Even though it was busy, the service was fast and friendly. Go with an appetite as the portions are large and the food was excellent!

Hungry for Mexican food I decided to try a new spot. I ordered their Wednesday special, 1 Enchilada (cheese), 1 (beef) Taco, Rice and Beans. The taco was bland, no tomatoes very very little lettuce and a small amount of cheese. The enchilada was just ok. Larger portion of rice and beans than expected. Waiter visited my table once to bring chips, second time for my drink and take my order, third time to bring my meal. Check wasn't even brought to my table. read more

This was my husband and my first time to Norfolk, NE. And we were visiting some people that had just moved here. We wanted to take them out for lunch and asked for their recommendation. Of course, being from California, we LOVE Mexican food. Just didn't know you could find it so far up north in Nebraska. We were five people and they seated us at a large table which was very comfortable. Almost immediately, they brought us a 2 huge bowls with chips and salsa. Very generous portion. I don't remember what all others had, but everyone's food came piping hot to the table and was flavorful and not too spicy (which you can choose). My husband and I are not big lunch eaters, so we decided to share a meal. We had the chimichanga plate. I must say, El Mezcal quality did deliver. We loved our enormous plate of food; but were glad that we were sharing. The chimichanga was stuffed to the brim with very flavorful meat and just the right amount of spice, covered in stringy melted cheese... yum! Accompanied by rice and beans, this plate totally hit the spot. Service was friendly, but didn't interact much once the meal was served. Didn't bother me enough to deduct a start. BEWARE! I got my credit card statement today and found an unapproved $5 charge in addition to the $35 charge for the meal. When I called, I was told it an additional charge for using my credit card because they have to pay 3.5% to the credit card company. I was not informed by the cashier that there would be a fee. They added the fee to my card without my knowledge or approval. 3.5% does not equal $5. Seems shady IMO. The food is really good as is the service but this unapproved charge shouldn't have happened. read more

The service was pretty bad. We were left in a corner and forgotten about throughout the meal. Both of our meals were covered in so much salt, we couldn't eat them, and I love salt, so this was a shock to me. I didn't receive any help from the server on that when I told her and she just asked me if I wanted boxes, after I had explained there was no way anyone could eat that. I've eaten at this place only once so I've only tried the taco salad, it wasn't the greatest as it had some weird milky sauce in the bottom that didn't taste good, but maybe you can try something else from the menu unless you enjoy a soggy salad. Hopefully everything else on the menu is good. Someday I may try it again, but for now I will stick to the places that I know are great and have great salads. read more

Visiting Norfolk from Miami, and of course I was craving tacos. The food was delicious. We ordered queso dip to go along with the chips and salsa, the queso dip was really good. I tried the Hawaiian margarita and I really enjoyed that, although it was missing the salt around the rim, but I think that's just how they serve them here. We order Al Pastor tacos and shrimp tacos. Those were the best Al Pastor tacos I've ever had, and the shrimp tacos were pretty good too. The service was great! I will definitely be coming back next time I'm in Norfolk. read more

We were looking for some great Mexican food while visiting Norfolk, Nebraska, and found El Mezcal via the Yelp app. The parking lot was packed but we were immediately shown to a table. I had a chicken chimichanga and hubby had the Fajita Tropical. Both were delicious. Service was very quick. The only downside is that it is VERY noisy inside making it difficult to hear our waitress or carry on a conversation between the two of us. The tables are close together so if you have reservations about that (as we do), this may not be the place for you. read more

We ordered take-out because their phone number wasn't working. Drove all the way there to order and waited 45 minutes for it to get done. got all the way home to find out they forgot a whole meal. tried to call to let them know and the phone still said the subscriber was busy. as we were driving back we called and got through on the second try. I told the employee that a meal was missing and went on to say their phone is having issues and the employee hung up on me. I called back and said I got hung up on (same employee) and tried to explain we had been trying to call for a while and we even called while sitting there waiting for food and got the same "the subscriber is busy" and their phone didn't ring at all at the restaurant. anyway....I tried to explain that to the employee and he was rudely trying to talk over me and I asked him to let me finish and he hung up on me AGAIN. WE WERE frequent customers but I think this ruined it for us. we will take our business elsewhere. we don't care to give our business to a restaurant who doesn't have good customer service and who doesn't acknowledge the customer or even let us talk. read more

For Norfolk, this as good as it gets! The service was exceptional! The waiter/waitress was very attentive and super quick despite having a full restaurant. The hostess was friendly and nice. It appeared to me that this was family-run, and you can tell that they take pride in their business. The restaurant was very clean and clutter free. The food was great! It was surprising authentic Mexican food. with small American influences. And most importantly, the margaritas were awesome!! They have a margarita special on some days, so make sure you ask before you order. On the day that I went, all lime margaritas were $1.50!! If I every have to go back to Norfolk, this is the one place that I would definitely revisit. read more

I gave this place another chance, and want to update my review. We've now tried take out once, and went into the restaurant on a busy Sunday evening as well. Although I would still never recommend the burritos, I've had two terrific entrees there since my last review. The Camerones Quesadilla is amazing, and so is the Lobster and Shrimp Chimi. The cheese sauce is a little runnier than I'd like, but it does have good flavor- especially when paired with their homemade salsa and fresh hot tortilla chips. Norfolk has limited options, and after a reconsideration I'd say this is one of few I'll continue to return to. Yesterday we sat at the bar and chatted a bit with the Manager, who was also the owner's daughter. She was VERY friendly, educating us on various tequilas and telling us about their other locations in Kansas and Missouri. This place is cute, with great service. There is a nice family feel here- birthdays are celebrated, and large tables make groups easy to accommodate. It was clean too! We'll be back again! read more

El Mezcal is by far the best Mexican restaurant I've ever visited. They always have great tasting food, extremely fast service, and great staff as well. You will never wait more than 8-10 minutes for your meal to be ready after you order it. I highly recommend ordering the white cheese dip in addition to the salsa that they bring you with the chips. It's delicious and just the right spiciness for my liking. I think the previous reviewer is correct on it being a family-run business, and they definitely do a great job. read more

I have eaten here a few times now. The service is always friendly and attentive. The food is good... not great, but good. Fajitas I had a long time ago were okay. Last night though, there were the chiles verde. Pork carnitas chopped down in size and swimming in spicy warm green sauce. Lots of Mexican places have this dish. Most are pretty good, and this was no exception. So I would assume the carnitas and chiles colorado would also be good here. read more

I live in Norfolk and the few times I've eaten there, the food was good. My problem with them is they just close whenever they damn well decide to. Last night, forty-five minutes before posted closing time, I went to order a couple orders of nachos and when I went in, I got "Sorry, we're slow tonight, so we're closed." So tonight, either being an idiot or thinking it couldn't happen twice, I call them one hour and 15 minutes before posted closing time and when I said I want to place an order for takeout.........yep, I got......."Sorry, we just closed the kitchen." If they're not going to stay open the hours they post, they shouldn't damned well post closing hours and the sign and website should say close: "Whenever we want to."!!! Completely ridiculous. read more

El Mezcal is average. I've been disappointed by the lack of flavor and creativity in many dishes. The hosts and staff are great though. They are very friendly and the food comes out pretty fast. I enjoy the free chips and salsa before meals. There are far better options for mexican food in Norfolk though, especially for "authentic" mexican food. read more
