Stopped by around 7pm and the place was pretty much empty. My friend and I both ordered the moroccan chicken stew with potatoes and carrots and it came out in about 10-15 minutes. Chicken was moist and not overcooked. Potatoes and carrots were light and mushy. The overall dish was very lightly salted and pretty effortless to consume since everything was so soft. This a solid restaurant that has a decent lunch menu. We came in during Saturday for lunch and the place was completely empty. - Spare ribs (lunch menu) : For 9 euros, you get a LOT of food for the money. The meat was falling off the bone, but the meat was only just decent. It wasn't packed with flavor like what I had at Cafe Klos. Also, this place serves it with Hollandaise sauce and not BBQ sauce, which I believe is non-existent in the Netherlands. - Mussels : While the broth was tasty and the mussels were cleaned correctly, the mussels were WAY over cooked. Tear. We wanted to try the rib-eye steak as it looked delicious from all the yelp photos but sadly, they were out. 3 stars. read more

Lovely local eatery, daily specials and menu, besides a small standard menu. Freshly prepared food, excellent flavours. We had for starters mussels and haring tartare, both lovely and generous portions. For mains the daily special Nasi Goreng and a Ribeye. Again, great flavours. For dessert the pearsorbet with vodka (ok, not as great as I had hoped), and an Irish Coffee (highly recommended!). Staff are friendly and efficient. Van Beeren is a great neighborhood find with reasonable prices. It's bustling and cozy inside, service is attentive, and they have really good bread. We ordered the: ribs, ceviche, mozzarella/arugula/zucchini salad, and chocolate pie with pear sorbet. The portions on the ribs, which were juicy and well seasoned, were HUGE, so they're great for sharing. I wasn't a fan of the ceviche and wouldn't order it again, mainly because the fish had a just-defrosted taste. However, I enjoyed the mozzarella, arugula, and zucchini salad, which was quite fresh and tasty. I didn't get to try their Irish coffee because it was getting late and I wanted to be able to get to bed at a decent hour, but van Beeren makes rum whipped cream in-house, and it is quite yummy. We saw the waitress topping off some coffees at the bar, and she let us taste some in a little glass. For dessert, we had the chocolate pie with pear sorbet. The sorbet had little chunks of pear, and was really refreshing with the pie. Our meal, with a bottle of red wine, came out to around 65 euros, but one could eat well for 15. All in all, definitely worth coming back to. read more

As a Northwest Airlines A-330 Captain, this became my favorite AMS layover restaurant, and I've brought many other crew members here over the years. My wife still flies as a Delta Purser, and in late September, 2018 I accompanied her on a layover there to meet with friends who were on their way to Africa for a Safari. In total there were easily a dozen of us, and I'd made a reservation for a table in the courtyard behind the restaurant--open late Spring thru early Fall. It's delightful. First and foremost understand that dining in Europe is often an affair encompassing several hours, and if you're expecting to walk in, order, dine and leave in 30-45 minutes make sure you're eating in a fast food establishment. Further, most European restaurants include service in their prices automatically, which explains the relatively high cost of dining. While diners still tip, servers aren't reliant on the generosity of their customers as they are in the U.S. Van Beeren is traditional Dutch fare, and offers many seasonal and daily entrees that reflect both the catch of the day as well as heavier, less exotic cuts of beef, lamb and pork. In addition, they have a well stocked bar and some excellent choices of wine that have made it a neighborhood favorite for years. If you can't get a table, dine at the bar. If you see a couple dining at a large table, you might ask if you can share the table. Don't be surprised if they reply affirmatively. Perhaps my favorite dish is a salad with a dollop of chevre (literally meaning goat in French, it is a soft cheese quite different than feta), which has the slightest bit of honey mixed into it, giving it a delicious flavor unique to this restaurant. I've had several friends accompany me here for their first dining experience who had the rack of lamb, and all of them walked away raving that it was the best they'd ever eaten. I tend to take advantage of the vegetables offered here: Dutch produce is usually grown in local hot houses, picked when it's ripe, always fresh and is by far among the best I ever find. Note that here in the states, it's nearly impossible to find great vegetables like tomatoes, which are picked before they're ripe and gased with CO2 to give them color so they look nice in the grocery store but have no flavor at all. The entrees I personally choose here tend to be steak, ribs, chicken or Dutch variations that include a fried egg or a hearty stew. Many of my friends have ordered salmon, trout, sea bass and pork or lamb, and all of us agree that this place is hard to beat. If you plan to dine immediately before, during or after a holiday you MUST have a reservation. This is a small establishment, and of course when the rear courtyard is not available (which it is not for most of the year) then you can often expect to wait for over an hour for a table. In any event, ask the concierge at your hotel to get you a reservation the night before you plan to dine, or as early in the day as you can to insure availability. Bon appetit!!! read more

This is an excellent gastritis with eclectic dishes and nice wine and beers. It offers 5-6 starters and a similar number of main dishes, but of such variety that there is something for every palate. This gastrointestinal is tucked in at a corner and easy to miss. When we rolled in late one Sunday, only locals were seated. The two young ladies at the bar and the tables were very courteous and efficient. They were a pleasure. The food was of excellent quality and prepared perfectly. The selection of wines was eclectic, and the one we chose was perfect. If you like small cozy restaurants whose clientele is local, whose eclectic food is uniquely and deliciously prepared, and whose staff makes you feel warm and welcome, then this is a place for you. read more

Very nice place on a quiet street to get a delicious meal for an amazing price! I got the Dorado with a lemon sauce, vegetable salad, and potatoes - it was all exquisite. My only complaint would be that the fish still had bones hidden in it. But otherwise the service was great - the waitress didn't drink beer but she kindly inquired about what I should get to the bartender, and the service time wasn't very slow or too fast, either. I'd recommend this for a nicer dinner in Amsterdam. read more

We came here without a reservation on a Friday and the place was full. But they made us really comfortable and gave us drinks while we waited. I and three of my colleagues went in there to have dinner one evening. Three of us ordered the ribs and another ordered the ribeye. We had some wine the wine was good. However it took 90 minutes to get our food and the service was not all that great and the food was less than impressive. The person that had the steak said that if it had been done any more it would be really tough. And he ordered it medium rare. The ribs I understand are a dry rub and will typically be on the dryer side however these ribs came out 90 minutes later and they were very dry and did not taste very well. I will not go back. We had to ask a few times when our food is coming. First impression very bad. Again I will not go back ever! read more
