Both the Z-Lot and the Belt Alley contain a wide range of artwork, from artists around the globe. A lot of it is quite edgy,fun and colorful. This is one of those unusual places I enjoy visiting in cities. The Belt Alley also has an outdoor bar called the Skip. The Z-Garage has artwork on all it's floors and you don't have to park there to see it. The view from the top of this parking lot is awesome. You get an amazing view for free. You can see many city sites from here. It is a must see point for great pictures. On a Sunday evening, this garage is reasonably priced at $10. We were able to park, and walk all the levels to see the murals. The garage is split, and you can cross over between levels 4-10. The view from the top is pretty great, too.

It was completed in 1929 during the city's automotive boom. It is also often referred to as the Cathedral of Finance. It's a breathtaking Art Deco design inside and out. Make sure to take time to appreciate the detail, that makes it so special. The bold colors, the amazing tile work, and vaulted lobby are stunning. It history and beauty makes it so much more than "office building". We lucked out and found street parking but would have paid for a garage. It is absolutely worth stepping inside to look around. The building itself is beautiful and just a short stumble from the Sheds in Eastern Market. My favorite night of all my experiences at RBHOA was the Secret Walls live mural competition. It was an amazing night where (4) teams of 3-4 artists painted murals to be judged at the conclusion of the night by the crowd. Amazing to see the artists at work. Being that the building and events are sponsored by Red Bull there is always all you can drink Vodka Redbulls (plus a few other selections, miller light, gin & tonic, etc.) Great experience every visit. This is definitely a spot I like to introduce slowly to friends from outside of the city.

Red Bull HoA selects resident artists that rotate…read morethrough the studio, where they focus on producing what they love and then displaying it to the public on Saturdays during the Eastern Market. The building is basically a gentrified warehouse and the first floor is where the residents work. If you go on a Saturday, you can hang out with the resident artists and talk with them as they paint, etc. After that, head downstairs to the gallery. There, completed works are displayed next to a tiny number on a thumb tack that you can use to look up each work's price if you are interested. You can browse the whole gallery in about ten minutes, but the art in invariably outstanding and I highly recommend it. It draws from a lot of College of Creative Studies talent in Detroit, and a lot of the art has contemporary and urban undertones. I've heard that they also throw parties about once a month. I can't go to the one in July, but will update this review as soon as I'm able to attend! Stop by the Red Bull House of Art whenever you are in the Eastern Market!

It's a venue for small to medium sized special events. It's across the street from the art museum so it's easy to amble over and check out. When I stopped by they were renovating, it's over 110 years old so this sort of thing must happen every now and then. Well worth the voluntary donation even though it was mostly closed off. Depending on your vision, you might want to bring binoculars to look at the higher parts of the exterior architecture and be careful if you are backpedaling to get a better view. Thank you to the motorist who didn't run me over by the way, when I backed into the street, Mr. Magoo style.

The Fisher Building was completed in 1928 honored with a silver medal in architecture in 1929 by…read morethe Architecture League of New York. Currently, it's an office building with a theater showing Broadway quality shows, and some shops and restaurants on the ground floor. One of the most recognizable sights on Detroit's skyline, the building is also known as "The Golden Tower." The original gold-leaf tiles on the tower were covered with asphalt during WWII for fear of bombing. Following the war the damaged gold tiles were replaced with green terra cotta tiles that are illuminated gold at night.

Detroit. #hamilton I have been planning this moment since I'd been informed that Hamilton was coming back in March -- and I don't think I fully understood the depths of my devotion to making it happen until I saw my mother's face. She had surgery just days before. She couldn't clap too hard. None of that stopped her from being completely, uncontainable, childlike giddy. It is not often that adult children get to see their parents that way -- eyes dancing, joy uncontained. I got to see it Sunday night. The cast -- predominantly Black and brilliant. Culturally, that matters deeply to me and my former Black Panther mother. I want to be clear, however: everyone on that stage gave everything. The dancers. The vocals. The lighting. The set. Collective excellence. That's what live performance does -- it doesn't let you just watch. It makes you witness. And then there's the #FisherBuilding itself. I love theatres. I see grand architecture as art. Every time I enter a building -- big or small -- I stop at the door and take it all in. The Fisher is what I imagine true opulence looks like: 40 kinds of marble, crystal and bronze, green terra cotta tiles, light that gives the whole space a warm, illuminated gold effect -- earning its name as "Detroit's largest art object." The staff moved with the same coordinated energy as the performers. Dennis (Head Usher and my old Detroit Opera House colleague) greeted me with a big hug and put Mommie in her wheelchair with care, walking her straight to dashing security -- who told her she looked like royalty -- an African Queen. Raul was assigned to her for the entire night and showed up like family. The bartenders argued -- warmly, playfully -- over who got to take care of her. And I cannot even discuss all of the examples of kindness from the patrons to me and each other, because this post will be longer than it already is. The usher at the door walked me through my QR code, and managed that entire line with authority and warmth. I told my sisters -- watching our mother's face glow that night, opened something in me I cannot name. I am addicted now. Addicted to chasing that look on their faces. For as long as I have breath and means, I will keep finding ways to put you all in rooms that make your eyes dance. Some nights just settle into you differently. This is one of them. Thank you, Fisher Theatre & Fisher Building for giving me one of those nights.
