Based on a single visit, I'd say the food is pretty good at El Tapatio. There were no problems with our meal, but I can't think of anything that really stood out for how good it was. The chips, salsa, queso, rice, beans, and various enchiladas were all "fine". Our waitress was hard to understand, and we had to ask her to repeat things many times. The food is very mediocre and the service is terrible. Drinks and appetizers take forever even when it's not busy. After reading some of the other reviews saying the service is bad you would think they would make an adjustment. Disappointing. Update: service got even worse. I was in town for Graduation this past May and we were looking for places to eat. We were staying on Perkins so it was an easy drive down. Be sure to check in on Yelp as they have a free offer. The flan was nothing fantastic and not a lot of flavor. Definitely needed a better caramel sauce to perk it up a bit. If i was back home i might give it a 3 but it is a solid Stillwater 4!! I used to come here all the time when we lived closer. Just came in from out of town so excited and I have to say it's been a horrible experience. The food is not good at all. Shredded cheese in enchiladas and on the kids burger, chili telling barely cooked and absolutely no flavor. My daughter's chicken dish tasted like canned chicken and my other daughter's chicken tortilla soup tasted like campbells chicken noodle soup and was completely filled with rice and had onion peels and avocado peels in it! We really enjoy stopping at El tapatio when we take our dogs to the vet. The swrvice is always friendly despite how rushed and stressed they look. The staff are always buzzing around with plates of food. Our servers are prompt and hospitable. The inside looks like a hacienda that would be a great venue for a party. We really love how nice it is on the patio during the warm weather months. The guacamole is always packed with tomato and red onion. Today I tried the cheese enchiladas with the green sauce. Beautiful patio near the creek if you want to eat outside. We ordered a round of beer and out came huge mugs that were literally ice cold. The chips and salsa made a great start. Overall the food was pretty good, everyone thought the food was average Mexican fare. I ordered the avocado enchiladas and the avocados were the sole ingredient inside. I think there could have been some back up singers in the enchilada band like maybe a bit of lettuce and tomato to round it out a bit. I don't know if this place makes the food for the Chophouse and then the Chophouse sells it, but I was not at all impressed. If I had known, I would have just stayed on campus and saved myself the gas. I did wish the server showed up at my table just a smidge more often. This restaurant was a great find during my business Travels through Stillwater Oklahoma. The locations is near a creek with plenty of outdoor seating. I travel weekly around the US and the food at this location was excellent. I had the Vegetarian Fajitas with great flavor actual veggies unlike some locations that only give out peppers and onions. The guacamole was real homemade and not the mushy baby food like you get at other locations. The staff are friendly, attentive with great service! I will definitely return! read more

Every now and then i select a place to eat without consulting Yelp just to make sure im tracking right. I wished i would have consulted Yelp on El Tapatio as yikes! Margarita that tastes like cool-aid, wet guac and a chimichanga that saw just enough fry time to warm it. Mr Zane took care of me and he was great but this is that place that spent way more time and money on the big ass fountain out front than they did developing their "authentic Mexican". Ive had way better more authentic Mexican from a truck. It was not expensive and the staff was great. They could he great with some better quality food but maybe thats the authentic part. read more

It's been almost 6 years since I've been back to good ole Stilly still Stillwater! This was my first stop and quite possibly my reason for going! I dragged my sweet mama with me and it was a great experience. I ordered a giant bowl of white queso and guacamole, I couldn't wait. However sadness, the white queso did not taste the same as I remember. It tasted like cheap cheese. I feel like they used to use goat cheese, but it tasted like imitation. So so so sad. This is one of my favorite Mexican restaurants in town. They have great flavorful food. I like that it's not all covered in cheese sauce like so many other places. Also their margarita and sangria mixed drink is delicious. The only downside is the wait time can be long. It's taken up to 45 minutes to get my food sometimes. read more

Place is looking much better after the remodel. I love that all the seats are comfortable and they have a huge outdoor seating area. However, they still have a lot to finish and they had all their old stuff sitting outside.They did have Good prices but the food was very little and bland. You do have to pay for queso but it was white queso and much better than normal queso. This is the kind that I would pay for. Goodness! There are some bad reviews! All I can say is the few times we've eaten here we've been seated promptly, waited on promptly and served promptly. The food has always been comparable to every other Mexican restaurant. We don't live in Stillwater so don't get here often. What we noticed today is they've done extensive renovations with a new pretty patio area. (We ate inside). What I immediately liked is the large carafe the salsa is served in. Didn't have to ask for more. Was also pleasantly surprised is that my chili relleno is a whole Poplano chili, not just a piece of one. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars are the flies. If I could give less stars then I would. My in-laws were here from out of town and we were working so they went there for beers and some food. It took them over an hour for COLD food. When my sister-in-law talked to them about it, they were treated very harshly. They re-did the outside and that looks good but sadly the customer service is HORRIBLE. I ended up going after my family went there because some co-workers wanted to eat there. Yup, it was bad. Food was bland, 2 of the 4 orders were wrong and mine was cold. Service was slow and very waiter wasn't concerned with taking care of us. He was a very nice young man , but service was not good. Brought us queso with no chips, had to flag down another waiter to get him to bring us chip 10-15 minutes after the dip arrived. The food is not good over all. They are asking customers to write good reviews in exchange for free queso and I think that's why there's good reviews on this place. It's terrible. The floor and table were sticky and the food was so disappointing. It was bland with extremely small portion sizes. The service was really slow and food was cold when it came to the table. It was a pathetic attempt. So, how do they stay in business? That became pretty obvious within the first ten minutes. They don't check id's in a college town and the drinks are stiff and cheap. A "jumbo" margarita is $7 and they also serve them in pitchers. Don't come here for dinner, come here to pregame before going to the club. If you're 19 - then it's probably at least a 4 star review. Basically, it's really sad when the cheap seafood joint (Sam's) in Stillwater OK is better in every way than this place. read more

I had never been to El Tapatio before tonight and I was so looking towards Mexican with all this virus stuff going on! Unfortunately the restaurant is not practicing social distancing rules well as there were people crammed in the lobby area and no one said a thing about it... the food was okay and the salsa was good to me but the service was something else. We had a waitress that rarely checked on us or really even payed any attention to the tables she was helping.. I got a broken dish, which I know is a health code violation, and the sanitizing procedures for tables was as minimal as just spritzing some cleaner on the table and wiping it a bit... other places care enough about their customers to completely sanitize everything that a customer could touch...
