Have all of your Mexican friends been telling you how great menudo is, but you are still nervous to…read moretry it because of what is actually comes with?? Fear not, Menudería la Familia de Doña José is going to let you get your feet wet without actually having to eat a whole piece of tripe. They serve a consumé for 15 pesos that comes with all the great flavor without actually having to look at a piece of tripe. Once you get over the fear of eating intestines you can wade into the deep end and order a big bowl with all of the goods.
Honestly, this is one of the best breakfasts in Guadalajara. Bueno, bonito and barrato. It is right across the street from the UNIVA so there is no shortage of students and teachers to cater to. The place is almost always busy with the exception of weekdays then there are no classes.
My daily ritual consists of a consumé to get started. I feel like the consumé with lemon and lots of chile has medicinal properties so if you are a little under the weather this will make you feel better. I get an orange juice, a café de olla, and an order of eggs. I go back and forth on the eggs. Sometimes I order bacon, sometimes chorizo. It comes with a little order of chilaquiles and beans. All of that for 91 pesos, are you kidding me.
The service is really fast and you can get in and out pretty quickly. They usually do not have any one working the door so you just walk in and take a table. I think the weekends are a little more crowded and there is a host, but during the week you are on your own to find a table.
So, like I said, if you want to give the menudo a try, this is the place to test the waters. They do a really good job. I am super picky about my menudo. In the USA I will only eat the homemade kind and NEVER order it at a restaurant. Even in Mexico I am very selective about where I order it and only have a handful of places that I trust. La Familia de Doña José is one of those trusted menuderías.
