We were passing through Lewistown when we stopped in at El Rancho. There was a sign when we entered, saying that they were short-staffed and be prepared to wait. We were seated and yes, service was slow, but not unexpected. We ordered beef fajitas and a combo with chile relleno and cheese enchilada. As a previous reviewer had noted, the hot sauce (served with tortilla chips) had chunks of cauliflower in it. That was just the beginning of an un expected Mexican dinner. The food arrived hot and the fajitas were sizzling, and were a pile of onions, bell peppers and...coarse grind ground beef. Not skirt steak or flank--but ground beef. The chile relleno was equally inventive: a fried tortilla wrapped around a cheese stuffed pepper. The enchilada was pretty standard. In a small town it's rare to find a good place to eat! My boyfriend doesn't really like the food at El Rancho Alegro but I used to think it was ok! I really liked the Margarita's! I talked him into going for lunch today and we were really disappointed! We ordered our favorite Margaritas and they were too sweet and only 3/4 full from the top at 13.50 each! I ordered a shot of tequila to even it out! The waitress was young and didn't seem to care that we were unhappy! After we ordered a second one with the same result I asked if we could get at least get a full glass for the 13.50 , she went off on a rampage about how rude I was! I asked for jalepenos, which we did not receive at all! The waitress."holly" yelled at me for being rude about asking for a full Margarita! I asked for the manager to which I was told there was not one on duty! Ugh! I then responded with the customer is always right, being a waitress myself! So she hollered" not here" ! The customer is not always right here! She threw my bill and boxes on the table and said; do not come come back here again! Wow! My go to choice when I'm trying out a new Mexican restaurant is the Chile relleno. I've discovered that if I like the Chile relleno , I usually like everything else. I was pleasantly surprised to discover the best chile relleno I've eaten in Montana. I wasn't very hungry, so that's all I ordered. On a return visit about a week later, I ordered a combination plate with the Chile relleno , verde burrito, rice and refried beans. I liked everything, but it was a little on the mild side. I'm not a person who enjoys a lot of hot spice (truth: I am a wimp in that department) So if you enjoy spicy you'll have to add some sauce. And a friend told me that if you'd like spicy, you should see if they have green sauce that day. I will stop here again the next time I come through town. read more

The food was amazing, authentic and delicious. I had the tacos with shredded beef and the shredded beef was the best I've ever had. It was so tender and juicy, it made the tacos next level. We didn't have a good experience. I had chile rellenos, without smothering. They didn't taste very good, and I didn't finish them. The next day I had stomach upset. I don't remember what my wife ordered, but she got quite sick---diarrhea for two days. I'm told that one reason this happens in some Mexican restaurants is that food is left out for too long or ingredients are allowed to mix with each other in sloppy preparation locales.. I don't know if that is what happened here, but we were disappointed---not to mention that it put quite a crimp in our vacation plans. read more

I've been a supporter of this place since it opened. It has a history of good food. That's a thing of the past. Went there tonight with my wife, expecting a nice dinner. Yea, big time disappointment. Ordered combo fajitas, my usual go to. They came with tails and a shells on the shrimp, "Sizzling" hot plate of meat, with shells on????? I've eaten fajitas all over the US, and ever had to peal tails off the shrimp in the "sizzling hot" fajitas. Asked the server, and was informed that "that's how fajitas are served, shells and tails on". This place is absolutely incredible. I had steak tacos and I was most definitely pleased with them. I used to travel to Atascadero, CA where I would have some of the best street tacos made in CA. To have these kind of tacos in MT makes me more than happy. This place has become one of my favorite spots and can say I am even more excited to try there other street tacos! also if you haven't tried fried ice cream this would be a good place to do it. read more

I held back from 1 star for two reasons: the Mexican music that played and the waiter who spoke Spanish and literally ran everywhere. We ordered chicken mole, a chicken taco, and a side of guacamole. Don't let the image of authenticity fool you: the food is not that great and the "taco" was embarrassing; a hard shell tortilla with a tablespoon of shredded chicken on lettuce and shredded cheese. I am so sorry to do a review after ordering chicken mole - I know it's tough to get right. The menu said "boneless chicken breast with mole sauce". I was surprised to se the chicken cut into tiny pieces; I was not surprised at that point, but disappointed by the overly sweet and watered down mole. The beans were pinkish and blah. On the bright side, they had my favorite commercial hot sauce, Tapatío, so I doused everything with it - which helped a lot. The guacamole had a dark film over the top that suggested it was not so fresh, but it had a crazy amount of onion. Pass. The salsa was nasty, too. Finally - I got a Rancho margarita, which was good and strong. Not served with lime, but, hey, I was with my favorite person - my husband - so we had a good time. Full bar, a bit pricy for a small town joint. They got my order wrong the tamales were mushy and refried beams were soup. I wish they would have told me my plate was hot I Burt my fucking tit on it. My girlfriend and I ate there this week and were not impressed. The waiter seemed annoyed that we showed up, even though it was nearly an hour before their posted closing time. He was brusque and borderline impolite. The food was prepared too quickly to have been cooked and was bland. Even the supervisor ( chef? owner?) seemed unfriendly and seemed to be feuding with his help. Generally our meal was not good, and the atmosphere was tense and unfriendly. The waiter seemed to be inconvienced that I was there. I came in by myself as I am out of town for business and the two other tables had families, he seemed friendly to them. I ordered a stuffed burrito, nothing special. Salsa had very little flavor. When it came time to pay I gave the waiter my debit card, he ran it twice and said it was invalid. I explained that I've had issues with it reading and asked him to enter the numbers in. He did but told me the same thing, I don't think he tried or made an error entering the numbers in. We decided to give this place a try, despite the mediocre reviews. We ordered the small combo meals. Couple of tacos with beans and rice for $9.99. I would agree that the food isn't great, but it's not bad either. We both thought it tasted fresh and were satisfied. I thought the meals were pretty pricy for what you got. The service was ok. There was a guy who spoke Spanish and seemed to run around doing everything. There were some teenagers just kind of hanging around in the back that would fetch things for him, but they were very awkward with us. I was in Lewistown for work. We gave this place a whirl. Very expansive menu with lots of great options. Beer selection was a normal Mexican restaurant selection. When these guys opened up, i was skeptical since most mexican food in Montana is taco-bellish, or just sad, or tex mex. They actually came through! This is among the better mexican restaurants in montana. They have opened another restaurant in Miles city i believe. I would guess it is only because they have been successful here. I like big portions and they have them. They give you lots of beans and rice, and i found a burrito that is just HUGE! These are good guys and i hope they will stay here forever. You get two kinds of salsa, for some reason i am attracted to the non traditional kind that has more of a cole slaw appearance. I would suggest calling in a reservation if you are just traveling through and dont want to miss out. I was going to take my cousin there with her family. We just casually got up to go eat there and i thought i would warn them we were coming with our large group. They were busy and the wait would be 1 hour! :( oh well i learned my lesson. read more
