Here I found a small but friendly, multilingual, multicultural staff diligently working to prepare and serve food. They were easy to talk to, speaking clearly and patiently taking the order even though several dishes were ordered at different times during the visit. The atmosphere both inside and around the restaurant were wonderful. Outside there was some seating available right on the pathway with views of the boardwalk, beach, and Mediterranean. Inside was additional seating surrounded by family friendly décor emphasizing a casual smokehouse appearance. The restaurant was clean and made good use of the space available. Of course, the food itself was the main event. After trying just a couple dishes I found myself ordering more to taste as much as I could handle, of what they had to offer. I opened with the Nachos, with added guac and sour cream, they had a solid array of flavor and a good crunch even with the toppings. I also had the fried chicken wings, which even while bathed in flavorful buffalo sauce had a fantastic crispy skin beneath that didn't get soggy easily. A few croquettes made for a light mild addition to the appetizer round before moving on to the main course. The Smokey flavor of the pork ribs and beef rib were unmistakable, the meat tender and moist, each came clean off their bones for a true smoked meat experience. The coleslaw and steak-fries made for excellent flavor pairings offering a savory and salty combination to the meat.

The crust was perfect, flaky, but not too heavy or oily. The fillings were even better, so many different interesting flavors to try and seasoned just right. Whimsical was a favorite among us, savory with a hint of sweet and sour from the tomato. Oxtail was rich and tender. Good old ham and cheese was also a favorite for the kids. Moroccan chicken had a such unique blend of spices and a hint of sweet. Yes, I am still thinking about these empanadas.

I grew up eating my aunt's empanadas, and I thought I knew how empanadas should taste. As soon as La Tranquera's empanadas arrived at our table, I forgot every other empanada I have ever eaten. These delicious, light and airy pockets of perfection are the new standard for me. We had one of each flavor, and while they were all incredible, the carne criolla one was my favorite. We also had a delicious bowl of samorejo, a creamy, cold tomato soup with tiny pieces of jamon and delicate slices of hard boiled egg. First time for me, but I am a convert. Great food, friendly service, welcoming atmosphere. All in all, a wonderful experience.

The wine paired very well with the meal, and the lobster was some of the best my wife has ever had (and she has tried quite a bit of lobster from many places). We saw a few things that had our inner health inspectors slightly alarmed, but I think they have mastered only doing slightly unsanitary things around food that has yet to be cooked, because it is the next day and my stomach is still smiling. Nobody here spoke good English, but if you are willing to put some effort into trying or speak a tiny bit of Spanish, you should get along quite well since you can pretty much point to what you want. They stayed open past their official 11:30 closing time to serve every person who started waiting before that time and they never stopped smiling. Great spot!
