I didn't even rate some of those courses as 5 Stars for various reasons whether it be the price, staff, or course conditions. Indian Springs is a wonderful course in southern Illinois that presents unexpected challenges and forces a player to use all 14 clubs in their bag. It isn't a 5 Star Course based on Bent Grass, hosting a PGA event or towering fairway bunkers but rather due to the prices, owners, and use of the terrain implemented into their design. This is a wonderful course that has various leagues, hosts tournaments, and treats its guests like friends. Most importantly (to me) is the fact that the owners are beyond friendly and extremely hospitable. I love visiting Indian Springs because she makes me feel like family and is genuinely excited to see me and always thanks me for my Military Service. I won't be playing here for a few years as I move to England but I like forward to coming back next time I'm in Southern Illinois visiting.

Greens were in very good shape considering how they are in the rest of the area right now. Not too many ball marks or burnt up areas. Fairways were in decent shape, and the rough was pretty straightforward to play out of, played very fair all around. Layout-wise, the front 9 benefit a longer hitter, lots of space to go hard with driver. Groves of trees separate most of the fairways from each other, so be prepared to play some low safety shots if you're a little wild off the tee. The back 9, however, I didn't really care for. There's two hard left doglegs that just seemed a little cutesy, they were easy to play with an iron off the tee, I just thought the design was lame on the first hole with it, and then the second was enough to annoy me into ranting about it. Assume it's due to a lack of space on the back side, which happens, I understand, just wasn't my cup of tea. Other than that, a pleasant little course. May be back if I can snag another cheap tee time. As an added benefit, looked like they had a nice big driving range, and more than enough space to warm up on the practice green. Can't attest to the food and beverage situation in the clubhouse, but assume it's on the same level as any other course around.

I would imagine that the mold formed on the bun due to the long wait time it took for our service. The waiter didn't offer is a discount for the poor food, however, he did give us an apology, so they get 2 stars.

Fairways are fine, but the rough is always FAR too long. The U.S. Golf Association states "roughs are maintained between 1.0 to 1.25 inches in summer", but at this course we're talking at least 4 inches, and that's the height at which they mow them, not after days of growth. Several times they've just finished mowing a section we're hitting into, and if the ball strays into the rough it can be super hard to find. Other courses in the area don't have this issue. Please set those decks lower!

The scenery is great also. Last year they added 9 holes to make it 18. We all know how hot and bad last year was. Those added holes have come back well for being brand new in a hot drought year. This course has a lot of potential. I do think it plays harder than its slope rating and that makes it a good challenge. I'm not sure about weddings here, but the golfing is fun.

The course was in somewhat rough shape , but had only been opened for a couple of weeks. We would fully expect that the fairways would fill in nicely as Spring progresses. Course had very large greens which suited our style of play quite well. The course had a nice layout with many of the holes quite scenic. Lots of elevation changes which added to the golfing challenges. The counter person, Bill, was quite personable and accommodating. We all look forward to a return visit.
