The food was good but the service was TERRIBLE! I was not greeted, I was not asked what I wanted to order, no explanation on the menu. I had to just tell the server what I wanted. After reading the reviews, I see that they have terrace but I wasn't told or offered and I would have loved to be seated there. I was the only customer and only ordered 2 tapas so 2 small pieces of bread, 1 with 1 piece of shrimp and the other with an ounce of goat cheese...it took 20 minutes to get my food. Splurge on this! Go at sunset. The terrace was incredibly beautiful and the food was delicious. Service was very professional. The flatbread with house-made bacon and gouda cheese was my favorite. read more

Beautiful rooftop dining area! We tried the Camarones et queso and it was delicious! Also tried the salmon, which while flavorful, has a lot of liquid on the plate that was hard to know what to do with! I also tried the OAXACAN old fashioned and it was good, but sweet. Overall, we would come back! You can't beat the view on a nice night. Dinner for 4 cost us around $80 USD. read more

Ate here on a Friday night while visiting Oaxaca. We had 7:30 reservation and got a great seat on their rooftop overlooking the city. We started out ordering their sausage platter to share as an appetizer. Three different sausages on a bed of red cabbage kraut with three different mustards. The platter was excellent and just enough for four to enjoy. I got the pasta carbonara that was good. My wife got the shrimp on a bed of rice with a garlic wine sauce you poured over. She said it was good. Another at the table got an arugula salad that she enjoyed. Service was good and everyone enjoyed the dining experience. read more

Stopped in for drinks and a late dinner at the bar, returned for their fixed price New Year's rooftop dinner party a few evenings later. The owner stopped by our table on both evenings to ensure a good time was had by all. Great bartender, well-made cocktails, really good food. On new year's eve we enjoyed the house made smoked sausage on some gently smashed potato, cold squash soup, beef Wellington (!) and plenty of champagne. So fun. read more

We're back in oaxaca and our night began and ended at el olivo. We started off with tapas / mixed / hand crafted cocktails and were surprised with another specialty drink for my bday. The owner and half the staff remembered my gf and I, after around 5 to 6 months ago visit. Very impressive and warming vibe. They also have a ton of craft beer to pair with whatever you order. I'm not a big fan of giving bad reviews, but I've had wonderful experiences at all the other places we had gone to like the local authentic market, small hole in the wall joints, but this place was our least favorite. We ended up leaving early half way into our drinks. The cocktails were way over priced compared to the surrounding places and the service wasn't too welcoming. Not to mention our food seemed like it was just microwaved. Honestly, it seems like a place that's catered to English speaking Americans or Europeans that are uncomfortable eating authentic local food. There was a weird vibe there as well that's really hard to describe. It's as if we left Oaxaca as soon as we sat down. I like to give all places the benefit of the doubt, but I will not be going back to this place. read more

great place - eclectic menu with a spanish focus. i love going in the afternoon because it isn't busy then and i can get the best seat: at the front edge of the roof deck where i can soak up the super pleasant view of the quiet street below and the mountains in the near distance. food is good though i haven't tried a lot of the offerings because i avoid gluten. the Mediterranean salad is SO good. i've found that meat is consistently overcooked in oaxaca and it is only a little less so here but i still enjoy the pinchos. and the paella compares well with the best i've had in valencia! staff has always been attentive and pleasant. read more

We had been to El Olivo a few weeks back and experienced wonderful food and service. I had also visited El Olivo (at its old location on Calle Murgia) in 2013 and had an equally good experience. However, after tonight, we will never return. My fiancee and I both ordered pork dishes -- his the "Cerdo Confitado" and mine the ensalada Lyonnaise, which I had two weeks prior and really enjoyed. When our food arrived, I couldn't help but notice that the usually warm "house-made" bread they serve was cold and stale. My Lyonnaise salad -- which usually features very nice pancetta-- was inedible. The greens were wilted and drowning in the dijon vinaigrette and the "pancetta" was strips of solid fat. No meat. I put the strips of fat on a separate dish to show the waitstaff. As for my fiancee's "Cerdo Confitado" (Pork loin), it was also 80% fat and barely edible. Around a very small hunk of meat there was three inches of fat on all sides. When we mentioned this to the waiter and showed him the inedibly fatty cuts of so-called "meat," he went to the kitchen to talk to the chef. He returned with a very long and obnoxious story, telling us that we should have told our waitress that we "could not eat fat." Needless to say, we were insulted. All the food in Oaxaca has been fantastic and the service unfailingly kind. This was very strange, and it seemed rather smug and snobby. They would not amend our bill with a discount of any sort, nor did they offer replacement food. They did provide a free dessert, albeit one we were not asked to choose. In turn, we found the kitchen staff and waitstaff included rather insincere. On the way out, there were no despedidas either. We will not be coming back, and wouldn't recommend El Olivo for its food or service. read more
