After visiting the church, this is an alternative to the official store. They have small vials of the dirt already packed up, as well as numerous other little religious gifts and jewelry. Reasonably priced and they have more than one register running, so you'll get in and out quickly as opposed to the official store where you will stand in line for 40 minutes to check out. While I didn't actually buy anything, I have to leave a review for El Potrero Trading Post because the woman working was so, so knowledgeable and friendly and definitely worthy of five stars! She was able to share so much information about the nearby church as well as some restaurant recommendations in Chimayo, Las Vegas, Santa Fe, and even Taos. I wasn't the one inquiring about restaurant recommendations (the woman ahead of us was) but I did enjoy overhearing the suggestions. As others mentioned, El Potrero is located very, very close to El Santuario de Chimayo and offers a variety of food and trinkets including "perhaps the finest selection of chili powder!" You need to visit the Vigil Store if you are in the area. It's a religious store, a spice store and art museum - another Only In New Mexico store. They sell the usual mass produced Saints. They sell the usual New Mexican spices. What makes them special are the unique woodcarving by local artists. The carvings are beautiful, freaky, funny but all are quality work. The staff is glad to give you the life story of the artist. If you believe in supporting local artist drop in - you won't be disappointed. Oh, parking can be a bear but don't let that discourage you, I'm sure they have a Saint Anthony santo to find you that lost parking space. Or, some other local saint, they have them all. read more

You can literally smell the chili outside the door. That is what I had in mind, a delicious bag of chili to take home. The super nice lady working there was up for a conversation, which I seemed to notice New Mexico peeps are up for. Good luck finding someone to talk to in the San Francisco Bay Area. El Potrero is within the grounds of the Sanctuary of Chimayo. While el Rancho De Chimayo is closed for recovery from a fire, it is pretty much the only option in Chimayo to get food. A family run business. Simple. Cheap. Good food. Fantastic spices. My wife is a stickler for good tamales.... theirs are excellent !!!! But the biggest reason for going there is getting a big bag of Chimayo Chili for $5 !!!!! We bought a bag, and had plenty to share with lots of people back home. read more
