But, we needed an overnight stay in the Lake District and took the chance of another Travelodge. We arrived with great trepidation. What a shock. The receptionist was cheerful and friendly. Booking in was carried out swiftly and we were given a room in an annexe of about 24 rooms. First impressions of walking in were of the cleanliness and brightness. The room was immaculate with a large comfy bed, plenty of room. The bathroom was clean, bright and with plenty of towels. Next door was a Little Chef for breakfast. A wonderful hotel and our ideas of Travelodge have changed.

Accommodation is of the usual good standard that you would expect, and at least there's a choice of two eateries adjacent to it - although I suspect they actually share the same staff and cooking facilities. They're in the business of arranging walking/hiking tours and their web site is fun to use in helping you whittle down your options. Once you decide on the number of days you wish to hike and the type of terrain you wish to hike in, Mickledore's web site will show you your options. When you have questions, their staff will quickly respond via email or phone. When you've settled on a hike and made a down payment to Mickledore they'll make your arrangements which include lodging and luggage transport along your hiking route. As your travel date approaches and you make your final payment, Mickledore will send you the details of your trip: dates, lodging, maps, luggage tags, and meals when applicable. Depending on where you've chosen to hike you could possibly handle all of this on your own but Mickledore takes you out of the planning business and sometimes that's worth paying for. To say that this hiking tour was one of my best travel experiences ever isn't an understatement. This rubs off on my feelings about Mickledore in a positive way. The services they provided on this particular trip weren't perfect but I so enjoyed my trip that I'd consider using them again in the future. Here's the details: * Mickledore booked 6 nights of lodging in 5 different locations. Of those, 3 were great or good, 1 was just okay, and 1 was bad. I provided post-trip feedback to Mickledore, as they requested. The route I chose is not as traveled as some of the more popular trails; for this reason I think Mickledore may not have had great data on some of the places they booked me into. * Each morning, your luggage must be downstairs and ready for transport by 8:30 a.m. Each afternoon, when checking in at a new place of lodging, my luggage was waiting. This part went off without a hitch. * In the UK, each place of lodging included a full English breakfast. In 2 places Mickledore had arranged for bag lunches to be included as well. I would not want the bag lunches again. I was hiking through areas that were easy to find food and drink and it is that I prefer. * Mickledore provided a book (outlining the details of the trail), a water-safe map of the trail, printed pages of places to eat/public restrooms/emergency service info and the like. They also have an app on which you can see much of your trip info. The trail I hiked was easy to follow and I'm good at searching out my preferred dining options. The only part of this that I found useful (and mostly just because it was interesting) was the map. * Although they don't verify it, Mickledore requires that travelers get trip insurance. I did and thankfully had no need to use it. Not including trip insurance, the services Mickledore provided for this trip (including the 6 nights of lodging and the luggage transport plus everything else mentioned) ran $967 per person which wasn't cheap but also wasn't at all unreasonable. Mickeldore Travel isn't the only company specializing in organizing self-guided walking tours but in this space, the offerings are similar. If I were planning another trip like this I'd again consider using them.

And what a cute town it sits in as well…read more My family and I were staying in the Lake District for a weekend getaway recently, and we decided to wonder into Coniston for the day. It was a lovely day and the patio outside of Yewdale was full of people, looking very inviting! It was so full in fact that we ended up being seated inside, which was not a problem. For international travelers like myself, note that you don't have a server come to your table, but instead you head up to the bar to put in food and drink orders. A few brews for the guys, a glass of wine for my mom-in-law, and a gin spritzer cocktail for me all went over well! As for the food: I opted for the sweet potato and chickpea curry and wow was it flavorful! Full of spices, but not too spicy. It came with mango chutney (my fave), a coconut yogurt of sorts, and plenty of rice. A filling dish for sure. I also had a bite (or three) of my husband's margarita pizza. It was tasty and the crust was perfection. Not surprising seeing as they have a big wood-fired oven that the pizzas are made in. The fish n chips were rated top notch by my in-laws as well. We were appreciative of the high chair for my son, the friendly staff, and the fact that this place is dog-friendly because there were plenty of cute pups around! First time trying the Gammon Steak - I thought the Hawaiians did ham and pineapple first but clearly not! The ham steak is covered in a warm pineapple chutney, a bit sugary, really enjoyed the fresh-tasting chips. A really cool pub with quality food and style. Better for a sit-down dinner than for slamming pints.

Would've been 5 but the wasps ruined it!…read more Sounds a bit silly doesn't it but the wasps were literally the only bad point about our visit to Beech Hill Hotel! This was the first stop of my birthday weekend planned by my girlfriend and we were here for the afternoon tea. The offerings of the tea itself were great, a nice selection of sandwiches, scones and cakes all with a huge pot of English tea! Now, the views - they are spectacular and you probably can't beat these views to sit and enjoy a drink on the balcony! We had a good 30 minutes outside but then the wasps attacked and we had to go back in to sit on the extremely comfy sofas! I can't speak for the hotel itself in regards to rooms - but for a traditional, enjoyable and good value afternoon tea - Beech Hill is a good bet!
