Who doesn't love unassuming Mexican delis masquerading as food havens. As a new (though maybe not long-term) resident of Sunnyside, I was looking for a dope Mexican spot with un-gentrified food. Little did I know there was this place only a few blocks away from me. Luckily, I was able to place an order on Seamless. My go-to item is the queso enchiladas with the verde sauce (though called as other names in other takeout locations). The pickup time was 25-35 minutes on Seamless, but I think the food is ready at least 5 minutes or so earlier in my opinion. The actual deli is quite big and lighted and unlike some of the other places I've been do, the dining area has a lot of seats for eating in. The food itself was amazing. The verde sauce was amazing and they don't overkill you with beans and rice. For $8, I don't know how you can go wrong. Unless others prove me otherwise, I'll be back. read more

The most unassuming Mexican deli in the hood also contains one of the least obvious taco gems in the hood. Upon first entrance it looks like any regular bodega, but dig a little deeper. Back in this convenience store type setup is a full fledged kitchen complete with chairs, an ordering window, and a robust menu full of Mexican classics. When it comes to businesses like this in the borough, the saying "there is more than meets the eye" really applies. Unaffiliated with the uber popular El Rey De Taco Truck in Astoria (#!), this Rey del Taco is the polar opposite: less well known, no street presence, centered at a brick and mortar and a different menu with more offerings than just the quick and easy stuff. Similarly to the truck biz, they accept credit cards (over $10) and offer delivery. Tacos are indeed really solid here. At a market price of $3 a pop, they are stuffed well and seasoned like the many available via truck. Meat wise, the usual suspects are all there; a very tasty chorizo, stewed up carnitas, and tasty asada are all available. I would venture this is what they are known for (if at all) and should continue to be their bread and butter so to speak. The nice part is their menu is so much more than tacos. There is a plethora of other Mexican specialties scattered across the menu in the form of tortas, huaraches, chalupas, tostadas, and more. They also have some really good breakfast options, such as huevos con chorizo or tocineta that are worth pursuing when the time is right. Finally, the guys who run the joint are super nice people. THIS PLACE IS RUDE, DISRESPECTFUL AND HAS SCAMMED ME. I bought (over the phone) some delivery for the amount of $16.22. I got a call back saying that my card got declined. When I checked my account online, it looks like the transaction of $16.22 went to "pending" and took money from my account - So I called them back and explained that it went through and it's showing in my account and that I would be glad to send a friend over (because I'm disabled and can't walk over myself) with a picture of my account to prove that the charge went through. The woman on the phone told me that she was not willing to meet my friend, that I had no money on my card and that it was declined. I tried several times to explain what had happened and it is obvious that her machine is broken or something is up! She started raising her voice and telling me the same thing over and over again. I will never order from these guys again. ==============UPDATE================== Furthermore, my friend went to get two bacon egg and cheeses on a croissant, and had only $10 on him. He asked if he can make the order and then come back with the other $2. Get this- the proprietor of the shop literally said, "You're not going to come back anyway." When Taco Rey de Oro doesn't swing through the night, this is the only place in the neighborhood for tacos. You can count on it being a safe spot for good Mexican food but the food is on the pricey side--they add TAX to their food. I'm not saying it's wrong, but being from the neighborhood, I have pretty high standards for food pricing in this area. We're not Manhattan, and we shouldn't be paying Manhattan prices. Paying almost $10 for 3 tacos that will get you semi-full feels like voluntary robbery. Complaining aside, the food here is pretty decent. It is a hole-in-the-wall but I'm sure most people know this place for its back cafe than for being a deli. The people making the food are always so nice and I don't think I've ever been highly disappointed with my food. The tacos ($3 each) are amazing but the burritos are a-ok, and paying close to $10 for an average burrito doesn't really amuse me, even though they are huge. Randomly wandered into Woodside today just to get my hands on their delicious tacos. The restaurant is actually in the back of the store with a few seats in case you rather eat there. I ordered the usual, Tacos Al Pastor to go. Was surprised it was still hot when I got home, which is always a good thing you know. First off, when you come here don't expect that Taco Bell nonsense. No offense to them but no, nah nada. The tacos here are made fresh when you order so be prepared to wait. Now to the best part, eating them. The pork was so tender and well seasoned it honestly didn't need the sauce but a few squeezes from the lime included did the trick. 5 stars for the food, 3 stars for the customer service that the owner provides. The lady at the front counter is the owner. Shes very nasty & does not know how to treat regular customers. So FYI she has this dumb policy where if you buy a 6pack of beer she'll charge you $3.50 PER beer!! Therefore we paid $22 for a 6 pack of Modelo Mind you we were not getting any type of bartender service we got up went to the front part of the deli, got the beers & opened it up ourselves. On top of that we had ordered food which is why we were drinking the beers inside. Only if you buy the 6 pack of beer TO GO will she charge you $11 for the pack. This dumb rule was made by her & her policy is not visible anywhere in the facility. We only found out about it when we were ready to pay & thats when she said to us "I saw you grab the pack of beer & I was going to let you know but I decided not to bcus thats how I make my money" Anyway don't buy beer here unless its to go cus she's one scheming ass b**ch read more

My family and I are long time customers and lately their food just hasn't been great. Their chicken is very dry, old and thin. (Ordered a torta) Not only can you tell by looking at it but you cant even bite into it very well nor swallow it. We found a hair last time in our food as well. We kept telling them everytime we found something wrong with the food and unfortunately, who knew the lady was taking tabs on us. My family and I simply tried to inform the restaurant about these issues because we genuinely know they can be better. Unfortunately, the lady who was taking tabs on us told us very rudely to f*** off. It doesn't hurt us personally but it hurts their business. Treat customers with respect especially if they come back after finding hair in the food. At the very least, they lost long time customers. read more

Probably my favorite nearby taco spot! Not too many people really know about this place (hence the amount of reviews). I don't exactly know if they're affiliated with the El Rey taco truck in Astoria, but I wouldn't be surprised! They're both bangin'! When it comes to traditional Mexican Tacos, you really can't go wrong here. They've also got the torta, quesadilla, and burrito options if you're looking to level up! But if you like having a variety of things, the taco-route is the way to go! They've got carne asada, chicken, carnitas, al pastor, and my favorite of them all... lengua! Tacos are 3 bucks a piece for any meat and they manage to stuff each taco with a good amount of meat. I think 2-3 tacos can fill me up fo sho. They're located right under the 7 train line and a block away from the 52nd street stop, but feel free to drive there; street parking is tough to find. You can even bike there! read more

Yummy tacos and quick service. Ive had their carnitas, chicken, and spicy sausage one. The quesadilla is also quite tasty. The banana smoothie is good, although quite basic. It's $4 and you cant customize it vs. places nearby where for $6 you get 3-5 ingredients. However, I enjoyed it and it hit the spot. The place itself is very unassuming and inside the deli. Despite it's odd atmosphere - it feels like you're eating in a mini-mart/bodega-type setting - this place is pretty delicious. It offers your standard Mexican fare at reasonable prices. I had the chicken enchiladas and my girlfriend got a chicken burrito. Both were delicious and offered large portions. The chicken was tender, the tortillas were soft, and the rice and beans were on point. There's nothing I can complain about. For a real hole in the wall market with a grill in the back, this place makes awesome tacos! Price went up to $2.50 a taco but oh so good. The place is very close to me and the weather isn't great, so I decided to order the mixed fajitas. The woman told me that it would be ready in 15 minutes, but it ended up being ready in 30 minutes. I thought it was expensive ($11.92) - compared to Chinese food lunch special ($6.50) and sushi lunch special ($11.98) - but it's a lot of food. Probably 3-4 portions worth. I've only gotten delivery from here, and I've only had the nachos. Delivery is always super fast, and they have a bunch of different nachos to choose from. I've had the chorizo (delicious but a little salty for me) and the regular (meatless, my go-to). If I can ever resist ordering nachos, I'd be interested to try some other menu items. read more

Looking for local tacos in Woodside isn't hard since there's tons of Mexican trucks and delis in my area. But to find a great one is where the true search begins. I tried out El Rey Del Taco on Skillman and the restaurant is in the back of a bodega but well visible. I tried the chicken tacos which come in 3 for $3 each and they were insane good. Fresh as it gets since the man makes them for you on the spot and it takes about 5-7 minutes to have them ready. Very friendly staff, nice quaint atmosphere. I ordered here through uber eats for me and my pals before a night out. I didn't eat until we came back but it was the most unpleasant experience with tacos. I didn't order any spicy meat or jalapeños on my food or any of our food and everything was outrageously hot we could barely get through it. In a city that is seriously slacking in quality Mexican food, El Rey del Taco definitely (almost) hits the spot. There are tables if you want to eat in, but this is pretty much a bodega with a small kitchen in the back, so I'd suggest take out. After trying most of the menu, I now usually order either the chicken nachos or tacos (chicken, beef, and tongue). There is only one place in my life where I've seen Mexican food done exactly this way, and that's Mexico. I got the beef tacos, and what I got was flour tortillas stuff with sliced steak I saw them cut off a giant side of beef on demand, crammed with onions and cilantro, sauce on the side. Fresh and tasty. Didn't get the quesadilla, but saw the way they do them, which is really similar to what would generally be called a hard-shell taco around here. Again, only place I've seen that done is Mexico. I'm not saying that makes it better, but it does tell you these guys have some idea what they're doing. Is this a religious experience?
