I ordered a chile relleno lunch special to go. The photo shows what they served. I took it back. I went back to El Mariachi Restaurant in Zebulon, GA, which I will now call El Gaslighter. The lady tried to tell me that, that what you see in the photo is a chile relleno. She admitted it had NO chile and was carne remolida (?). I showed her a photo of a real chile relleno. She said I was talking about a chile poblano. Uh... yeah, a chile poblano relleno con queso, carne o algo mas. All of this conversation was in Spanish. She was trying to convince me that what you see in the photo is a chile relleno in all of Mexico and the U.S. Meanwhile, the man in the back was trying not to laugh, because clearly she thought I didn't know what a chile relleno is. Señora, es mi comida favorita. He hecho chiles rellenos, y chiles en nogada y tengo medio siglo experiencia en comermelos. But seriously, where's the pride in what you cook? It's not at El Mariachi. This place isn't really what I remembered from previous visits. The wife and I went out at about 1:20ish on a Saturday and they only had two people in there eating. I told my wife how I used to stop and grab lunch and the place would be busy. Not this time. The salsa was good. I ordered the supreme enchiladas. One chicken,one beef , one bean and one cheese. They came out super tiny with no enchilada sauce on them. Had good flavor but definitely not worth $8.50. My wife and daughter opted for the chimichanga plate. They seemed to like it. Not sure what the negative comments are about because this place is amazing. The servers are great, the food is amazing. So much so I compare it to every other Mexican place I eat, and none measure up. You can't beat the quality of food at the affordable price. We've been coming here for years. This is our go to for eating out. The best food, the best prices and the best service. They already know our order when we come in because we eat here so much. My kids beg to eat here. The food and service is always consistent and if something isn't right (which rarely happens) they are quick to make it right. I don't know where these other bad reviews come from. It's our favorite place to eat. I have a lot of food sensitivities and this is the only place that doesn't hurt my stomach. The food here is pretty good and I'm not Mexican but I think the food has an authentic Mexican taste for what I've experienced in the past. It seems to be popular with locals. They have a pretty good and extensive menu with an eclectic range of traditional Mexican diseases. The family who owns the restaurant are very nice and you can tell it is a true family business. The service was good as well. I ordered the shrimp fajitas which were served perfectly and the shrimp were not overcooked. The tacos were a great complement to the shrimp as well. Loved it! El Mariachi is good, basic Mexican cuisine served simply. That doesn't mean it's undesirable, the food is usually delicious for what you get. My personal preference here is their tacos and burritos. The service is usually prompt, though there have been a few times where I Intiially felt ignored by the staff until they felt ready to serve me. But I've had mostly positive experiences here. Oh, and it has drive thru takeaway, so if you're craving Mexican but in a rush, that's an excellent option as long as you call it in ahead of time. read more

Even though Zebulon has very few restaurants, I choose El Mariachi over any in this little town or any surrounding towns. When we are away from home and decide on Mexican for our meal, we always wait to get back home to eat here. The servers are very attentive, great prices, fast service and awesome food! read more

The food is like a fast food restaurant except worse. Their service is poor. It's food is a 50/50 shot at getting something subpar. As a local myself, I'd go to any of the other restaurants in the area. The atmosphere is probably the worst thing about the restaurant and why I avoid it like the plague. I kid you not, when you walk into that place, especially during high traffic hours, all eyes from the people eating are on you like you just got on stage for a performance. The restaurant doesn't have any of the atmosphere other Mexican restaurants in the area. I feel like when I walk in there to eat I have to rush as fast as I can to get out of there. Other Mexican restaurants have booths to eat at that block the view of other customers. The other Mexican restaurants are loud to where making conversation with your family isn't very limited. In this Mexican restaurant people are quiet, it's like a library or funeral. In my opinion if your in the area just go to any of the other Mexican restaurants. This is a friendly and efficient restaurant. The food is good, the salsa is make there and the tomatilla sauce is super. I especially like the shrimp cocktail, but the Police Special is real good if you don't mind the calories. Their specials are all very tasty. Lunch is busy by there is always a place to sit.
