A very warm and romantic eatery with just the right lighting and ambience that fits the city. The menu was great. We started with the Beetroot salad with goat cheese and apple. You could taste the apple and cheese instantly which in turn made the beets taste sweet and tart! It was a genius combination! There was nothing left when we finished...our main course were both equally as good. I had the risotto with Parmesan cheese and mushrooms. Cooked to perfection. My spouse had the grilled swordfish with green asparagus and sals! The fish was very fresh the asparagus was outstanding! Even though we were totally bursting at the seams of our pants we went for dessert! Why not? I had the Scroppino of lemon sorbet with champagne and vodka! Drop me on the floor great. My spouse had Pavlova with red fruit and whipped cream. After dinner we sat and watched the city turn from afternoon into night. It was a wonderful meal in a very inviting setting. We found the cafe and followed the sign to the side door that indicated the dining room. The top floor was closed for a private event but they sat us at a lovely table in a tight corner. It fit us just fine. The place has tons of character. A young lady took our order but didn't understand a couple things and the timing and ordering of our food wad screwed up. When the manager realized our friend was sitting there with a salad while the rest of us were waiting for our food, he told the kitchen to fire our plates. We had a burger and scallops coming. At least our friend's food wasn't going to get cold. When our food arrived, mine was baked chicken. I ordered what said 'scallops' in their English menu. The manager came over and explained that there was a misprint on the English line of the menu and they haven't had it fixed and the waitress didn't know but he promised the chicken was good. We were pressed for time at this point. We had plenty of time when we arrived but since the waitress was waiting for us to eat my friend's salad as an appetizer before telling the kitchen make our food, the time was burned by the time our food finally arrived. The worst part was they don't do take away in Amsterdam, apparently. I had to admit it smelled divine. I shook the manager's hand and thanked him before I dug in. This is probably the best chicken dish I've ever had. Seriously. It was so perfect. Juicy, perfectly cooked, crispy skin, and flavor throughout. The Pommes friets were perfect too. She also forgot to bring the Jenever I ordered. Also, she would not accept our credit card; cash only. In total we were there from 1:50 to 3:40 on a Monday in July -- almost two hours. (I know because I took photos at the start and end of the visit). We weren't particularly in a rush, but then again we didn't want to spend almost two hours for lunch. The mains were three large pieces of filet of sole and a perfect medium rare duck breast. Both were delicious and good sized portions. We also shared a side of crispy fries which were also very good. Service from the staff at Vlaming was exceptional. Friendly and gave very good advice about the wine and food choices. Had a nice time talking to another family sitting next to us, also from California. Vlaming was an excellent restaurant choice for our first night in Amsterdam.
