sheet to give any prayer requests that you may have. Service: You're coming for the message, but I suppose the combination factor are the people as well, who help make up the congregation or who visit. The Pastor, Curtis Farrar, preaches a message that has passion and heart and knowledge, but he has an approach that makes him relatable and real. He seems to really care if you have a relationship with God and wants to teach you how to. They have prayer on Monday at 7pm, Bible Study on Wed at 7pm, Friday night service at 7pm, Sunday services at 9 & 11am. I'll be back!

Everything they do has meaning behind it and there are people there who can tell you about it. If you've never experienced traditional liturgical worship, you couldn't ask for a better place to start. The congregation sings the liturgy along with the pastor. And you'll sing about a half a dozen hymns while you're there. Don't worry, there will probably be somebody standing behind you who sings out and lends courage to your voice. If that doesn't work there's an organ and a choir in the loft above and behind you so that the music wafts out and fills the whole space. The lyrics are old and they mean something. It's anything but Christian karaoke with lyrics that make it sound like Jesus is supposed to be your boyfriend. The intention is to "sing doctrine into your heart." If the word "doctrine "makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up, fear not. There are people there that can explain to you why doctrine is your friend. The preaching is straight and solid. It's not a peptalk. It's not going to show you how to keep your marriage faithful and your kids off drugs. The law is reached as law and the gospel is preached as gospel. If "Law & Gospel" is a new one to you, there are people there for that, too. I keep mentioning the people. Don't worry, it's not a cult. You won't have a dozen people trying to love bomb you into the congregation. A few people will say hi to you. If you want to visit with them, you can. If you just wanna sit and take it in you, can do that. But you will be welcomed. I know for a fact because I'm a tourist here myself who stumbled in after finding it on Yelp. I was introduced to Living Word in February 1991 through my then-girlfriend. She attended services…read morethere and invited me to go with her one Sunday morning. It reminded me of a service I might see on TV (later finding out the church just begun broadcasting on a local station). Pastor Mac encouraged first-time visitors to come back again "to take a more accurate measure of us as a church." The next two times I went to Living Word, I still resisted the altar call for salvation. Coming from a traditional Lutheran background, I was a bit uncomfortable in a Full Gospel atmosphere. Then on March 19 of that year, my sister and her husband led me to the Lord at their home in Fargo, North Dakota. Two days later, I met with a pastor from their church. He recommended visiting two fellowships he knew about in the Twin Cities area. One of them was Living Word. Soon I attended membership classes there and decided to make it my home church. For the next two years, I put my audio recording skills to use by volunteering in Living Word's tape ministry. Having access to the church's cassette library helped me grow as a Christian. I listened to numerous sermon tapes at home, at work, and in my car. In addition to Pastor Mac, I heard messages from associate pastors plus guest speakers such as Dwight Thompson, Willie George, Jerry Savelle, Jesse Duplantis, and Kenneth Copeland. Their teachings built my confidence in God's promises of healing and prosperity as well as eternal life in heaven. After a temporary move to the Chicago area, I returned to the Twin Cities in early 1994. By this time, my friend Steve had become a leader in Living Word's evangelism ministry and invited me to go street witnessing with them on Monday nights. The Lord had already put it in my heart to share my faith more. At the end of 1995, the Lord led me to become an usher. After doing that for twelve months, I stepped down to focus more on evangelism. Eventually, the Lord led me to leave Living Word and become a full-time missionary. In recent years, the Lord has led me to return to the Twin Cities area for extended stays. Although I've worked with other churches in the area, I still attend services at Living Word and join them for evangelism outreaches. The church has changed since I first started going there. For example, the worship musicians were (in my opinion) a bit stuffy doing inspirational songs I mostly didn't care for. Now they have a more modern sound with added visual effects. Living Word has expanded to include a Christian school, a chemical dependency treatment facility, and various other ministries. I'm thankful for Lynne Hammond's commitment to prayer and Mac giving up his airfreight business to pastor a church that has changed many lives. Until the Lord returns, I pray Living Word Christian Center continues having a positive influence upon the state of Minnesota and beyond.

This isn't just a church you attend--it's a family that walks beside you through life's victories and struggles. Pastor Jeff has a God-given ability to preach the truth with both conviction and compassion. His messages are practical, biblical, and have challenged me to grow spiritually in ways I never imagined. The location can be a little tricky to get to with the round a bouts but following their signs helps. The church is very modern and clean and there is plenty of room in the sanctuary with stadium seating in the back if you'd prefer that. They have a contemporary and traditional services on Sunday at 9am and 10:30 which is family friendly. They have kids Wednesday night workship for kids called KWAM. They have 3 different service times for Christmas Eve workship that are family friendly at 3 and 4pm and then a candlelight at 9pm. Definitely recommend checking them out.
