As we continue our visit to Montreal this week, we had our first sub-par experience. Friends who…read morelive in the area told us that L'Barouf was one of their favorite bars, with plenty of beer on tap, a good negroni, and free popcorn. Well, it may be a great place for locals, but not so much for tourists based on our experience. We walked in the front door on a rainy mid-afternoon and the place was fairly empty (as one might expect at that time of day) with only a single person at two separate tables and two more people sitting at the bar. My wife and I took seats at the bar as well and the bartender walked over to us, perfunctorily handed us a couple of drinks menus, and hovered over us until we made a selection. She apparently was in a hurry to get back to her conversation with the two local women at the other end of the bar. My wife ordered a glass of sauvignon ($8) and I ordered a Kilkenny cream ale ($9). The bartender returned with our drinks, placed them down in front of us without saying a word, and then went back to the other end of the bar. You could almost feel a shiver in the bar, our reception was so cold. It was if we were intruding on her life. Our interaction with the bartender aside, I do have to say that our friends were right; there is an impressive number of beers on tap here. I thoroughly enjoyed my Kilkenny cream ale, which was absolutely delicious, and I would have ordered another one if I could have gotten the bartender's attention. My wife, on the other hand, just wanted to finish her wine and for us to leave and find a friendlier bar to hang out in. (Which we eventually did. Stay tuned for that review.) I finally got the bartender's attention, signaled that I would like to pay, and she sort of sighed as if to say "okay let's get this over with so you can leave and I can go back to what I want to focus on instead of you..." Believe me, at this point the feeling was mutual.

We were asked if we could be gone by 7:30, as they were seating us at a table that had a reservation later. The place was nearly empty, so that was odd. We were sat inside, near the patio doors, which they kept open, and it was a very hot, humid day, so it felt as though there was hot air being blown on us. Very uncomfortable. We got drinks, I ordered one with Diet Coke/pepsi, another diner ordered the same drink but with regular, and they didn't tell us which was which when they were delivered, so unsure if the difference was noted. Before ordering food, I asked the waiter what "sauce vierge" was on a particular dish. He said "like a butter sauce". It was not even close. It's actually a lemon, oil, chopped tomato and basil sauce. The dish was also drizzled with balsamic, which did not pair well with the mashed potatoes under it. I've ordered that dish at a different location before and it was nothing similar at all. Someone else got ketchup spilled on them when their meal was being delivered, the server placed it down badly and the cup toppled over, right on a white shirt, which was unfortunate, however the food runner and our server handled it expertly and really went above and beyond, with our server even digging up a Tide stick, and they comped her meal, which we told them was unnecessary. Ups and downs this visit, but I'll still be back again in the future.

I came to MVP Sports Bar with one very specific assignment:…read more Watch Chelsea play Arsenal. This was a BIG match. Dogs aren't allowed inside, which is completely understandable, but MVP has a nice side-street patio out front with several tables. And--most importantly--a television. Perfect. Mum and Dad explained that we wanted to watch the Chelsea match. Inside the bar, the game was playing on what appeared to be every television in the building. Outside? Not so much. The staff tried to get the match onto our TV. We waited. They tried again. We waited. At one point, instead of Chelsea vs. Arsenal, I was watching a religious sermon. I had questions. Eventually Mum and Dad gave up and put the match on their PHONE. So there I was, at a sports bar, watching one of the biggest football matches of the day on approximately six inches of screen while an actual television sat directly in front of us. Mum ordered the Cajun chicken sandwich with fries and Dad had the chicken tenders. A second waitress also came by later and brought me a water bowl, which I genuinely appreciated. And that's why I'm not giving MVP a terrible review. The patio itself is perfectly pleasant, dogs are welcome outside, we were able to eat and hang out, and the water was a nice touch. But if your primary reason for choosing a sports bar is to watch a particular game with your dog on the patio, I'd definitely recommend confirming that the patio TV can show it first. Because apparently: Chelsea inside. Sunday sermon outside. Dogba's verdict: 3 paws out of 5. The patio: Dog-friendly: Water service: eventually Food for the humans: Chelsea match on the patio TV: Chelsea match on Mum's phone: Unexpected spiritual guidance: extensive Would I return for a casual drink with Mum and Dad? Sure. Would I trust them with an important Chelsea match again? Dogba remembers.

We were fortunate enough to have Alex as our server, and he truly elevated the entire experience. He was knowledgeable, personable, and did an excellent job walking us through the menu and offering recommendations and specials. After hearing his suggestions, I decided on the Snow Crab Cluster paired with a Sirloin, baked potato, and a side of whisky peppercorn sauce. It was a fantastic choice. The steak was cooked perfectly to my liking, the crab was fresh and flavorful, and the whisky peppercorn sauce tied the steak together beautifully. The drinks were equally impressive, and the wine pours were generous enough that I definitely felt I was getting good value. What stood out most, however, was the service. Alex was attentive throughout the meal, ensuring everything arrived correctly and that our glasses never sat empty. Between the excellent food, delicious drinks, and outstanding hospitality, I couldn't have asked for a better place to spend the evening reconnecting with my friends. The Keg delivered on every level, and I'd gladly return the next time I'm in Montreal. Thank you!
