I have a confession to make...I lied...about being an art fan…read more There's no way I can consider myself a connoisseur of the Miami Art Scene and not have stepped foot inside Dorsch Gallery until tonight! I stopped in tonight for the Bubble Art exhibit I heard on the talk thread, and went beyond the main entry hall. The raw concrete floor, the exposed masonry block work, the nooks, the crannies, the turns just beg for artistic creation. The exhibits tonight ranged from a cot made out of bank deposit bags - perfectly symbolic of the recession - to fluorescent colorful "stacks" and even a Great Pair of Legs on the floor. The coup d'grace is the outside patio where an local band was playing. It is an architectural hodgepodge of a patio slab, grass, and pavers. The patio roof itself is another marvel with two different types of wood framing. Of course, there was the requisite comp bar (which unfortunately I passed on tonight) and also a little picnic table outside. The acoustics weren't that great, but we're not a hoity toity concert hall but at a cool end-of-summer backyard party!

I did enjoy the performance art from the opera singers, but I just didn't get the art. Hmph. The layout was acceptable. I honestly wouldn't have even noticed that it was a gallery because from the outside it looked like a garage. I barely recognized it as I walked past later in the evening after they were closed. Bottom Line: Give it a shot and see if you like the art, but I wasn't impressed.

We were welcomed in by Mr. Work the young scientist cum artist cum entrepreneur and the one man show for Mark Diamond a well known lenticular artist who has made Miami his home. The space is a Work in progress but he and his partner are off to a good start banking on this quaint dead-end street. It is located off the beaten path of the already crowded, indeed saturated, graffiti ridden walls, sidewalks, fences, hell stand still for more than a minute you could get tagged in this hood. Across from La Tropical, and a stone throw from Oasis they complete the trinity of a damn good time. Love their ideas and with Work at the helm, this renaissance man just may turn Wynwood back to its glory days wheee people came to this area for the art.

There's something about standing in front of it that instantly slows everything down. The sun poring through the leaves. The simplicity, the balance, the silence it creates, it almost feels like the artwork is inviting you to pause for a moment. I found myself just staring at it, letting the calm and tranquility take over. The gallery itself is beautifully curated, with a clean and thoughtful layout that lets each piece breathe. Just the tip toe noise on the wooden floor makes me chill every time I walk through it. It's the kind of place where you don't rush; you wander, reflect, and connect with the art in your own way. It is free to access and all the personnel is nice and attentive. I believe the first time I came across this Peter Tunney art gallery was during Art Basel a few…read moreyears ago... that first visit, to be frank, sucked. The gallery is a warehouse/garage door space within Wynwood Walls and upon stepping in, the art was unique and inspiring but the smell of cigarettes overwhelmed; plus the smell of chemicals... perhaps it was to prep the space to be ready for that years Art Basel or grand opening but it really stuck with me. Luckily, the space no longer wreaks of cigarettes.... and today it's nice to just step in and take in the art and all the accompanying decor. The most prominent art form are aphorisms and proverbs in large, oversized frames does in what appears to be similar to paper mâché with newspapers; some of the art pieces include various artifacts/knick knacks along the bottom of the interior of the frames (such as vintage cameras).

located on fiu's campus. not just located on fiu's campus... the sculpture garden IS fiu's campus…read more it covers the entire campus. it's one of the best private sculpture collections and mr. margulies donated on long-term loan to fiu. the first time i went was for an art history class i was taking. i had to write a paper on the piece of my choosing. i wasn't really expecting too much... but i have to admit, i was truly blown away. the campus is huge and everywhere you look there is these gigantic modern sculptures. and for those wondering... i ended up picking this big rotating like circle thingy (see how much i remember from college) just outside the museums doors. admission is free. and there's self-guided tours using the info map you can pick up in the museum. i think they also have audio tours as well. i've gone back once or twice since... and it's still as impressive.

This was one of my favorites galleries during Art Basel, but it was empty other than a few people…read morescrambling around to rearrange a tattoo exhibit that was not open yet. Granted it was off the beaten path, but still no one was there (surprising because we enjoyed what we saw). One look at the colorful art and unusual mediums used and we were sold. My typical artistic tastes don't relate much with these modern designs and unique subject matters, but I have to admit I liked it. Even though some of the art was a bit animated and cartoon like, I was certainly able to admire the artistic talent here (something I had trouble doing at some of the bigger-name galleries where I just did not get it regarding some of the art (like popped balloons on a chrome fence or various plastic bottles filled with beach sand or the ever popular testicles in a bottle). Throughout the day Dec 2 (Friday), artists that were being featured at the gallery were painting murals on 10 nearby buildings including one right next door. Interestingly enough the mural next door was being done by the artist whose work I was impressed with at the gallery (I believe his name was Pixel Pancho). In the gallery his work had a couple pieces that looked like classic superhero characters but in robotic form (I know it doesn't sound like true art, but it was good stuff); then walk out the door and there is this huge mural being done of the same style. I also very much liked work done by an artist Aaron Martin, who did paintings of pandas but they looked angry and full of emotions. We were talking to one of the artists that were scrambling around to set up that closed section, he invited us back for an event that takes "drawn art" and "tattooing" as permanent art on interested parties. It was supposed to be taking place throughout Art Basel but it wasn't ready as of the time I was there on Friday afternoon. The Aleloops 10 custom painted Mini Cooper's were scheduled to make an appearance here Friday night. In actuality, I came to Art Whino specifically for the Aleloops Coopers but was a bit too early. Though I ended up seeing them a couple hours later at Red Dot.
