We enjoy Papa Grande for a quick lunch. The service is speedy, and if you have limited time you can get in and out. The ingredients seem fresh, no wilted lettuce or stale chips. Plus, the prices on the luncheon menu are great!! For under 10 dollars you get nice portions. Of note is the freshly prepared guacamole. Long time before she returned, then could not understand why our order was wrong. Brought over server , he acted as thought he understood but when they served corrected order ... it was same as first. Rest of party was finished eating by then. First time here. They have a pretty large menu. It is separated pretty well. Service was quick and efficient. I'm pretty sure some workers there have a hard time with English. That's ok with me. Everyone understood us. We even got to use some Spanish that we knew. I got cheese enchiladas rancheras. My wife got molè poblano. Their chops and salsa were really good. I don't know what the white sauce is but we both thought it was good enough to eat more than a couple of times. Tangy and - might - have a tiny bit of cinnamon? My cheese enchiladas had so much shredded pork on it that I couldn't see the enchiladas! I don't know if because I had a little congestion but the pork looked amazing, but not a lot of flavor. I tasted my wife's molè, I usually don't order that anywhere. She liked it. Did I mention that you are served A LOT of food. I think our leftovers might be two more meals each ! The restaurant is beautiful inside. I'm glad we tried it. My plate had a lot of oil on it when I transferred the food. The cheese inside the enchiladas tasted to me like white velveeta ( if there is such a thing) or maybe white sliced American cheese. I was hoping for more like a Oaxaca, mozzarella or even Monterey Jack cheese. I dumped the remaining delicious red salsa on my pork to have later. I'll probably go there again. So, a little background on my experience with Mexican in Owensboro. I grew up on eating Real Hacienda. We would occasionally eat at El Toribio, also known by some as El Terrible. Recently I've tried Mi Ranchito on Parrish and it was pretty good. I'll organize them all in best to worst at the end of this review. I moved away from Owensboro about 5 years ago. I come back from time to time to visit with people. I recently heard about this place and a few people were saying "this is the best Mexican in town!". Hmmm. Lets give this place a try. This building used to be the home to a shoe store. I would say this place opened a few months ago. The decor inside is your average Mexican restaurant. The menus have the Papa Grande name on them and are leather bound. They look fairly old, so I wonder if there was another restaurant around with the name that moved into Owensboro. Our server sat us at a booth on a Saturday afternoon. He brought over chips and salsa, along with some kind of white dipping sauce. It wasn't cheese sauce, but some kind of spicy ranch. I tried it on a few chips and I'm not sure if I care for it or not. The chips weren't served hot which annoys me. The salsa was more tomato paste kind than chunky salsa that I prefer. I wasn't too impressed with the chips and salsa. They've got a lunch menu special that is from 11am-3pm Monday through Saturday. The menu is quite vast as it goes with most Mexican restaurants. I picked the chicken quesadilla special on the lunch menu that came with rice for five bucks and added on an order of fried beans for $1.75 more. It took less than ten minutes to receive our food. The portion of the rice & quesadilla was a steal for five bucks. I liked how they poured the cheese sauce on the quesadilla and the rice. The chicken inside the quesadilla was okay, I would like it seasoned a little more. It tastes more like boiled chicken to me. I thought the fried beans were okay, your basic refried bean at a Mexican restaurant. Overall I thought the prices were good, at least for the lunch menu. The food was okay, it wasn't bad but it wasn't the best in town in my opinion. I didn't like the chips and salsa, which is a big thing for me when I go to a Mexican restaurant. I would have to say that this is much better than El Toribio, a step below Real Hacienda, & maybe a tie with Mi Ranchito, although I've only at at papa & Mi Ranchito once each. Amazing food and service with great ambience . On being seated, we were served chips and salsa. Chips were hot and fresh and salsa was delicious bursting with flavors. We ordered guacamole which was made in front of us by the server which is the highlight of restaurant as well. In the main course we ordered vegetable fajitas which came with rice, beans, pico de Gallo , lettuce, cheese and sour cream. Fajitas were extremely hot being served in sizzler plate and has all vegetables, tasted delicious . Also ordered vegetable quesadilla, which was nicely made with filling of veggies and cheese. I will go as far as saying this was the best Mexican food I have had in Owensboro, keeping in mind that Owensboro, Kentucky is not a hot bed of top notch Mexican cuisine. All Mexican restaurants in town, and I have tried almost all of them, have what appears to be the exact same restaurant supply company providing the meats, tortillas, rice, beans, etc. They seem to taste about the same. Where this place stood out was with a few, more creative menu options than the competition and a superior broil cook. I could definitely taste the flavor of the chicken right off the grill cooked by someone taking pride in their work. My entree was a chicken and mushroom dish with cheese, rice, and beans. Only two orders were even close to what we ordered none were good. Mine was half raw and half burnt with missing ingredients.our server took our order and never came back. I love this place! It is close in taste and style to Garcia's, our favorite Mexican place to eat. Service is good. Food is hot and good. Love the shrimp tierra firme. It's a bed of rice with shrimp covered in cheese sauce. Their shrimp is good size mouthfuls. Dear Son got the Deluxe Beef Burrito and said it was awesome. Chips are hot. Without a doubt the WORST Mexican food in the Tri-State! I'm from Texas, I know what good Mexican food is. Taco salad and enchiladas were our orders, simple dishes, hard to screw those up in a Mexican restaurant...but they did it, totally, all the food was greasy and tasteless. Salsa was like salty crushed tomatoes, tables were dirty, and our waiter spoke NO English except, 'more iced tea?'. Total waste of time and $$. Stay away, FAR AWAY, from this place. read more

This is my favorite restaurant in town. You are always seated quickly, given chips with two kinds of sauce. The menu is large, so large you can try a new dish every time you go and that new dish will probably become your favorite. Currently my favorite is "Tierra Garcia's" and they serve delicious food every time. Most of the prices run from 7-12 dollars and you get huge portions. We always have to get take home boxes. If you go when it's busy there will be a longer wait until you get your food and it can also be very loud. So we prefer to go just after lunch around 2:30 for a quiet atmosphere and faster service. The drinks are 2$ each but come in large glasses. The steaks are always good not too expensive and are never just fat. I love this place. read more

We - 2 families with small children - go here almost every Sunday after church, and frequently other times throughout the week. There are 8 of us total. Our orders are correct, the food is amazing, service is fast, and it's a great atmosphere! They by far have the best chicken in town as far as Mexican restaurants go! It's moist, huge chunks (of shredded) and has good flavor. The fresh guacamole is a great touch! The kids love watching them make it right beside our table, and it tastes PERFECT!! read more

The food is good... but they always seem to get someone's order wrong. We also go out with our kids.. be careful... they say the drink is included in the kids meals and then they charge you for the drink too. It happens every single time. I'm sad I have to give one star. I placed a to go order. With 3 meals. One kids meal and two adult meals. My kids meal was wrong, missing one enchilada. I go back in to let the guy know. He comes out to my car goes through my food and says you can come in and pay for an enchilada. Seriously my kids meal on your menu (#2) taco, enchilada, Mexican rice. Then I get home and add my total together. $3.75 for kids meal. $6.99 for enchilada supreme. $9.00 for burrito fajita. My total was $23.42. I added that up plus tax. I was over charged by $3.
