Extremely LONG but way overdue review. Let me start with…read morethis: if you are a Black woman or any student who expects to be treated with basic respect, stay far away from CAL ACE. This school is a disgrace and should be shut down. The five-star reviews you see? Many of them are pressured out of students while they're still in class, face to face with staff. I personally witnessed this. Several of my classmates told me privately that they had negative experiences too--but were too scared to speak out publicly because of retaliation or fear they wouldn't pass. This review isn't just mine--it reflects what many of us went through and whispered about behind closed doors. I attended in July/August 2024, and from the moment I walked in, I had doubts. The school is inside a shopping plaza with a fish market, and the environment is beyond unsanitary. Bathrooms were filthy--cockroaches, dried feces on the floor and toilet, overflowing trash DAILY. The classroom was crowded, disorganized, and the curriculum had tons of spelling and grammar errors. Yet they charge nearly $2,000 per student. It's a money grab, plain and simple. But what really broke me was the way I was treated by the staff. Marilyn, one of the owners, was cold, dismissive, and clearly had a chip on her shoulder. She refused to answer my questions, lied about not having a printer when I needed to reprint a background check form, and acted like I was a burden anytime I needed basic help. I still tried to push through because I was on a strict deadline to start nursing school. Then came the incident that pushed me to the edge. We were asked to review our attendance, and I noticed multiple errors. I went in person to clarify. Instead of asking me a single question, Marilyn immediately accused me of leaving clinicals early. I was stunned. I showed timestamped proof from my Clipper card showing my exact travel times, and she still repeated the accusation over and over. Then she brought in Dino, the instructor, who flat-out lied and said I had left early. They ganged up on me. A random woman in the office also inserted herself into the conversation because my voice was raised--which, yes, it was, because I was being falsely accused of something that could cost me my nursing future 10 plus times (not an exaggeration). I was shaking. I had done nothing wrong. I found my signed attendance sheet from the day in question after 30 minutes of digging. It proved I was present. Did I get an apology? No. Marilyn tried to claim it was a different day. I shut that down too. It was disgusting and clearly racial. The tone, the disbelief, the ganging up--it wasn't just a mistake, it was a targeted attack on my character. Cliff, the owner, came in "to help" but was immediately accusatory, but eventually just agreed. He updated my hours online, but the emotional harm was already done. A few days later, I was called into the office again. I assumed they were finally going to apologize. Instead, they told me they were "concerned about me becoming a nurse." The audacity. The falsely accused me of something with zero evidence. Marilyn didn't even know what the word "accusing" meant. I wish I was joking. I had to explain it to her. She eventually gave me an apology, but it was insincere and too late. That moment stuck with me--being made to feel like I did something wrong for simply defending myself. On top of that, Cliff frequently made inappropriate comments during class. One student--who was only 17--said her mom (a former student) warned her to stay away from him. He made us all uncomfortable. During our CNA test review, I couldn't remember one of the skills, and in front of the whole class, he told me my response was "pathetic." Not only was it unprofessional and humiliating, but again, I was balancing multiple jobs and college courses while still showing up and doing the work. He later apologized when the room cleared, but it was clear who he respected and who he didn't. The only decent instructor in the entire program was a kind black man whose name I sadly forgot. He was respectful and actually listened. BOTTOM LINE: CAL ACE does not care about your education, your dignity, or your future. They care about your tuition and keeping their shady operation running. If you have another option--take it. This place needs to be investigated, restructured, or shut down. No one should have to experience what I did just to become a CNA. Update: CAL ACE has since responded--but instead of taking accountability, they doubled down and claimed I succeeded "with their support." Let me be clear: I succeeded in spite of this school, not because of it. They falsely accused me, publicly humiliated me, and failed to take responsibility even after I proved I was telling the truth. They are being reported currently. The parking lot was mostly empty. No problems finding a parking space, you pretty much have your choice! The campus was very quiet. It is a ghost town. You almost expect to see tumbleweed. There were no other people walking around the place. It was eerie. Didn't see much activity in any of the buildings we entered. There was only one building where we saw a small class in session. That was it. Perhaps everyone is taking classes online? Or perhaps most of the classes are in the evenings? We stopped by in the afternoon. We were surprised to find very modern buildings on campus. It actually looks very nice! Just need to populate it with some people. Loved the library. They had lots of tables, plus some quiet rooms for study or collaboration. There were plenty of outlets & USB connections at each table. If only the Sunnyvale Public Library were so well equipped. After receiving my CNA license here, I was able to get a job at a large hospital in the Silicon Valley as a PCT in the same year. I later became an ED tech for the same organization. I continued my education / prerequisites for nursing school while working as a tech and later got accepted into a nursing school in San Jose. This allowed me to work while in Nursing school, and complete the program. My experience was great at this school. Yes, you had to study a bit on your own. And yes, some things may have been outdated, but this school allowed me to get certified while I continued to work my 8-5. It ultimately helped me kickstart my nursing career. My path to becoming a nurse would have been significantly different if this program was not available to me. Other programs took way too long or did not fit with my work schedule. The head administrator is a retired LVN, and her husband also works as part of administration. There are no online portals or true credentials you get as a student. The only file you have is a manila folder with the proper school forms and whatnot. During my short time there, the head administrator never knew where she placed our files, or was forgetful and always had trouble remembering or doing something. Asking for help from her was almost pointless because she most likely didn't know the answer. Yet, she is quick to collect money and almost always reminds her students to pay on time. Although this school is more affordable compared to other CNA programs in the Bay Area, you do get a sense that they are money hungry for their business. For instance, I paid a certain amount for tuition, but when overhearing admin talk on the phone to a possible student, she told them it was $200 more than what the current class is paying. Not sure how they determine their prices, but this is why it is important for students to do their research. Getting a refund was almost hard too. To be honest I don't think I was refunded the proper amount, but hey I guess they need the money more than I do. Due to Covid, classes were still held in person but the student average was about 12 students. Luckily, there was another LVN who is an instructor for the course. Instructor Akua is super friendly, passionate about his work, and is a great teacher. This rating is more for him, since he actually teaches and takes over majority of the time. I learned a lot from him during my 2 weeks there, and he was even sad to see me leave. If anything I wish admin would treat him better too. He was promised a laptop for his lectures but still hasn't received one. He is hardworking and practically has no days off since he teaches the weekend and some evening classes too. This school is what you make of it, so as long as you pay attention and read the material, you have high chances of passing. My bff took the evening class and he shared his experience but I kept procrastinating. Finally my sister and bae pushed me to my limit because I've got nothing to lose. My employer will reimburse me a certain amount back for the tuition which I could not pass up. Second, having an additional cert will open up more doors in the medical field for me. As much as I hate blood, I stick children and teens every day. Lol... I chose the weekend class which is 5 Saturdays from 8am to 4:30 pm. Just remember you aren't too old to go back to school to make that dream of yours come true. My first day was absolute amazing. Our teacher was amazing. Her name is Lindsey Kline and she is full of positive real spirit, humor, honesty and direct. Lindsey works at a prison and her skin is thick. She is there for you every step of the way. Lindsey provides the guidance and support during Q&A and your blood draws. She's very responsive. I've completed my class yesterday and I know I will miss attending class. We had an awesome group of people that were always joking around, laughing and helping each other make our goals. Lindsey makes you feel comfortable and I loved her style of teaching. There aren't no shortcuts. It may seem like a short time of learning to get certified but she had given us all the knowledge we need and carry us through to prep for our NHA exam.

You get some lecture time and it's hands-on from there. The instructors are great and very good at what they do in and out of the classroom. The tuition you pay is worth every penny! You may be nervous to actually stick a needle in someone but after your first successful stick it gets easier from there as your confidence sky rockets! Student services is great and they're fast with their responses and they are very accommodating. I highly recommend this school if you're going into phlebotomy, EMS, PA school, Nursing school or jobs that require this skill. In 5 days I got 65 successful sticks in via straight needles, butterfly needles and capillary punctures! Great program for anyone!
