Wonderful quaint little residential restaurant on a quieter street in El Centro. We shared a ham and cheese bruschetta, chorizo and mushroom pizza and a memorable creamy spaghetti carbonara which I would recommend to anyone. The three dishes with a gratis amuse were plenty for me and my wife and we walked out with leftovers. We paired our meal with a few glasses of affordable wine and left sated and happy. We went there on a Friday night. 20 minute wait. Service was good; waiter was very nice. Food was pretty so-so. My friend had the pasta with shrimp, which was dry. My shrimp were ok (note to self: remember to ask if their shrimp has been peeled). Salads were good. A pleasant and surprising find in Oaxaca.The quaint little place did not disappoint and service was great. Our server was hustling! My wife and I came to Tastavins on our last day in Oaxaca, attracted by the tapas style cuisine (since we were not terribly hungry). I gotta say, the grub was top notch. I've been to Spain a few times and the tapas here in the heart of Oaxaca de Juarez were very comparable to those I had in Madrid. They had a good wine list and even a decent list of bottled craft brews. The tapas were so good we ended up indulging in the cuisine beyond what we had planned. Great spot! What a find! We flew into Oaxaca and after dragging our bags multiple blocks because of street closures were not only starving but also not trying to get dressed up to go grab a bite. I know it says tapas but the portions were large enough to fill an adult, which was a great thing. Keep that in mind as you might need less than you think. On the quality of the food and service, we could not have asked for a better first meal. Everything was freshly prepared and tasted great. This is the place for a delicious tapas/meal (the owner know everything about tapas because he is originally from Barcelona) with a great wine, mezcal and/or beer. It is a tiny bar/restaurant just outside of the "real" downtown area with most of the restaurants and bars. There are about 6 tables but normally there is space for a small group, you can also reserve a table if you have a bigger group. I really like the simple design and the layout. It is a great place to go with some friends to have a snack and some wine/mezcal/beer. They have a great selection of wines of all of the world. I am more a beer and mezcal drinker so I love the artisan beers of Tierra Blanca and the house mezcal (only 20 pesos!!). The best thing about this place is that when you order a glass of wine or a beer you get a small tapas (montadito) with it. There are four different ones for every glass you have, this changes regularly with some variations. Of course you can order extra tapas, I really really love the Jamon Serano! Delicious and not expensive at all. They also have a menu of the day, my favourite is Friday lasagna day! D-E-L-I-C-I-O-U-S!! Other favourites of mine that are on the menu are the cheese pasta, the prawn pasta and the croquettes with different fillings, also typical Oaxaqueñan ones such as Mole Negro! They also have a lot of choices for vegetarians. The prices here are so cheap! Just amazing what you have to pay after a whole night of drinking and eating! This is a must go if you are in Oaxaca! How is this place not more busy? The restaurant is small, but enough to seat more than 15 or so people. They have a large wine list, and most by the glass are around 40 pesos. Every drink comes with a tapa... so delicious! We also ordered the carbonara which wasn't traditional but still tasty, the tapas platter which came with an assortment of toasted baguettes and toppings, as well as the bruschetta. The bruschetta was my least favourite, too much bread, but we were so full from everything else, it didn't matter! We had three plates to share and five drinks and with a tip it was 400 pesos, such a deal! read more

One of the few places where you can consistently get a good glass (or bottle) of wine in Oaxaca. It's a small place, and table tend to fill up quickly with a mix of foreigners and local Oaxacans. Each drink order comes with a complimentary tapa and all of the food I've ordered off the menu or from their daily specials has been top-notch (get the baked eggplant special if they have it!). They have weekly specials and their beer and mezcal selection is decent--those who want mezcal can obviously have their pick of the many new hip mezcalerías sprouting up every month. read more
