The name of this restaurant should be changed from El Tucan to "El Too Bland". Picked up take out today and after three bites of my food, I pitched the rest in the trash. The rice was tasteless and so were the soupy beans. No seasoning whatsoever. BTW, my order was not right either. No way is this the best Mexican food in town. Today it was the worst. Taco Tuesdays are a big hit extremely tasty chicken tacos, packed with protein. There's a special on Tuesdays also Monday through Wednesday two for one margaritas. Everything taste great. This is my favorite Mexican food restaurant in 2024. It's nicely decorated and has a great ambiance. Your kids will love the fish tanks in the center of the room. Also, their chips and salsa are the best in town IMO. The food is delicious! Also, always great service. read more

I got take out from here and was really disappointed with the taste and quality. The reviews all say best Mexican cuisine in Owensboro, but the food had barely any flavor for me. I got chicken tacos with all the regular sides (rice, lettuce, salsa, cheese, pico). The meat was bland, the tortillas were dry and falling apart, and overall the meal wasn't good. I hate to give a bad review because the customer service was great! The hostess I ordered with was friendly and they got my food to me quickly. The inside of the restaurant was also clean and matches the vibe of the cuisine. They had a good sized crowd for weekday dinner service. But based on my last meal I'm weary to try this place out again. read more

This place was once called El Tucan and it seems this place has been around for a few years. Owensboro is my hometown, & while I moved away five years ago, I'm in town often. We were visiting some friends who suggested this place. They were fans so we have it a try. We dined on a Saturday night around 6:30pm. The restaurant is located off Frederica, in a strip mall that doesn't face Frederica, so it's hard to see from the main thoroughfare. The parking lot a pretty packed, but it wasn't too busy inside the restaurant. We were told to sit where ever, so we picked a booth. The place is pretty much two aisles with tables on both sides, a half wall dividing the aisles with different Tucan figurines. The chips were brought to our table with the menus. The salsa was great, it was kind of runny, but had chunks of tomatoes, onions and cilantro. Some places will give you salsa that is like a runny version of ketchup, this isn't one of those places. The chips are different from any Mexican place in Owensboro (well, Real Hacienda, that place on Parrish & that place in front of the old Walmart). The chips are thin, like cantina chips. They were warm & crisp. I loved the chips & salsa. The menu has a bunch of options & everything looks like it's priced pretty well. I was going to get the quesadilla with shrimp, but I asked the server if the shrimp had it's tails on in the quesadilla and he said it did. I don't like to work that much, so I picked the burrito California with grilled chicken for $7.99. I also ordered a regular, lime margarita, large for $7.99. We got our food about ten minutes later. The presentation wasn't much on the burrito. Just a large burrito on a plate. It was a nice size for the price of 8 bucks. The size of the margarita was good for 8 bucks also. Was it the best margarita ever? No. It was your average mix, sweet and sour. I liked the burrito, but the chicken in the burrito was overcooked it my opinion, it was overly chewy. Everyone else at the table seemed to enjoy their food. We were done and waited about 15-20 minutes for the check. We finally just got up from the table and went to the front counter. The hostess there was friendly and rang us up. Our server was very absent during dinner. This is the best Mexican place in Owensboro? No, but it's not the worst (that would be El Terrible). read more

My favorite place to eat Mexican cuisine. The portions are huge. You will never leave hungry and if you do it is your fault. I have over time tried almost everything on the menu. Every dish is excellent. There wasn't one that I did not like. If dining in the staff is super friendly and remember you. Very fast workers and the drinks are stiff too. Lol which is a plus. If calling in to take out... your order takes no more than ten minutes tops and your ready to go. I am always impressed with this place they have always gotten my order correct and my personal fav they have the thin cantina chips they make not the crappy thick ones other restaurants make. OUTSTANDING food and service! I've eaten there three times after meeting the owner at the Owensboro Regional Farmer's Market and asking what sets them apart from other restaurants. FLAVOR. That's what sets them apart. Great menu options and we have loved every bite of everything we've tried. Definitely will return. One of our favorite places in Owensboro to eat. First time eating here. Food was good, but very noisy with loud mouth drunken patrons. Under staffed. Messed up my order first time had to redo. Didn't get an extra order of beans. Waiter never checked on us once after initial order. Won't be back! read more

The food is fantastic (especially that cheese dip) along with the service but what really stands out is HOW CLEAN IT IS!!! When you go to restaurants, the tables are usually sticky along with the seats but this restaurant is the exception!! Everything is so clean!!! Seated quickly, ordered. Food delivered fast. Very tasty and not super heavy. Had to leave for a rehearsal and just went to the cashiers to pay as our server was not to be found. I'm a visitor from Chicago where we have unlimited Mexican restaurants so it may not be far to compare but my meal was just subpar. I ordered the shredded chicken enchilada which was decent and a burrito to go and the burrito was not tasty. It was very runny and hard to pick up. However their frozen margaritas are good. OMG. This is my first visit to this hidden gem. The service was a bit slow but they were very busy. Lots of screaming, unruly children running around for which only the non-parents can be blamed. I had the chicken enchiladas and they were fabulous! The tortillas were fresh and the chicken was quite tasty and very flavorful. They were covered with a delicious cheese sauce - not your regular cheese sauce. This was cream-like and scrumptious. I definitely recommend and will revisit. read more
