We enjoyed the ambiance all the painting, decorations and the like. The service was excellent and prompt. Chips and salsa arrived while we were looking at the menu. Our experience with Mexican food (Californians with lots of good authentic Mexican food places) first sign is salsa that tastes good. The salsa was the bomb. Fantastic salsa. Have always been skeptical of Mexican food north of the Red River. Stemmed from bad experiences in Kansas, Indiana and Wyoming. Gave El Rey a try while in Heber Springs and glad we did. Food was authentic and very good. I had the El Rey which is the what the meat lover pizza is to Pizza Hut. It is fajita steak, chicken and sausage with some cheese and some pico on the top. Came out hot and was very good. Wife had the T-bone steak covered with grilled onions, peppers and tomato and enough beans and rice for two. It was very good and came out piping hot. Meal portions were so big that couldn't finish and took back to cabin and had for lunch next day. Staff was super friendly and came by often to check to see if needed anything. Will plan to stop by on next trip. read more

Great food, good service and big menu. They sang Happy Birthday to my wife last year and gave her a free desert. The desert was topped with whipped cream and before he left his spoon was used to put a little on her nose. I got it on tape. Great food and a big menu. We stopped here for lunch. We were "warned" by some locals that this wouldn't be like Mexican food in California. So, we went in curious. The building is standard to look at from outside, but when you step in. Wow. They have had some talented artists work on their murals, and chairs, Just beautiful. The staff were courteous and efficient. I also want to note that I travel with a Service Dog and this place gets Bailey's 4paw approval. We ordered off the lunch menu. I ordered the beef chimichanga. The chips came out warm and the salsa was delicious and mild. After a reasonable wait our food was delivered. The chimichanga was a little smaller than I'm used to, but it was very good. The beans, rice, guac and sour cream all made for excellent nachos lol. The food was good and very filling. I'm not sure what was meant by d"ifferent than California" other than maybe it was milder? But I like mild. Over all, if I were in the area again, I'd eat here. read more

Very good authentic Mexican food. Service was prompt and personable. We stopped in on a road trip from a wedding and being from Texas knew Mexican food is hit or miss in Arkansas. Not this place! Since this was our first time there, we ordered a Mexican flat steak meal and a large combo platter with everything and one Pina colada. Unfortunately the only thing we liked was the salsa and the raw onions on our plates. I would have liked to finish the salsa, but they never refilled our chips. The items we ordered are the true authentic type bland Mexican food we eat when we are in Mexico. Everything here just really needs more seasoning during cooking. They also only have white cheese dip. Many people like this, but we don't. I am sure we just ordered the wrong things, even though we got a large variety of their basic food. The menu is very large and offers so many different types of meals. I am sure many people have found items they love and I think everyone should at least try it once. Maybe ask others or the staff what people usually order and like. We did not do that as usual. Even though we did not care for what we ordered, I gave this 2 stars instead of 1 star, because Las Playitas is so much worse. Our bill was $55.00, which seemed pricey, but we did order a lot of food. Unfortunately we won't be back, but I hope this doesn't deter you from trying it. You may love it. read more

My wife & I went here while visiting Heber Springs for the 1st time & absolutely loved it! The service was very efficient & food was awesome. My wife ordered the Shrimp Chimichanga & I had the Shrimp Burrito. The amount of food you get for the price is superb, could barely finish mine & much to my surprise my wife ate the whole Chimichanga! We stayed at an AirBNB & most of the recommended spots in the welcome book were closed & we were delighted that we found this Gem! We grabbed a to go menu & will leave it at the AirBNB, definitely recommend El Rey if you are in Heber Springs or even just passing through for the day! read more

This was the best Mexican food I could find for several years, then they seemed to have lost their head cook. In the past when you ordered different foods they each had their own nice taste. But the last 3 times I ate there that has changed. Now it seems that they just put a lot of red sauce over everything and it all tastes the same. I have not been there for about a year now, but do plan on returning. I will just need to order items that are not covered with red sauce. Hope it has returned to the old quality. read more

This was always my family's favorite and best Mexican Restaurant in Heber. My daughter and I ate there for lunch and noticed the chips tasted and were burnt looking. Our tacos and enchiladas tasted like each one had a teaspoon of salt in it. The chicken wasn't shredded like it use to be. I literally had a chunk of chicken in my enchiladas. Well we tried take out a month (now) later to give them another chance. Same food as what we ate in the restaurant previously. Chicken in whole dry pieces with dark meat in the enchiladas. So SALTY it overpowered the food. Chips were completely burnt. We will not be back until changes are made. Unfortunately since we had take out we couldn't try the food until we got home. $67 in the garbage. read more

My wife and I just enjoyed a very nice dinner at El Rey. The servers were all polite, efficient, and very friendly. The food that we ordered was well prepared and very flavourful. I ordered the Tacos de Carne Asada plate and I have to say that it was excellent. It came with pico de Gallo, retried beans, and also a nice fresh Chile verde sauce on the side: good flavors. My wife ordered the Chile Verde with chicken. She loved it. I tried hers and agreed that it was quite good. The food we ordered both looked good and tasted delicious. The staff all followed Covid protocol and wore masks. The restaurant serves beer, wine, and cocktails if desired. I ordered the seafood fajita and it was absolutely amazing. Super flavorful and delicious. They allowed me to substitute the zucchini and squash for the peppers and onions for no additional charge. It came with rice and beans as well as all the typical fixins for fajitas. I was thrilled with my meal. My partner unfortunately was not as happy with his meal. Favorite dish is Marios Special which is skirt steak and a chicken breast with cheese sauce, a cheese enchilada with beans and rice and tortillas. Next is the Pollo Gonazales. Chicken breast with ham and bacon covered in cheese sauce. The side is rice and salad topped with pico de gallo, sour cream and guacamole. Have to say I didn't expect much from a Mexican restaurant in a small town in Arkansas - but this place was a pleasant surprise. There were six of us- both our daughters and their boyfriends. One of the guys said the fajitas were some of the best he's tasted. My chicken enchiladas were delicious with spicy cheese sauce and plenty of chicken.
