Thankfully, I had one more opportunity to try Valor's chocolate a la taza (the hot drinking chocolate) because there is a location in Vigo not far from Rua Principe, where all of the shops are. The chocolate is marvelous; so rich, thick, and slightly bitter. It was such an incredible indulgence! There is also the option to order a cup of chocolate with churros, but I decided not to because churros never sit well in my stomach. So why only three stars for a five-star cup of chocolate, do you ask? Well, the woman working there was so rude to the point that I just wanted to get up and leave. She took forever to come out of the kitchen to greet me at the bar and was really obnoxious about saying she didn't understand me - trying to bring me a large instead of the smaller size (and the two words sound nothing alike) - and running off as I was correcting her. She also kind of just threw the cheque at me. Basically, she acted like I was hugely inconveniencing her the entire time I was there. I loved my first cup of Valor chocolate, I just wish the experience could have been more pleasant. There's still Bonilla, which is about a 5 minute walk away, which also has very good chocolate.

I should probably save money on hotels and just couchsurf in the back of the bakeries I visit. El Trigal has two outposts in Vigo; this is the smaller of the two and lacks the seating area that the larger location on Alexandre Bóveda has. The smaller location may not have the same breadth of baked goods, breads, bocadillos, and other prepared food, but nothing is sacrificed in terms of quality, freshness, or taste. For breakfast one morning, I was in the mood for magdalenas [1]. El Trigal had both the traditional and whole grain varieties, so I ordered one of each. To justify my perceived overeating: the magdalenas at El Trigal are slightly smaller than those sold at other bakeries in the area. The whole grain magdalena was delicious; it had a wonderful hint of cinnamon and nutmeg spices. The regular magdalena had just a touch of lemon flavor to balance the sweetness. Both were not overly dry; whole grain magdalenas, for some reason, always seem to have a dried-out consistency if they overcook for even a minute. The woman working at the counter was pleasant and friendly, happy to answer my questions and deal with my indecisiveness as I perused all of the breads and sweets on display. As much of a glutton as I may be, I did not take advantage of El Trigal's offer of free delivery (within Vigo city limits) with an order of 30 euros or more. Maybe next time! A friend in NY asked, "Dana, you walk 6km a day uphill, shouldn't you be losing weight?" I guess I've omitted a minor detail - my Spanish diet. The morning empanadilla at Tuypan went from a one-time event to a habit firmly ingrained in my morning hike to campus. Every morning, smell of baked goods wafting from the open door beckons me to be impulsive and indulge in all sorts of Galician specialties that go straight to the thighs. The empandillas have become a part of my morning routine. Whether I'm craving tuna, bacalao, or cerdo, the filling is consistently savory and delicious and the crust of the empanadilla is slightly crispy and fluffy, without being overly doughy and gummy. The bacalao is my favorite, with tuna placing a close second. Best of all, this substantial (e.g., substantially fattening) breakfast is only ONE euro! You can bet that I'll update this review once I digest this empanada and get the tortilla bocadillo on pan gallego for lunch.

Ivan, our server was amazing. He attended to all of our needs and just had a great vibe. The cabbage soup was complimentary and I loved it. It was perfect for a rainy day. The bacalao with fries is a huge portion. The steak and fries- also huge and I loved the yummy fat on it. The salad came plain so we just seasoned it ourselves with balsamic, vinegar and salt. I paid 20 Euros a breakfast for 3 people (natural orange juice, a huge croissant, cafe com leite and a " bombon" - a cafe with leche condensado....delicious but you need to like something very sweet and loaded with caffeine early in the morning to enjoy it.
