I didn't know places like this existed outside of the Mission District. So it was quite a surprise to step into El Chico Produce. If you've ever been to a Latin Produce market/stand you won't find anything that surprises you here. Great value and selection , yes it's not gonna be a pristine as your Whole Foods/Safeway but that's not why you come here. Great to see a venue like this... Like your mom/grandma/abuelita always told you "veggies and fruits are good for you mijo".

    Pork tamle

Picked up 2 pork tamales... really good! It's a little spicy. They ran out of chicken, so I'll definitely come back. 2 tamales for $5.

Decided to stop here after eating at Hard Knox Cafe... the produce look so fresh so picked up some manila mangos and bell peppers. Wonderful variety of produce like guavas, papayas, plantains, greens along with Mexican groceries and a few asian and mediterranean items. Relatively clean, organized and reasonably priced for mom and pop

    A colorful array of fruits!

If you know me, then you'd know that everytime I see fruits and veggies, I get really happy because I'm your fruit-and-veggie type of gal. So when I moved to the neighborhood 1.5 years ago, I was stoked when I realized I live literally 30 steps from this place. I spend a good chunk of my money here, and I have no problem with that because most of the time I don't even have to spend all that much, yet I still get plenty of fruits and veggies. I love the convenience of it...they're open early and close late. I love that they carry a variety of produce and even other grocery items. I don't know what I would do without this place!!

The prices are excellent too -- much of the produce is right in line with Andronico's, but the quality and freshness are consistently better. And the best part? They make their own fresh‑squeezed orange juice. It's honestly the best orange juice money can buy, and absolutely worth the trip even if you're coming from farther away. Balboa Market is a nice neighborhood market that has a little bit of everything. The prices are, of course, higher than in a big supermarket. But I have found better customer service and just plain better treatment in smaller markets, than in chain supermarkets. Why? They want repeat business and positive opinions about the place (like Yelp reviews). When you shop in a neighborhood market, you just buy what you need. While I was paying for my oranges and chocolate chip cookies, the clerk tried to sell me ice cream. I told him it's around 57*F and drizzling outside. He said eating ice cream might make you feel warmer. Then we had an amusing discussion about San Francisco weather. Maybe 57*F is balmy for the "Avenues" because people were outside eating dinner in parklets. Anyway, Balboa Produce Market is a nice neighborhood store, and is probably a popular choice among locals. That's why it was still open pass 6pm.
