It is a large station with 16 rail platforms plus four tram platforms and four Stadtbahn platforms. As such, it is Germany's sixth busiest station. The parts that I encountered were step free but I'm not sure if the entire station is such. I was able to roll my spinner suitcase easily from the train, through the station and out to the tram. Signage looked good and easy to read. Lots of food and some retail shopping opportunities here. And in 2021, masks are required throughout the train system. My tip to you is that if you do have an extended layover here, use the luggage storage for your suitcases and step outside. You'll find the tremendous Kölner Dom that is worth photographing and touring. I did not have THAT much time so it was pictures only today. The train station has coffee (including Starbucks, yuck), pastries, lots of restaurants, restrooms, a waiting lounge if your train ticket includes that service, car rentals, ATMs and yes, the Ibis hotel. It's pretty easy to figure out where you need to go and which platform to be on for a train in or out. I think there are 20-30 different platforms. We took a DB (Deutsche Bahn) to and from the Black Forest without any issue. The trains are clean, smooth, and FAST!

There are lots of restaurants, amazing bakeries, and coffee shops to choose from and if you wait inside in the restaurant area, you must make a purchase. Unfortunately, the train schedule is quite different on Sunday and we ended up having to leave the bullet train and get on a smaller train at another platform, carrying luggage up and downstairs. Then we drove a while longer on the train and then had to change trains yet again. We are so grateful to the people who helped us finally get to our hotel!

The ticketing was fairly frustrating, but we'd grown accustomed to that as the electronic ticketing system in Germany, despite there being an English option, is not at all easy to navigate unless you are familiar with it. By this time in our trip we knew what to expect and had built in some time to navigate it and had a vague idea of what we needed so it went fairly well, but with the same little computer hiccups we'd come to expect from the system. The overall train station was, in my opinion, a bit grimy, and well loved, but it had some little cafes that were open early which was a win, and some fairly clean restrooms, though you had to go all the way to the basement for them. Overall, not a lot to report here. It could be modernized, cleaned up a bit, and improved, but it gets the job done.
