The specials are also great and well above the standard you might expect from such a small hamlet (two words - seafood platter!), and there's always a choice of 3 or 4 veggie dishes on the board too. Prices are pretty reasonable and certainly don't strain the wallet too much given the size of the portions. Beers are a more standard Belhaven range, but they do always have one speciality real ale on hand pump. Worth booking at weekends as they can get pretty busy.

Everything for a Scottish breakfast was available along with the typical breads, pastries, cereals, etc. porridge was made to order and came with a side of fruit and honey. The gym was compact and a water bottle refill located there. A microwave was located near the front desk if needed. Eventhough it was a drive from downtown Inverness the Courtyard was more convenient for our next day plans of seeing Fort George and Culloden Battlefield.

We took a pass on the breakfast because it didn't look good the place wasn't anywhere Scenic it was you know it was a waste of time. Did like having air conditioning and a sheet which are standard in America hotels but not in Europe for some reason? Anyway I made a stupid mistake and left my SmartWatch in the hotel they found it but didn't call us. So we were 6 hours away when we gave up looking for it and called around and found it at the hotel. Well kudos to them for their honesty of turning the watch in but that's where the Applause stops they were very unhelpful and unwilling to do anything to get it back to us. We offered them $100 to send it to us but they refused to do anything and we had to hire a private company to go there to pick it up and then send it to us. I thought that was very poor customer service. Especially since my husband was supposedly a valued member of their travel Rewards. It just added a lot of hassle and I just thought it was poor customer service. Of course the blame is on me for leaving my watch but I definitely wouldn't go there again or recommend them unless you need to be close to an airport.

You will always pay more when asking for a double room for single occupancy, but sometimes there can be good deals. The driveway to the hotel and the entrance itself are amazing to look at. You feel like you are entering the world of the privileged during the time of Queen Victoria. Strathpepper is an old Victorian Spa town and has been a gathering point for many noble families and the rich. Nowadays its only a shell of its former selve. But still, its worth the visit and I assume that Ben Wyvis Hotel was once one of its kind. Nowadays it needs a complete make over. Having said this, people return to this place, because of its Victorian charm. I felt the carpet in the public area needs replacing, the rooms some decorating (especially the bathrooms) and the ceilings a lot of paint to cover up the cracks. As you are in the middle of nowhere its a good idea to eat in the hotel. I was informed at the reception that their restaurant is fully booked in the evening, but when I turned up at my given time, the dining hall was half empty. I found out that they were understaffed and people off sick. I ordered a three course dinner and must confess that the quality was quite good and I would definitely go back just to dine there. Afterwards you could retreat to the lounge and enjoy a tea or coffee. I met some people in the hotel, such it was a very pleasant evening to remember. When I had ordered a gin tonic the staff could not find certain ingredients and it took them a long time to make me the drink, especially because I was their only customer in the lounge. Having said this, I got it for free. How kind :-) My room and bathroom were old fashioned and the fire doors closing and opening during the night totally interrupted my sleep. The TV was ancient. At least it was quiet in my room on occasion and I needed not to worry about ghosts, or did I ? :-) Would I go back? Yes maybe, but then I would try to get a room in the front building with awesome views towards Ben Wyvis.

There, the Ben Wyvis offers lots of rooms, a quick food service operation and photogenic main rooms and grounds. That's why it's a favorite of motorcoach tours. Behind the classic exterior it's less satisfying. The rooms need investment. Fixtures are old, windows have no screens and TVs are tiny. There's no concierge and services in general are lacking. If you want breakfast, dinner and a room, it's okay. A grand hotel it's not.

Not bad at all given that the breakfast was lovely and consisted of a full cooked breakfast and unlimited cereal, fruit, juice and porridge. The rooms were a bit dated with a sink in the room too which was pretty random, but the views were excellent and the hotel nice and quiet. Nairn itself is an interesting place, there's a mix of local pubs, wine bars and then this place which stands out for its excellent beer selection and friendly staff.

The building "Castle Esque" motif with large stately interior, echoing a time gone by. The staff friendly and accommodating. Our dinner was as Scottish should be elegantly simple. After dinner a sunset stroll past the cattle slowly grazing on the front grounds and neighboring hounds freely wandering and greeting guests. Our room was simple offering a warm home style. I could have sat in one of the upholstered arm chairs in the bright sunlight and typed what I'm typing now. Probably with a wee bit more wonder and romance woven in me wording. The hotel situated on stunning open grounds, which is a just mere slice of stately land that it once beheld. Stories of celebrity and dignitary were impressive. My favorite, Charlie Chaplain would spend quiet summers here away from celebrity fanfare. If you're a lucky guest to have his own room, you'll only know by seeing his Bowler hung on a peg in the room.

Central Inverness is not that big so it was easy enough to walk to and from this hotel which is located on the edge of the downtown area...not quite as convenient as the hotels right in the middle of the town center, but 6-10 minutes walk and you're there and back. The bonus there is it's much quieter than the direct center of town. It feels new or at least recently renovated...but a basic modern hotel...not boutique or luxury. All the staff we interacted with were nice. Our room was fairly small but, clean and comfortable 9and again modern feeling), and it had a nice view of the river right outside the window. Breakfast was okay...there's ample to choose from from the continental buffet, plus a super-automatic espresso machine to quickly get whatever drink you wanted. Plus you could order from the prepared foods menu. The continental had a large honeycomb straight from a nearby bee farm that you could scoop a chunk out for whatever you needed. I hadn't seen anything like that at any other hotel and thought that was cool and unique. 8-10 minutes walk to the bus or train station which was convenient enough for us as we were using Inverness as a base for day trips in the region. (Train to Speyside one day for whiskey distillery visits, bus into the Loch Ness area for a cruise, Urquhart Castle, and coos, and a cab from the hotel directly to Culloden and Clava Cairns.) The rest of our trip we stayed at more upscale boutique hotels and we consciously wanted to not spend as much on this part of the trip...so we were happy with our choice and thought it was a good base for exploring Inverness and the region in general.
